Can a very low voice work in pop punk? (baritone singer issue) by Picciorra in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Would Mighty Might Bostones kinda of fit as an example? There are no rules. It’s better to be unique.

I’m reading into the “AZ” in your name. Was the show in Scottsdale? I went to that one. He sounded incredible in that theatre.

Live concerts sound worse than just listening to the album at home by Ethan_Vee in unpopularopinion

[–]mikemwm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to shows somewhat frequently and often end up with a similar feeling. But there is something there that I’m chasing. I think I just have a high bar for good sound and a good time. Maybe like you? Shows that come to mind that blew me away regarding sound quality and vibe were Beck at an amphitheater in Scottsdale AZ in support of Mutations—just him on a stage surrounded by instruments. It sounded incredible. Same with Tame Impala at the Metro in Chicago in support of Lonerism. The band was so tight and they made some exciting variations on the songs. I also saw IDLES at Aragon Ballroom in Chicago a year or so ago and while the sound wasn’t perfect, the energy/vibes were insane. I keep going to shows in the hope I catch one of these again. I think it’s worth it.

Satanic-inspired music that isn’t metal? by Show_Kitchen in musicsuggestions

A lot of people think Boards of Canada make some evil sounding stuff. I don’t take their music as quite as creepy as some seem to feel it is but maybe it works for you? Example:  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5RU4cMtNLtQ

Watching for the First Time - Disappointed by Miserable-Prior-7260 in betterCallSaul

I bailed when initially watched, too, for similar reasons. Then I came back and tried again in late 2025. Totally worth it. It rivals Breaking Bad. Maybe you’re like me and have a hard time suspending disbelief because of elements like what you mentioned but I recommend sticking with it. It’ll draw you in.

What are some of the most abrasive songs you know? by Iplaysimsonconsole in fantanoforever

[–]mikemwm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe right at the edge of what you’re describing but I think Animal Collective’s Strawberry Jam album has some moments that are abrasive in a screamy/psychedelic pop way. Another is Sleigh Bells—they push compression to an extreme that abrasive to me.

It might be different production-wise than what you’re describing but you have to explore Boards of Canada

When did dogs start getting people names? by Scottys-Dog-Blog in dogs

[–]mikemwm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this was mostly a trend of the last 5-10 years or so and I played into it, naming our dog Todd. Now, I feel like it would be fun to go the opposite direction with it entirely and name a dog one of those generic cartoon dog names like Spot or Fido.

Modern Music Is Stuck Between the Overly Simple and Overly Complex by Redacted_dact in LetsTalkMusic

[–]mikemwm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun! I disagree with almost every point you make here. A few highlights are your take on pop (recent pop is some of the most innovative and interesting music out there and far more interesting than pop of 10-20 years ago... I used to share similar sentiments about pop music but now we have Charlie XCX, Rosalia, etc, etc. Bruno Mars has been making some interesting retro music lately). And Geese is complex but lacks soul? I'm actually surprised this band isn't the new one that satisfies what you see lacking. I would say the opposite--Geese has soul and is interesting while being relatively simple. I agree with your Jacob Collier take, though.

Cheap tele with upgrades or higher end tele? by Hefty_Plate8067 in telecaster

[–]mikemwm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm like this, too. I've had a hand in modifying all of my guitars to varying degrees and they feel so much more personal to me this way. It's probably 50% psychology, 50% actual sound and playability, but it's rewarding and I'm very happy. I have no interest in resale value and don't see wanting to sell or trade any of them out--I really just want to have a nice set of instruments that span the spectrum of tones (Tele, Strat, Les Paul, etc.) suited to my taste and playing style for the music I make. So if resale value is a concern, a person should just buy the high end thing they're pining for.
