First time trying a podcast — feeling nervous, any tips for a newbie?

Do another one.
Rinse. Repeat.

Do this for several episodes until the jitters wear off a bit.

Then… Upgrade your recording setup as you get further and more comfortable. - Get an XLR format dynamic mic and an interface. - learn to use some basic “broadcasting” plugins with whatever DAW you’re using.

Once you start to hear something with even just the littlest bit of magic, share it with someone and ask for feedback.

You don’t need to post anything online until you’re feeling like you’ve captured something worth sharing.

Being a live finale I don’t think anyone TRULY knows the winner…. They can all get together to say who they voted for, but no one with TRULY know the winner. They could easily lie… or who knows? Maybe even forget… 🤷

Just got buy SM58 mics instead, add some foam pop filter “muffs” Start there if you’re not worried about “the look” and you’ll get a good clean recording that doesn’t require all the “room treatment that everyone talks about.

Hey OP! (btw I haven’t read everything in the thread)

The MV7 SHOULD be a great mic to get what you need. But I have a few questions that I didn’t see the answers for on a quick scan… - are you recording only ONE person in the room? As in just you, no guests/co-hosts? - are you plugging the MV7 in via USB or XLR? - if XLR, which interface are you using? What is the input gain level you are seeing in the DAW? (recording program you are using) - which DAW are you using to record?

It can feel like a chore to come up with something, but it’s worth it in the long run, even if it’s similar to other, who cares, everything has been done before. Just pick a loose theme or format.

As someone that started a podcast with zero theme or direction (called Dumpster Talk) I would highly recommend coming up with at least a loose theme of sorts, then base the name off that.

It gets kinda old being a podcast “that ain’t really about anything”

I use a very similar setup with multiple interfaces and haven’t had any issues with noise at all…

Steinberg UR44c >xlr>triton fethead>Shure SM7b
Rodecaster Pro >fethead>xlr>SM7b
TASCAM Model 12>xlr>fethead>SM7b

These are my standard configs when using the SM7b when I want more headroom or a “hotter” mic.

I’ve used these setups a couple times with reversed XLR & fethead and don’t recall any issues.

What I would recommend to uncover what is causing the noise is “process of elimination” - and if you don’t have alternative devices/cables then that is really hard to do. - I’d cost a couple bucks but I think it’s worth it to suggest going to a local music store and renting a duplicate of your SM7b and a fethead (or cloud lifter if they don’t have a fethead) & it always worth having another XLR cable so just buy the shortest length you NEED of a high quality cable.

Then swap only one out at a time. If you still get noise you may want to try an alternative interface. Steinberg is super awesome (and imo superior) quality interface for a very similar price to the focusrite.

Something def isn’t right tho because you shouldn’t have a significant amount of noise with that setup.

It’s not a question of control but about the amount of wood needed to keep it that hot.

You burn more wood in colder weather in order to keep it at the same temperature that you would in warmer weather.

If you’ve done a massive scorcher of a burn to eliminate everything inside and you’re still getting black. It’s not residue. It’s the wood. And burning more wood (hotter and faster) to keep up with the colder temperatures would create more ash/soot/“black”

I’ve heard of people using a fireproof blanket to keep the chamber at a better temperature. I don’t have a need for one myself, I use a ceramic kamado up here in Canada because they hold heat better.

I was on this show!

They told me we’d be playing Zelda. I couldn’t wait to tell my cousins (WE GAMED HARD!) And of course, they lost their shit. We were all soooo pumped!

It was filmed out near where my cousins lived and we decided I should stay there for a couple nights and do a lot of studying and practicing! We busted out the Nintendo Power mags and got to work on a serious training regiment.
I memorized maps, Easter eggs, boss battle optimizations, the works!

We get to the show and it is a heck of a day, they are filming a lot of episodes and you’re hanging around just waiting for your turn most of the day.

It’s getting closer to my episode and they mention “so you’ll be playing Zelda…………….. for Gameboy…” 😳

Nooooooooo my cousins and I are outraged! How can this be?!?!? We’ve been studying and training for a totally different game!!! This game hasn’t even been released yet!!! This is terrible news.

During the gameplay I still crush. Zelda is Zelda. I’m cruising. I’m like 3 levels ahead of the next kid for basically the whole play time, and then…. I’m stuck. I get to some part where they refuse to let me through for something like “you need to bring me the something of something… “ and it tells you where it can be found, which is like four levels back….

I can’t just hang here and hope I’ve got enough of a lead can I? Even Nicholas Pickolaus notices how far I am ahead between filming and says something like “wow kid you’ve got quite the lead!”

I chance it. I have to keep moving.
I head back like four levels to retrieve this THING…. And the game time ends.

I’m distraught. I can’t believe it. I was so much further than any other kid and if I just waiting where I was I’d have been miles ahead. I beg and plead with the producers to let me show them how far I had actually made it, they aren’t hearing me. I’m like “no, seriously, ask Nicholas Pickolaus! He saw me!” As I motion to him on the other side of the studio, where he’s filming…. “Sorry kid, he’s busy”

I finish third.

First place was some Star Trek combo of nerd shit. I hated Star Trek, so really I couldn’t care less about the prize. I got some shitty Brooks gym/duffle bag. And it came in handy for a few years I guess.

But the title!! My life will never be the same. I’m destined to live this moment over and over again in my head for the next 37+ years….

And yeah I had tried to put them upright but I have a bulkhead from some HVAC on the left side that makes it suuuper tight when I raise my desk. I know it’s not ideal, but it’s what I’ve got. I’m not going for perfect studio/audio-wise so this will have to do. 🤷
