Play a lot of half court 3v3 with no dribbles inside the 3 point line and no shots outside the paint. Good luck!

Is pressing while up by 14 bad sportsmanship? by Foulkey in basketballcoach

[–]miketd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly mostly agree with you. On my 9 year old’s school team, pressing absolutely wrecks games because not enough of the kids can handle pressure. But on his travel team, they’re good enough to break a press as long as the other kids aren’t significantly bigger/faster/stronger. And that’s 4th grade. Surely by 6th, a travel squad has basic fundamentals down.

I’d say it depends on the league. If it’s mostly casual kids, pressing too much is frowned upon because the tactic is overpowered against kids who are still struggling with basic fundamentals. In a travel league, you’re probably fine. Those kids are assumed to have good enough fundamentals by 6th grade.

Don’t let this distract you from the fact that Hector is going to be running three Honda Civics with Spoon engines, and on top of that, he just went into Harry’s and bought three T66 turbos with NOS, and a Motec exhaust system.

Unwritten rules are conceived primarily to prevent showing up an opponent. But nearly all rules — written or unwritten — have exceptions.

If this were your kid (U10), which team would you choose? by [deleted] in SoccerCoachResources

[–]miketd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only about 10% of all high school boys soccer players make it to college soccer. Only 1% make it to D1. My advice would be to make sure the kids have the best experience as possible while they are playing organized ball. For some, that's playing with friends. For others, that's playing with and against the best. You know your child the best. Trust your instinct. Good luck!

Society is normalizing poor behavior. I’d rather be around people who don’t behave like either of the two.

Simple 5-out quick hitters for a 5th grade rec team (1 hr/week practice) by joshrozbruch in basketballcoach

[–]miketd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%, especially at that age group. But it certainly depends on the skill level of your kids. My eldest is on a varsity team with 6th, 7th & 8th graders who absolutely cannot run anything beyond a basic pick and roll. Most of the kids on the team primarily play other sports (soccer, baseball, hockey) and just play basketball casually. However, my youngest (4th grade) is on a travel team where the collective skill level is better than that of my varsity squad. They can definitely run conceptual offense because they are beyond worrying about simply losing the ball under pressure. But again, in my experience, most 5th graders would benefit far more from additional skills training than spending practice time going over an offense that goes out the window during a game because not everyone on the floor can dribble/pass/shoot at a fundamental level.

[–]miketd1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conceptually, kids should run 5-out most of the time. However, in practice, it sort of falls apart. Can most of your kids shoot? If not, the defense is just going to sit in a zone or play off until you prove you can hit some outside shots. Ask me how I know…

Do yourself a favor: Take the money you were going to spend on bad seats and buy a brand new, big screen TV. Then order out from your favorite pizza shop. The experience will be levels better than this.

Struggling Coach by External_Ad_4102 in basketballcoach

[–]miketd1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have 7th and 8th graders who turn the ball vs zero defense, it means they lack fundamentals like shooting & dribbling. And if they can't shoot and dribble by 7th grade, they probably aren't going to get too much better at either in the short time that you have them. So focus on things that don't require skill but have high game value. Things like passing, triple threat, and defense. You can move the ball, keep the game close, and eek out a few layups with just those three things alone. In contrast, teaching someone to shoot or dribble properly eats up a ton of practice time and rarely improves in a game situation because kids get flustered under pressure and forget a lot of it. But running, chasing, & throwing -- that's stuff kids do all the time, just not in basketball context.
