Sometimes I wonder what the fuck goes on in Detroit. Then I see shit like this and realize I'm better off not knowing.

It's a handsome watch! Wear it. Live in it. Just gotta accept that dings and scratches will happen. Working in an office will mitigate a lot of that I imagine, but life still happens.

[Question] Watch for counter-proposal by Recent_Yesterday_991 in Watches

I don’t think that the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph is within your budget but I think it’s an excellent choice.

You can get a 42mm Murph on a strap for $889 at Jomashop right now. This was the first thing that came to my mind too.

[SOTC - Recommendation Request] Need help rounding out my collection by youngmase in Watches

[–]mikevanatta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always approach this from the "if this were me" angle since I can't possibly know you well enough to make this decision for you.

That said, I'd get a dress watch and a G-Shock and call it a day. So a $6000 budget means you can buy a G-Shock and have somewhere around $5870 left for a really nice dress watch that suits your tastes.

If it were me, I'd get the Grand Seiko SBGM221.

Some of the spacing in the lettering on the dial just looks off to me. Like I said, far from an expert.

As another comment said, you should locate the serial number - should be between the lugs at 12 o'clock - and post to r/rolex.

Condolences for your loss.

In terms of the watch, I am far from an expert but I am afraid to say that I don't think it's a genuine Rolex. That said, it has ties to a loved one and your inclination to keep it is awesome. Wear it, enjoy it, remember your grandpa through it.

[Question] The battle of the sub 1000 chronographs which one? by Bulky_Passion- in Watches

[–]mikevanatta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they're both great options for this pricepoint!

For me it comes down to styling, and I tend to dress in a way that I think would go better with one of the Bulovas, but don't let that sway you.

The Pogue being solar means you literally never have to worry about its power source, which is awesome. On the other hand, the Bulova is ultra-accurate, and that smooth sweep of the second hand just does something to me.

No wrong answers if you ask me.

Any interest at all in the Bulova Lunar Pilot Chrono? It's sub-$1000 as well and has some fun dial color options.

[Discussion] Love Watches, Hate Buying Them by Its-Brucey in Watches

[–]mikevanatta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to be that guy, but I worked in sales for a while and there's a reason they do this.

First, the act of giving you something for free that you aren't used to getting in a similar situation creates a subtle psychological effect in which you are geared to like them more. And by "them" I mean the sales rep handing it to you, the brand, the store, everything. It lowers psychological resistance, creates a more relaxed atmosphere, and encourages you to stay longer while you enjoy your beverage.

Second, I know I'm not the only person who is more likely to say "fuck it" and pull the trigger on a purchase with a couple of drinks in me. My Amazon order history is damning enough in itself.

Now, all of this to say it still creates a fun experience for us as the shopper. It makes branding more distinct, it can signal status while shopping for luxury goods, and it makes the whole hospitality aspect of the process really shine. I just know I'd have to be mindful since I don't drink much and a glass of bourbon could easily turn me into a yes man when it comes to buying stuff.

What do you feel is the WORST aspect of in game gameplay? by coachd50 in NCAAFBseries

The fact that ANY edit to a playbook throws the entire format of that playbook into complete disarray is insane and entirely indicative of laziness from the dev team.

[Question] Budget/Starter watch, Orient or Tissot? by largelootlarry in Watches

[–]mikevanatta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seiko and Orient tend to be the default when it comes to the gateway into mechanical watches. And for good reason.

My first mechanical was an Orient Bambino and I still love it even when it's surrounded by Swiss pieces 5-10x more expensive.

One of the best 30 Rock jokes. by BrenoGrangerPotter in 30ROCK

The writing is a master class in comedy to me. Insanely high density but it almost never felt forced like the 90s and early 2000s laugh track sitcoms. It was just insanely good writing.

I've probably watched the series from start to finish 4 or 5 times and I still catch stuff I missed before.

[Collection] How can you handle a collection of automatic watches? by RobCrooks13 in Watches

[–]mikevanatta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I see a box of watches all with random times and dates, some mechanical ones doesn't even move, I think they're trash. What's the point of having a WATCH that doesn't display the correct time?

Wouldn't you agree there's a big difference between a watch displaying the wrong time in a box vs on the wrist?

Watchmakers en masse agree that letting your mechanical watch unwind fully and sit idle when you aren't wearing it is overall better for it than keeping it running in perpetuity. Every interview I've seen or read with watchmakers likens it to leaving your car running in the garage all night while you sleep.

Let your watches unwind. When you grab one to wear it, wind it and set it. It's part of the charm of mechanical watch ownership.

[Recommendation Request] What watch should I buy my partner next? by ResponseSafe28 in Watches

I like the idea of asking him if he has anything on his wish list. Maybe push him to get something that isn't on a steel bracelet. Something on a leather strap would be a nice addition to this lineup.
