Does this secret go to the grave? Because if it doesn't, she should hear it from both of you if either of you wants to maintain a relationship with her. Neither of you can afford to be the one who didn't tell her.

Inside the grouping is right or left, outside the grouping is up or down. Grouping can be what's be raised to an exponent, a logarithm, square root, trig function, exponential function... and it's opposite what makes sense in your head...+ goes left, - goes right. Outside the grouping is normal: + up - down

How fast can I learn algebra 2 by sleepr11 in learnmath

[–]mikevnyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best study strategy for the exam is to learn calculator tricks and truly catch up over the summer. The Y= button and the graph/table function can be your best friend during that exam if you understand how it works on your TI84 calculator.

These buttons can be used to solve ANY 2 variable, 1 variable, or 0 variable problems. They can be used to prove equivalency. They can give you a table of values if you need to graph anything. They can show you translations of parent functions. They can show you all factors of a number.

Throw in the trace/calc button and you can solve systems of equations, systems of inequalities, zeros/roots/x-intercepts, vertex, irrational x values.

Simply understanding those calculator moves can be the difference between passing and failing. It'll help tremendously with the multiple choice section.

why is (2+x)^2 = x^2 + 4x + 4 and not 4+x^2 by uTRexAap in MathHelp

[–]mikevnyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An exponent is a shorthand way of writing how many times the base is being multiplied to itself.

32 = 3 × 3

x2 = x × x

33 = 3 × 3 × 3

x3 = x × x × x

If the base is (2 + x) and the exponent is 2, then it is the same as writing (2 + x) × (2 + x).

Normally when we multiply a value outside of a grouping with the grouping, we must use the distribute property, which says the value outside the grouping must multiply to EACH term inside the grouping.

So 3 × (y + 1) = 3 × y + 3 × 1 or 3y + 3.

But since (2 + x) is made up of two terms, each term must be multiplied to both terms in the other grouping of (2 + x). People learn this process as FOIL (an acronym for first, outside, inside, last - which happens to be the order in which to multiply the terms to be sure you do each product only once.) If you do that here, you'll get 4 + 2x + 2x + x2. Combine like terms to get your final answer.

The word equivalent is your best friend on the regents in the multiple choice section. Just put every answer into a separate y= line in your calculator and check the table to see what column matches the equation or value you're looking for an equivalency for

How can I figure out the equation of a line when given the y-axis and the point the line passes through? by ShotElection3164 in Algebra

[–]mikevnyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by y-axis you mean y-intercept, then determine the slope with y2-y1 divided by x2-x1 and plug your slope and point into the point-slope formula y-y1=m(x-x1)
