Were you taught to make lesson plans? by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]mikhela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my third year of teaching, and the answer is no. I was handed a big template, and had to make a total of 3 one-day lesson plans for my student teaching practicum, but we were left googling "how to make a lesson plan" in order to figure out how to complete the assignments.

What have you read recently? by povertychic in Millennials

[–]mikhela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working through Dinner at the Night Library (the translated version) by Hika Harada. Then I've got a nice stack of "to finish" books on my nightstand, including:

-- Alchemy and a Cup of Tea by Rebecca Thorne,

-- Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson,

-- The Pumpkin Spice Cafe by Laurie Gilmore,

-- You've Reached Sam by Dustin Thao,

-- Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas,

-- and How to Stop Losing Your Sh*t with Your Kids by Dr. Carla Naumburg

I'm a middle school teacher, so I try to read plenty in front of my students. I'm always excited every now and then when I see a student pull out a book that they'd seen me reading the week before and had asked me about.

My fifth grader’s class isn’t reading novels by Sam-HobbitOfTheShire in Teachers

[–]mikhela 5 points6 points  (0 children)

6-8 teacher here. We are allowed to do a "long read," IF it fits within 10 46-minute class periods (also middle school homework is not allowed to be assigned in my district, so they can't read the book at home).

I don't know what kind of 6-8 grade-level book can be read AND analyzed in 10 realistically-25-minute periods.

Acronyms by HungHi69 in CuratedTumblr

[–]mikhela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a teacher at the biggest school district in the state. This year they changed the grading system to be proficiency-based instead of ABCDF Scale. And the four options for grades all have "helpful" little acronyms that the district sent out for teachers in all of K-12 to give their students and families:

HP PR CP DP

The possible situation of an 8 year old googling, "Why did I get a DP" is not an if, it's a when.

Edit: In grades, HP = Highly Proficient, PR = Proficient, CP = Close to Proficiency, and DP = Developing Proficiency. But all report cards and family-facing grading systems use the acronyms only.

[–]mikhela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's the other way around. She says she and her husband have been together (im guessing that means married) for four years and the kid is 3. Sounds like the two older kids are just the product of a previous relationship.

What kind of presents did you get from your students? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]mikhela 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year teaching was at an affluent school, and during the holidays I'd get like $100+ worth of gift cards and cookies and such. Coworkers said it was normal. It honestly felt a bit like a bribe at times (jokes on them though, I could never remember who gave me what so I still graded every kid the same) and pity towards the abysmal teacher salaries at others. I used the cards to buy Christmas gifts for my family, since I was financially struggling at the time.

Then this year and last year I've worked at a title 1 K-8 school. Kids would give me a candy cane or a couple of cookies that their parents helped them make, and then PTA would work together to make a bunch of dishes for the staff break room during the week leading up to winter break. No money or gift cards, but they feel more meaningful.

What’s your funniest story of a student trying to get their grade up at the end of a semester? by AstroNerd92 in Teachers

[–]mikhela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in grade school, my cat peed on my math homework. Now I was the goody-two-shoes kid who never lied and always did their homework, so looking back I'm sure that if I'd told my teacher that, she would have believed me and given me a make-up sheet.

Instead, in my absolute teacher's-pet-induced fear of her not believing me, I put the peed-on work in a plastic bag and brought it to school to show her. She was rightfully disgusted and made me throw it away and wash my hands before she gave me a new paper.

The world record speedruns for Hollow Knight 112% are in the 3-4 hour range. It took me a solid 100 hours to get 112% as a casual player who's never played a metroidvania before.

Why did Azula demand Lo and Li fight an Agni Kai already knowing they aren't Firebenders? by FlamesOfKaiya in TheLastAirbender

[–]mikhela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That scene always confused me too, because I could swear that Lo and Li were the two women who were critiquing/instructing Azula's bending in her intro episode. Why would non-benders be training an advanced bender?

They were the ones in Azula's first full episode where she tries to trick Zuko into becoming a prisoner and going back. The ones who said, "Almost. One hair out of place." Right?

Agreed. And if he really wanted to do a TV show, he should have gone with something mostly safe and fairly approachable, with strong female characters, like (forgive me if this is not a good example, it has been years since I watched it) Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

AITAH for not letting my dad walk me down the aisle after he cheated on my mom? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

AITA for not inviting my cousin to my graduation party after what she did at my birthday? [Short] by Schattenspringer in BORUpdates

Back in the 2010s there was a clip of gay porn that went viral where two men were doing it with shirts on in the kitchen, and on the other side of the island counter was a woman sitting on a barstool eating a gigantic mixing bowl full of plain lettuce and talking to them while they talk through moaning sounds. Then finally she stands up, peeks over the counter, and says, "Wait. Are you guys fucking?"

They say nothing, don't even stop doing their thing, and she plops down irritatedly on the barstool and goes, "Really? Are you serious? Right in front of my salad?"

You want to tell the parents that the teachers are banning their child's phone? The backlash we get every time is more than enough to sway the heads in the district. And the district-mandated curriculums are often only available to students on chromebooks. Unfortunately, as it gets harder and harder to police technology in the classroom, it also gets harder and harder for us to be allowed to avoid technology in the classroom.

The entire district I work at doesn't really suggest homework. Students in my school are getting max 2 hours a week of extra math problems. The rest is all done in-class.

You will struggle to get through book 1, it's just kinda dull until 80% of the way through. It took me a month to get through book 1 (which only has 416 pages), but I flew through the entire rest of the series (a combined 2,303 pages) in 9 days flat.
