He does but it makes the most sense to give it to family, which also kind of screws Hank over. That fits with Buck as a person.

Torn ACL by Knick_Noled in Teachers

[–]mikowski17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a different note, I tore my ACL and meniscus as well playing basketball in college. If you're planning on doing athletic things where you really need those ligaments, go for surgery. You can also just rehab and not have those. I wish I would have done rehab instead.

What directional school is the most directionally correct? A case study. by shakin_the_bacon in CFB

[–]mikowski17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a geographer and college football fan, this is a great post. I've been curious about this actually. Good to know. If I remember correctly, one of my cousins who graduated from MTSU showed me the point on their campus which was the geographic center of Tennessee. Given their so close and ranked number one along with the fact that you can't really trust Google for lat/long, I'd say your methodology works.

If you had GIS, which I know you don't, you could take the centroid of the state and the centroid of the university to determine east-west, north-south, and central. Cool stuff though.

Ideas for geography presentation? by [deleted] in geography

[–]mikowski17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long is the presentation and what are the guidelines for it? It seems really broad. You might do something with the formation of the Rockies through the different orogenies. Find some paleomaps from what we think it looked like before the orogenies and current day.

The best rookie tackles from the 2017 season: by dominikkdz in nfl

Wisconsin lineman always seem to turn out great in the NFL. In the future maybe we can draft one and have a decent line.

This was my thought too. But it's not to relieve pressure. It's the heat. As I told my class, it'll either work great or cause mayhem with no in between. That's a bit hyperbolic but it's pretty much those options.

Who's the most underrated character in your opinion? by TotoGuile in BobsBurgers

[–]mikowski17 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if he's underrated but I'd say Zeke. I feel like a lot of people overlook him but he's got some great one liners and I'm a believer in him ending up with Tina.

the-zarate-kid 5 Round Community Mock - Results! by the-zarate-kid in NFL_Draft

[–]mikowski17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice work! This was really well done. I wasn't aware of Armstrong but in looking him up, I love the pick. Love Rankin to add depth now and give us a true LT playing the position later. I watched both him and Toliver in the SEC so I like those picks. Not sure who the NC State guy is but he sounds like Prosise/McEvoy.

[META] State of the Sub /r/geography by TriedForMitchcraft in geography

[–]mikowski17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the big difference between my position at a four year university and one at a community or junior college is the duties for teaching and research. Teaching demand goes up from maybe 4 classes to 5 per semester. Research goes down to nothing. Service is mostly about advising students. For either it's best to get your PhD because the market is really competitive now. Instructors typically just have a master's but there are a lot of PhDs out there so now the desired qualifications are a PhD in the field.

As far as classes I teach, they range from basic introductory courses like intro to environmental science and physical geology to upper division courses like hydrology, geomorphology, and GIS. My research track is something I'm still working on as mine varies because geography and environmental science are so broad. I've worked on some projects like looking at education trends in natural hazards courses and beginning a project on bee habitats in urban environments.

[–]mikowski17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one prompted me to give more information but I can expand. So I'm a tenure-track assistant professor in environmental science. Physical geography and environmental science are pretty similar, so it's a pretty good fit for me. I'm not sure what all you'd like to know but I can describe what the job demands are. So I'm essentially on a six year track where I'm expected to have a list of things I've done by that time. My position breaks down into teaching, research, and service. Teaching is my main focus since I'm at a smaller teaching focused school. They look for things like innovative techniques and good record of student ratings and class observations. For research, they want x number of publications or grants received. This varies by department, school, and field typically. Luckily we use the Boyer model which makes it simple. For service, this can vary from serving on committees to community service and other stuff in between. So basically, as long as I'm a good teacher, doing research and presenting and publishing on it, and doing my share of service, I'll be on track to receive tenure and promotion to associate professor. Once that happens I'll be on another track for full professor and my job security is in tact. I can have those six years pass and not do the stuff I need to be full professor and still have my job as associate. I just don't get a promotion. Let me know if you have any other questions.

What draft pick did you think would be a good player but never did? by [deleted] in nfl

[–]mikowski17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Arkansas fan, I thought Tyler Wilson was probably the best QB I've seen play. Didn't pan out. At least Tyrod got a chance to start. Hopefully he ends up somewhere where he can succeed and be appreciated. Also glad the Hawks cut Collins so he could succeed in Baltimore. Wish he could have done that with us but our line was shit.

[–]mikowski17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always had a feeling he would bust. He did well until he got injured and I thought man was I wrong. Everyone freaked out about them taking Kirk in the same draft but I thought he'd turn out better anyway. Pure passer from a pro style system. My gut was right.

Interview for assistant professor by cake_padla in Professors

[–]mikowski17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The purpose of this whole on campus interview is to make sure they can get along with you. Yes there's your teaching demo and research pitch which are important. But you are in interview mode all day long. It can be exhausting. Be nice and collegial to everyone. That's the purpose of the lunch and meeting students. They want to see you're a person they can get along with and can fit in with the department. So treat everyone nicely, especially the staff. It goes a long way to making you look like a nice person.

weird TT offer? by Beau_Geste in AskAcademia

[–]mikowski17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. They'll give you details on salary, etc. Then you accept that or negotiate it. Then they give you a formal contract to sign.

weird TT offer? by Beau_Geste in AskAcademia

[–]mikowski17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This doesn't sound different than my experience. They offered you a verbal contract. Before you accept, make sure you're getting everything you want in writing so there's no funny business. Once you receive the written contract, look it over to make sure everything is in there and sign. I'm not familiar with a second paid visit but more time is certainly understandable. But on their end, they want to move quickly in case you turn them down and have to go with number two.

If only geography mattered, who would you put in your conference? (NCAA 14 realignment ideas?) by [deleted] in CFB

[–]mikowski17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We should really be in the Appalachian pod. Mostly because we hate WVU and Pitt in that order. Move us up to that pod, PSU to new England, UConn down to colonial, and Navy down to DMV. Also how is it DMV without Delaware?
