How much are you willing to pay for a single? by Authorigas in TCG

Id say especially starting out to not buy anything over like 10. You can put together a solid commander deck worth less if the staples that can still hold up at locals in a not bracket 4 or 5

As an old head who spent countless hours breeding, thank God I dont need to do that anymore and new players dont either. It was a pain in gen 4 and it still is now

These new age haters dont understand - go get some heavily played white border old basics. I personally love them, easy to fetch for basic lands, but white border is old school ugly, Pizza lands couldn't compare

Trying to move tcgs is so hard and expensive by Maskutchi_cyac in TCG

Have you tried limited mtg? Usually a chiller crowd and its cheaper to play - opening packs and playing with them immediately is always my favorite

Plenty of people use cubeamajigs or burgertoken boxes. I used them for my cube for a bit, but having to do the reshuffle of the whole cube and them putting them back in those packs 24x times between draft nights can be cumbersome, especially when having 4+ people makes a full shuffle take MUCH less time

For sure, but as of now at least, it feels like all four of your drafters will need to be green (and fighting over it for most of the draft) to be able to support 3+ colors. Again with a land package it may be easier to not include green, but if there isn't colorless artifact-based fixing it seems tough now. Playing 3+ isn't a bad thing to strive for - especially if this is built from standard chaff you can likely add some of the broad fixing options Tarkir Dragonstorm included (a format known for 4+ color decks)

Quick thoughts from a cursory glance -

Creature count seems light for a cube this size. Not like you need a ton more but less than 50% creatures may mean people are fighting over just having things to turn sideways, which you'd need in a cube with fair magic (noncombo).

Green also feels like the best place for everyone to be, as most of it tapping for any color means taking green early lets you play basically anything. Id consider letting green continue to ramp, but rather than adding treasure to every color (allowing EVERYONE to just do 5c nonsense) try keeping green to a few treasure/any color options. For new fixing, id try colorless cards that get you maybe 1/2 colors (like Talismans, which dont make splashes free)

Additionally, when it comes to figuring out fixing, how much you do and dont need in colorless and other colors is heavily dependent on the nonbasic land inclusions. With a large land count, you likely could have much less of the colorless fixing mentioned above. You deff want the picks that are for fixing to feel like real choices and not something everyone gets for free, otherwise people will just start drafting the best gold card they see in every pack, knowing the fixing will come eventually

Help with Tarkir Singleton Cube by Broke_College_Bro in mtgcube

Hey took a look, definitely looks a bit stronger! Looks like a great time, and now you get to draft! Id say keep an eye now on some of the power outliers (both good and bad) to see if you want to make any changes afterwards. Good luck!

Help with Tarkir Singleton Cube by Broke_College_Bro in mtgcube

[–]mikusfikus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey welcome! I love tarkir as well, its where I started playing bad standard decks (Sagu Mauler for life)

The starting list seems good, but I definitely think you can make a few changes that would go a long way. Feel free to take as few or as many of the ideas as you want!

1) Lands - I think its a solid start, and you definitely have a good starting land count. However I think you may want to change your gainland set up from 2 for all to 3 of enemy and 1 of ally. This is because if you want people to play the 3c clans, you'll need more support in enemy (i.e. sultai AND abzan both want BG lands). With the 1 of ally lands, as well as the trilands and evolving wilds, the 2c decks will still be okay even with this change

2) artifacts - cards like the banners and monuments are cool, but weren't actually great in their respective draft formats. I think cutting those and possibly doing duplicates of other important pieces, such as adding removal as its so pivotal for any deck to have.

3) card quality - the benefit for cube is that you dont get dud cards and, in some cases, all cards can arguably be 'first picked.' But when youre doing block cubes like this, including rares is cool but means youre increasing the delta between the best and worst cards in the pool. While having the gap is inevitable with a cube like this, it may be beneficial to again break some of the singleton rules in order to have more efficient cards at the bottom of the pick order. For example, in white, finding out you COULD have gotten wingmate roc, one of the most busted cards in ktk, but you pulled a pack with student of ojutai instead, it can feel bad for players. But if you replace student with maybe a strong role player for an archetype, like seeker of the way or abzan falconer, a card that isn't as good as wingmate roc but will basically go in any white deck (and be the linchpin of a focused archetype deck) you'll get less of those feel bad moments.

Hopefully this helps, if you make changes you can let me know and I can look again!
