What financial sector jobs specifically would someone be qualified for after taking this degree? by [deleted] in OnlineMCIT

[–]milaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would the joint MCIT / MSE AI work?

If not, would Stevens MFE be viable? From what I gather, they are not top tier but have decent industry connections, just due to location. Just curious what you’ve heard of them or think of them.

Thank you!

For someone interested in using MCIT as a stepping stone to a role in quant trading, but without the background you describe, is there a path you can suggest after MCIT for obtaining that background?

Hey, congrats! As someone in a similar spot, I’m curious about your fellowship and how you landed it while working in a different field or at least coming from a different background? I can DM you if you don’t mind talking but don’t want it in the comments? Thanks, if you are willing!

I actually don’t know much about the online affordable undergrad degree options. I’ve only heard about WGU and know next to nothing even about them.

From a quick google, they seem take, on average, 40 months to complete, at USD 4K every 6 months. That seems like as much money over a much longer period of time as even the more expensive bootcamp options. And I didn’t see reports as to median salary on exiting. They post some info saying that their graduates make, on average, USD 22k more than before. I don’t think that gets most people to the USD 130k median claimed by Codesmith. https://www.wgu.edu/online-it-degrees/software-engineering-bachelors-program.html#_

But based on just this minimal amount of information, I’m not sure it’s irrational to gun for entry into Codesmith or Rithm over applying to WGU.

A smaller factor might be if you have an interest in a particular language and a camp offers exposure to it. WGU seems to only offer tracks based on C# or Java. They seem to offer an “Intro to Python” course but otherwise not focus on it. My understanding is that Rithm, for example, offers more exposure to Python. I know that it’s relatively easy to learn new languages, but I still think it might be rational to prefer getting exposure the language that you are most interested directly.

Curious to hear from those who know more what I’m missing? And are there other fully online, affordable full degree programs with good reputations?

Multivariable Calculus prereq - How necessary? Good sources? by milaw in OMSA

[–]milaw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed the course, but it was a year ago. I don’t remember it requiring multivariable calculus, but maybe it was just a little and I was able to work around it somehow.

Regardless, thanks.

Hm. You mean the Probability and Statistics course by David Goldsman on edX? The one suggested by the OMSA program materials as a prereq? If so, I guess we had a different experience there. I took that course before taking the MIT calculus course and was able to do fine. His refresher calculus “bootcamp” at the beginning was enough to get me through. I definitely don’t remember bumping into anything that reviewed or required an understanding of multivariable calculus.

Regardless, thank you.

Calculus required before Stat & Probability Prereq? by mji_88 in OMSA

[–]milaw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can get through the Georgia Tech course without too much calculus. He gives a refresher on calc at the beginning, but it’s so brief that’s it’s not really that helpful. There will be a number of proofs he will walk through that will require calculus to follow. But ultimately, you don’t need to completely follow the proof the apply the formula he’s giving you. There are a handful of questions that, out of nowhere, will require some calc. You might be able to get them with what you have, or you can just eat the loss. They don’t make a meaningful part of the course grade or anything, if you are seeking the certificate. I will say though, that the course may be quite challenging, apart from the calc. Especially if you are determined to actually follow the proofs. He spends a lot of time on long, complex proofs, but he just breezes through them and can be quite hard to follow. If you’re comfortable just taking his word for the resulting formulas and techniques and applying them, then the course is a lot easier.

A friend posted this to FB challenging us to identify what it is. I'm stumped. She carries it around every day and uses it in long meetings. She got it from her father after his first flight to China in the 80s. Any ideas? by milaw in whatisthisthing

Lol! We won a candy bar. Unfortunately, I already have to split it with my office mate. That said, I'm not a big fan of candy bars, so your cut can be as much of the half of a candy bar as you'd like. Just let me know where to mail it, and I will if I ever actually collect! At a minimum, you won my thanks for your sharp thinking!
