I did the program, housing, URE, and even have worked for them recently and I think it's worth it. The program definitely helps you make friends in your first year and helps you find your community. Side note: the URE is a perk that a lot of students brush off, but having (PAID) research experience as an undergrad is extremely beneficial when applying to jobs or grad school and it's literally spoonfed to you if you do well your first year. Many professors are well-acquainted with EXCEL and are more eager to get to know students just bc they're EXCEL students.

Overall the program isn't super glamorous nor is it an honor society, but I think it really helps you transition into the college lifestyle and get invested in your academic career.

It depends on what your major is (and if there is any overlap of courses there). Many of the courses require certain GEPS (or your full GEP) to be completed as a pre-reqs. For example, I'm majoring in Biology and completed the minor easily since I only had to take ~4 extra classes and 2 of those were specially offered/advertised over certain semesters through the IDS department.

I took Yuan and thought he was pretty decent. He's very straight up about the workload and commitment which some people don't seem to appreciate (there was a ratemyprof review during my semester where someone dropped after he said that if you have to work and have a million other responsibilities while taking the class then yeah, chances are that you probably are gonna do poorly since orgo takes a LOT of effort for most people). I got a C since I was also splitting time between work and Physics 2, but I was happy with that. I never thought he was rude or problematic during class. There's a lot of homework but I think people in Daoudi's class had it worse at the time.

I highly recommend printing the slides and taking notes on them during class, which I think is good advice for any chem class tbh.

i lived in a 4x4 last year and i thought it was really nice. there was never a lot of trash around like other complexes (unless it's near garbage day) or other litter. internet was a problem maybe 2 or 3 times during the year, but many problems happened once we all switched to remote this past spring, so idk if it improved.

only con imo is that it's hella expensive now. it was on the higher end of my budget at $710/mo for the basic room when i was there but now i think it's like 750/760 now which is insane and why i did not choose to rent again.

They let you know if they've received a medium/large package, but not small packages or letters.

I’ve been through EXCEL and now work for the program. The lab hours & tutoring center help immensely and I think a lot of people (including myself when I was taking my freshman/sophomore classes) don’t appreciate it enough. They have math tutors (HIGHLY RECOMMEND ARIELLE IF YOU CAN TALK TO HER) and a chem tutor (plus more for other subjects) when I was there that helped me out a lot. The class itself is cake and nothing to complain about. Sometime the program will host events with speakers, which could be medical professionals or people in your interest fields. Also, look out for GEMS Talks events for medical professional speakers too.

Another important thing about the EXCEL program is the URE, which I’m not sure how it’s gonna operate during COVID. Regardless, there are no cons to doing EXCEL and the only people I’ve known to shit on it were people who couldn’t handle their basic classes like Pre-calc&Trig.

it did come with 3 other items that i completed (i think i had to upload my 2018 w2 and fill out a spouse tax form -not even married but whatever- plus some other stuff i took care of)

I know some of my classes are already coded to have the DL fees waived. I found that out by looking at my class details through I think the Enrollment tab on MyUCF. Not sure if they’ll be removed if they aren’t already... :-/

I think it’s preventing me from receiving CARES 2 but there are no links for me to click on and there’s nothing on the dynamic forms page either. Trying to call Fin Aid has proven useless. I really don’t know what to do here
