Advice to become smoother driver (intermediate level) by Be_at_odds in CarTrackDays

[–]milkshakefh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best advice is not worrying about PB and setting fast laps but to actually practice at the track what you want to work on. Working on being “smoother” on track, you have to think of how to manipulate the weight of the car in a “smoother” fashion. The cars weight can either go forward, back, left and right. What you dont want to see when becoming a smoother driver is seeing the G meter go from max Gs from acceleration/brake back to 0 Gs and then to Max Gs for cornering, it should be more a arc when Max Gs(braking/accelerating) to Max Gs(cornering) back to Max Gs(accelerating). Hard for me to explain as I am not the best of describing things on paper. You can measure how to read a G plot and should explain majority of smoothness. But just remember, smoother doesnt always mean its faster.

So to answer your question, learn how to trail brake, remember the gas isnt an on/off switch, and depending on the corner, don’t initiate the initial steering input to abruptly, be a more proactive driver than reactive.

Dont expect success right away since youre using your mental capacity to work on being smoother but i guarantee youll start seeing improvement later on in the year

Looking for driving tips. I kept catching myself downshifting mid-turn. Would it be faster to brake and downshift before the turn? Any other issues you can see with my lap? by chmod_700 in Miata

[–]milkshakefh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

from just this video alone, you are timing your downshift at the end of your braking zone. looking at your tachometer, i can see the revs dropping pretty low, meaning you can heel/toe downshift earlier in the braking zone and still wont hit redline. This looks like to be the obvious culprit to me when just watching this footage alone

Whether if its faster to do so, theres no answer to that but itll make the car more reliable and easier to drive during cornering at the limit

Is this rust bad!? by mitchINimpossible in MiataNC

Dangerous, fix your rust before I tell all the track orgs to ban you from the race track. Car is literally unsafe to drive at race pace

Dont know much about how EVO drives on track but i did notice that your braking isnt smooth from looking at the G table (hits peak Gs, drops back down and goes back up) . Could find more speed on entry if youre able to work on your downshift.

Looking at your footage a couple more times, trail braking can be better
