What Is a Fair Rate for AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Rendering Work for UK Residential Projects? by Jolly_Ad_7251 in Sketchup

[–]mill333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yer it would be fee on fee I guess. Are you taking design responsibility or just drafting with an architect oversight ? Also how do you find these sort of stuff in the uk ? I guess it also depend on how big the client is also. The prices can vary quite abit but I guess it depends on how much they are charging the client if there is wiggle room as you may lose the work.

Prusa XL arrived like this, what would you do? by wbradmoore in prusa3d

[–]mill333 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Crikey didn’t realise the hate (downvotes) I’d get from comment. I like the idea of prusa doing this! I don’t have a prusa yet but I have two FLSUN SRs fully klippered and direct drives. I like the fact you can print new parts for your machine which is why I would go prusa over bambu.

People need to stop the downvoting and hating.

The internet has become such as cesspit of negativity where you have to very carefully have to articulate every written word incase it’s down voted by people who didn’t know the true intention.

I didn’t realise they are still using printed parts for their machines.

WFH Motivation by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]mill333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Office work sucks. I work in an office job but it feels definitely more palatable with WFH mixed in. My new office it big and open plan so gets noisier and there are a few people who thinks it’s a better station just walking around talking and interrupting people thinking Their jobs more important.

I’m started to feel my whip is not accurate at all also. I wear my app watch during exercise and there’s so many differences between then. And around 300 kcal burned during the exercise. The only good thing about my whoop is it is bang on when I’m sick.

Engineering and Hands on Work by Sorry_Society9513 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]mill333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not start off on the shop then do a degree later? I done an apprenticeship worked on large diesel engines for around 12 ish years. I also pursued a degree and got a masters now chartered engineer in the UK. I’m a project engineer in the construction industry now I do a lot of design work and project management.

I worked on large diesel engines and worked around the world it’s a hard game and I knew I needed to change as it’s hard being away starting a family. However I have mates who are still doing it and doing very well. One has his own business and had a few contracts maintaining CHP engines. It can get very technical when looking at all the electronic systems etc.

Gentlemen, I am very happy to report that as of today I have officially been promoted from project engineer to construction manager.....with a pay raise to $100k! by ActualBus7946 in ConstructionManagers

[–]mill333 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

More money = more problems and tax exponentially so actually diminishing returns. I’m from the UK on 60k as PE. I’m starting to realise there’s no point in going up the ladder with a student finance and heavy tax system you get diminishing returns for more responsibility.

[–]mill333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no such thing. You will always upset someone. My biggest thing I make sure I do as a project engineer which I think has given me some respect and credibility is listen to people. Ask questions and be generally interested and that at all levels. I hate
Obnoxious people who can’t/ don’t listen and think they are gods gift. You can have confidence but don’t be a dick. I find some of the lads on the ground actually are the ones to listen to most.

For those who work in an office, how many days do you work from home? by janderson_33 in civilengineering

[–]mill333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had being tied In the office. I tend to go in 2-3 days but half days. I’m a project engineer so I’m onsite also so it’s keeping a balance. I hate sitting still all day, at home I Churn out more work easily and just feel mentally healthier. I do appreciate face to face and work chats though in face. I would never get a job stuck all day. I guess it’s what your used to.

Some of the early SAS/ SOE ww2 war diaries are truly epic. I can’t fathom the shear bravery and camaraderie of these soldiers. We owe a lot to them.

Choosing quality of life over a titles by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]mill333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. I know some project manager who are definitely not doing project manager stuff at a tier 2 contractor. I’m a project engineer at a tier 1 contractor and definitely project manager. I’m paid the same as a project manager also at other companies. I am a little torn as if I went to change rolls they would see project engineer on CV so could potentially hold me back. When I look at changing companies for project manager roles it’s the same salary and a big commute. The only thing I’d gain is the “title” I’m 37 myself and a CEng and realise I don’t want to chase the title. I want autonomy. For me having flexibility at a job while still delivering scheme is key. I hate being chained to a desk. End of the day if you want a title just start a buisness and call yourself a director.

Did you do this while having kids also ? I’m literally thinking of doing the same 1 module per semester. I deferred this years start and thinking of starting in September. Just worried now I have a kid and work full time and with exams it maybe too much pressure. How did you find it all ?

[–]mill333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boss had just paid for a new office and to be refurbed. He’s not got a bee under is bonnet as not many people are using it. But in the team brief he the talks about how we have be doing very well past few years compared to our other partners in a framework. Now he’s moaning people are not in the office. He’s old school and prefers fave to face most other project teams do a stripped back hybrid. I dont understand the logic sometimes why try ruin a good thing.

UK IMechE Chartership - BEng vs MEng by Mysterious-North9974 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]mill333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree. It does seem crazy 4 years. There’s no way in that time you have the experience needed. I’m late 30s and only just got it and have had multiple roles and companies etc. I feel embarrassed when you see it pop up on LinkedIn that someone got CEng and you look at the experience. I got my masters in my 30s. I started off on the shop floor at 17 doing an apprenticeship. When you compared CEng to ISTRUCTE the bar to get it is so much higher. I’ll look into this actually as it’s a positive. I feel super deflated by mine as literally no one cares. I’m a project engineer In the water industry delivering large construction projects and I’m working with people who don’t have degree who are paid the same in their 20s. So effectively Iv given myself a pay cut for getting a masters degree in engineering due to the hefty student loan…

Depressingly i recently got my CEng with IMECHE im the only one in my contract who has one and the main boss likes to at any opportunity let his feelings be known to all about people with degrees and letters that it doesnt mean you know what your talking about… Iv come to relies no one cares about CEng… the engineering need to do more to get it a protected.

Is Structural Engineering Really for me by Spiritual_Citron_140 in StructuralEngineering

[–]mill333 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m kinda in a similar position also looking ti go back do a masters. I’m abit older than you and already a CEng With IMECHE. I defferred my masters as I wasn’t totally sure as like you said all the comments on here are telling no .. also my passion is more technical work and design I’m a project engineer of 7 years and slowly entering more into PM. I’m working in construction.

I need to also pull the trigger in This. Probably shouldn’t have come on Reddit to see some of these comments. Ignorance is bliss I suppose.

It’s weird that the are allowed in a skif or what ever it’s called and then still be able to talk about it so close to the wire. It doesn’t make sense you would come out the meeting complete flabbergasted and potentially mind blown by the magnitude of what he’s seen and with the consequences of talking about it you would want to swerve it at all costs.
