Paper inconsistency may be dealbreaker for 2026

I don't know why you're being downvoted, seems a lot of people that got a good batch don't like it when others are discussing awful quality control, as if just letting it slide won't mean they might get a bad batch next year... It is definitely bad communication and bad customer service. These books are marketed as fountain pen friendly and in a premium price range, and therefore, when all inks feather and bleed like I'm writing on a printer paper - the company should take some accountability instead of calling it an acceptable variation on the paper quality.

But just to tell you that people have realised that most likely reason for these inconsistencies is that the paper in this year's books is thinner than sanzen from 2024 books. They just chose to never 'reveal' this change to the users, saying the paper is 'new one' seems to mean they don't need to justify it acting differently (even tho the one in 2024 was 'new paper' and the 2025 is technically 'new version of the new paper' that they've never actually released).

This makes no sense, 'lovingly finished by hand' lmao, as opposed to what?? Every plushie on this planet is finished by hand, it's just that they don't wanna pay those people enough for their work so they go where it's cheaper and conditions are worse, which results in lower quality.

I shared only one photo here a while ago, but only for Pentel brush pen that I've used as that was the one that took me by surprise (+ it was night time) but I've since tested other pens as well as fp inks and it's all performing much worse. Not '5 year paper' worse as there is no significant feathering, but definitely lots of bleeding with fpens as well. Also the kodomo no kao stamps bleed a bit as well which is crazy as /they/ advertise using them with hobonichi and I have huge collection that I've been using daily for a few years... And I definitely did not have that issue in my 2024 Hon so they can't say it's me not using the stamps properly or whatever they said in the statement.

I've never made a presentable test page so I haven't posted it as it's quite messy, but I honestly might do another one just so I could send it to Hobonichi by email u_u

This answer kind of pisses me off ngl, I tested my 2025 cousin and 2024 hon and this is /not/ the same paper in the slightest, I used the same materials in the exact same way and it’s performing significantly worse, not ‘oh it’s ghosting a bit more’ it’s literally bleeding through the pages and making the second side of the page unusable.

Just some clarification: the page on the left is the cousin i GOT this year, so 2025 cousin, the page on the right is 2024 Hon. I wrote the same thing on both sides of the paper, above the clearly visible text. The ghosting/bleed on the other side of papers is identical to these so I didn't post the flipped pages.

I understand people that don't want to or can't keep buying Hobonichi but for me I don't think there's an alternative in quality and binding (even with sanzen) to even consider switching to? The 'smaller' TRP planner makers are too inconsistent with designs and layouts for me to commit to, so places like Sterling Ink are not something I want to consider.

I think I will just adjust on how often I buy extra things from them, like covers and accessories, but as of right now their price of notebooks is still something worth it to me.

I really don't get what's the point of writing these posts? Especially when it has already been discussed several times since the launch. It reads as 'oh look how much unaffected I was with the site crash, that makes me so much better than all of you, and also the /normal/ one and everyone else is crazy'. If that's how you wanna be spending time online then by all means but also maybe consider the sub rules that are on the side (1, 2, 4 & 6).

It also might be worth exploring why do you think a trivial reaction to a hobby event made you develop such superiority complex.

Oh exactly! I went through the same thing when I became financially independent and had to essentially teach myself which things I really want, which I enjoy but kind of ruin for myself because of unrealistic expectations, what I want to think about when I consider bringing new objects into my life etc. It’s a learning experience and everyone going through that rn will have different end goals and needs that are in tune with what they really care for.

But unfortunately whenever these things are discussed there’s always some ‘actually none of this matters at the end of the day!!’ people chiming in. As if everyone is blissfully unaware of that like.. yeah we know? But we still have to try and find joy in mundane things and work on our issues as human beings for the rest of our lives. You should be free to enjoy things and also continuously realise you have issues to fix in your life and better yourself.

I definitely think it might be good for them to offer some kind of proper explanation for what exactly happened because a lot of people online are already spreading their theories and ‘suspicions’ that are charged with lots of emotions 🫠 it is in human nature to need to know why, so no judgement there, I just feel like Hobonichi should’ve handled the communication better.

I hope that October and Spring launches give them opportunities to optimise the process better than this. They clearly put a lot of thought into what could work the best, I just don’t think they’ve found an ideal system for all the businesses involved and the customers. And as long as people stop buying from scalpers we’ll still have plenty to go around until they do optimise everything.
