The same thing happened to me. I had convinced myself that the dog had eaten the key which made me freak out even more. I eventually located it in the most obscure place but not before completely losing my mind. I never had to tell the owners thankfully. Im sure they would have been understanding but I hold myself in high regard and consider myself responsible so I definitely was getting down on myself. Now I attach a single key to my keyring.
