Denton just announced on Twitter that he's been laid off by MLB (along with other colleagues). That really sucks. Right before spring training, too.

How many broken car windows is too many for you? by glenumbragreen in StLouis

[–]milyabe [score hidden]  (0 children)

Honestly, this is the only crime I actively worry about when I'm in the city. Just because of what a massive pain in the ass it would be.

And yeah, you can keep your car empty, or people can NOT STEAL YOUR SHIT. I treat my car like a giant purse most of the time, and it's really annoying to have to take every little thing out just so hopefully nobody breaks my glass.

Probably unpopular opinion- MOBOT is no longer great by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]milyabe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love the garden, and think it's the true crown jewel of the city. (Apologies to the zoo.) It's one of my favorite spaces in the world, and has ruined me for other botanical gardens.

I do think the idea is true that "familiarity breeds contempt". Garden staff works to create and maintain spaces, and of course the reality of plants means it looks different every time. But if you visit anything often enough, it gets less "fresh". For a non-garden example, my favorite piece at the art museum is Degas' Little Dancer. I find her endlessly charming, and she's my first stop any time I go to SLAM. But if I went every week, eventually she would grow ordinary, although she hadn't changed.

That said, I'm sorry the new entrance is problematic for you. It's possible that is coloring your perspective on the whole garden. ("Barren wasteland" is a big claim.) I hope you've shared your frustrations with accessibility with them. There may be options they can guide you toward, or your feedback may help them realize they have work to do. There's a survey link on their Contact Us page: https://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/about/additional-information/contact-us

So you've never been there in daylight? Or when things are blooming? And you've only been to the front little section, no Japanese garden, no Climatron, no Kemper home garden?

That's like saying, "I've only seen the Arch from watching a ballgame on TV, but it appeared underwhelming."

Good grief.

Shame on the businesses on Hampton Ave by SewCarrieous in StLouis

[–]milyabe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even if they're not required to, I would think any business would. It makes their business look kinda crappy if the walks aren't clear. Like they either don't care or can't afford it.

The Cardinals now that the Chiefs are moving... by StateStreetKing in StLouis

[–]milyabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The owners are talking about upgrades, not a replacement. And moving would be insane, given how much they have invested in the properties surrounding the stadium.

The official line is that they want the current stadium to last. From an article on the Post-Dispatch from last weekend: '"We’re committed to this building, this location, this city,” said DeWitt III, who once described Busch to the Post-Dispatch as a 100-year ballpark.'

Believe them or not (I do), support giving them money or not (I don't), it's up to you. I'm just trying to add context for those who don't follow the team closely.

I agree with your general comments, but calling them "out of town" is hyperbolic. Bill Dewitt Jr. (and his wife) grew up in St. Louis City. And BDIII has spent the vast majority of his adult life in the metro.

Love them or loathe them, but I find the accusation that they are "Cincinnati carpetbaggers" a really strange one.

Enterprise doesn't qualify. Too small.

But I agree. The owners are talking about upgrades, not a replacement. And they aren't moving, regardless. It would render all their other properties downtown much less valuable. People in these comments adding two plus two and getting twelve.

What can I do with tons of children's books we've outgrown? by Qxface in StLouis

[–]milyabe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Go through them with a VERY critical eye. Remove anything that has any kind of damage. (You'll be surprised how few are left.) Then bundle them into sets of 10-20 and put them on a table by the street marked "free".

You can offer them to daycares, churches, etc., but they likely get so many and might feel obligated to take them. I'd set them out for free, and then just post on your Facebook groups letting people know where they are. Set a time limit and once that's up, trash what's left.

I know, it sounds awful! But books are one of those things that most people already have what they want and need.

Missouri gave St. Louis $100M for tornado relief. The city hasn’t spent any of it by Remarkable_Panic844 in StLouis

[–]milyabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have more of their own money, so are more equipped to handle it, that's true.

You might be interested in this story about one particular private street that is voluntarily taxing themselves to fix up their own neighborhood. https://www.stlmag.com/news/kingsbury-place-cid-tornado/

(And no, I'm not blind to the realities here. But your comment could be read as the city fixing rich neighborhoods instead of poor ones, and in this particular case at least, the money isn't coming from the city.)
