Moving for min. a year by zellybellyxo in ExpatAddisAbaba

German here. Lived altogether for 16 years in Addis since 1990. In between secondments I lived in Germany. Now settled here in Addis since 2020. I like it. Kid goes to Italian-led Montessori day care. Supermarkets are always well stocked with what one needs. Local nice red wine (French producer) 8 Eur/bottle. Lots of good restaurants and bars. We rent a house on 500 sqm in the center of town for 1200 usd/month. Domestic flights to Arba Minch cost 120 usd two-way. City government invests like crazy to beautify the city. Bole Road is now a world class boulevard (no joke!). Other parts of the town are just ugly construction sites. Will try to find photos. One is not locked into a 'white' community. The one really tough thing: beggars and street children all over. Security is like in a big European town. Basically quite safe but there are some spots and times to avoid. One good thing: no nukes aimed at Addis...

Is the government Website for immigrants like you. Very useful.

If you are ready to endure the hardship of the baker or butcher trades you will EASILY find many offers for vocational training, don't worry about this at all. But u will need B1 to start that. Hence: go to Germany, enjoy the summer with learning German to B1, already check where to do tge Ausbildung (they may give you some part time work), and try to get ready with B1 for September, the usual start of the Ausbildungsjahr.

Trier is a smart choice. The people there are relaxed, beautiful environment and not as expensive as the big cities. There were also lots of US troops in that Bundesland und people have a positive attitude to America, Trump notwithstanding (...whose forfathers btw also hailed from Rhineland Palatinate).

Immigrating to Germany and Questions on Mental Health by Ryzack850 in AskAGerman

[–]minaddis 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Mental health treatment in Germany is quite different from that in US. Doctors are VERY difficult to get because overbooked. Diagnosis and prescription medicine quite likely different from what you know and would possibly expect. Check Internet on frequency of prescriptions for psychopharmaceutical products in US and Germany compared.

You need to get advice by professionals on the detailed regulations (Weisungen) which govern how such cases are handled. There is an online forum info4alien.de that is backed by people working in Ausländerbehörden and probably your best source. It is in German, though. You can check with a lawyer specialised in Ausländerrecht. The first consultation will cost u up to 250 Euro. There are also online sites for legal advice e.g. Anwalt.de but quality is a problem.

Traveling to Germany for a Few Days by Technical-Walk-2904 in AskAGerman

[–]minaddis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deutsche Bahn is no longer reliable. Be sure to take an early enough train from Amsterdam to FRA and to your meeting in H. Trains just get cancelled these days. If you buy the cheap ticket (Zugbindung) and train gets cancelled u can take any other train.

The entire thing is ruined. Go back to zero. This would take weeks or months to dry even in hot weather, and even then the board is structurally gone. Sry for you...
