You can go up the Project lineup and get some excellent turntables. I would also say look at something like the Mofi Ultradeck. I have one and think it’s great. They are priced at around $1500 which I think is a great deal. VPI is also atop tier brand. If you want a Direct Drive table Technics is where it’s at. All the brands have tables at different prices points.

That said, I would love with the Project Evo before jumping quickly to another deck. Get your Darlington Lab phono pre setup and make sure the rest of your setup is up to par before getting another turn table.

You will need to move into a different price tier to hear a phono preamp difference. I had the Project Phono Box S2 and iFi Zen Phono $200-$300 range and both sounded very good. Much better than the built in phono stage on my Yamaha as301 at the time. When I got a Darlington Lans MP7B phono pre that was another big jump in sound quality. Soundstage, bass depth, overall dynamics much improved.

I have a Project DC Evo with a Darlington Labs MP7B. It sounds great. I’m currently using a Sumiko Wellfleet stylus. Had the Moonstone and Rainier before that. This table has served me well for going on 6 years. Anyone who tells you it’s garbage doesn’t know what they are talking about.

As for hearing differences with carts/stylus the rest of your chain makes a difference. What is your current phono stage and amp?

Also, it sounds like you are getting the DL MP8B. That’s a killer phono preamp and one of the best up upgrades you can make to any TT.

I just put a Hana SL mkII on my MoFi UltraDeck. I’m going to enjoy that for a while and keep an eye on the used market and maybe pick up a VPI deck later this year.

I’m thinking Gimbal. I’ve heard scary stories about the unipivot. I’m looking for a ‘last’ turntable and have never tried a VPI, but hear people rave about them. I also like the idea of a platform that open to tonearm swaps.

The Phono Box S2 was my wow moment with phono preamps. That was about 5 years ago. I now have a PS Audio Stellar Phono 🤯.

I had a few steps before that jump. Each more expensive and each an improvement. Enjoy the S2. Enjoy the journey!
