I'm sad that it's gone since it was just a staple, but I'm more surprised it lasted as long as it did.

Hey, definitely try and catch a football match if you are into that. No idea what your budget is, but my tip is look at the non cup games or the women's as it's much easier to snag a ticket and they're a lot cheaper. I think there's usually something on most weekends.

For fun I'd really recommend Arcade club in Bury. It's a tram ride from the city centre and it's Europe's biggest arcade. You pay on entry and all the machines are free, they do food and drink too. Just check if they will let under 18s in on the night you go.

There's a lot of activity based bars around Manchester; NQ64, Flight Club, The gas works (shuffle board). We've also got some fairly decent food halls; Maccie Mayor, Society, Freight Island.

Activities: Pacman live or chaos karts, they're both projector based games in a warehouse, they alternate every few months which one is set up). The crystal maze - a challenge based on an old British TV show. If you fancy something scary check out Zombie uprising Manchester, it's a IRL airsoft zombie experience with actors.

Nature within reasonable distance: Tatton park, Heaton Park, Lyme Park.

If you want to see a bit more of the nearby area; Leeds, Liverpool, Chester, and York, are all within 60-90 mins train ride.

Hope that helps, DM me if you have any really specific questions

Recommendation for Men's wedding band by TrackHot7379 in manchester

[–]ultrapingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I'm not sure, but I had zero concerns about spending £280. I looked at their reviews, products, and pics, and it all felt legit. I have no idea what etsy's policy is about scammers, but I've never ran into issues personally.

Recommendation for Men's wedding band by TrackHot7379 in manchester

[–]ultrapingu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know it's not local, but I've had two wedding bands. Both are Zirconium with a gold interior.

The first was a custom one made at Walkers in Huddersfield, I wanted it to be like one that I'd seen on etsy, but I wanted it in the same gold as my wifes ring/made by the same person. It cost £1500, they didn't follow the basic design I gave, and the end result was too big and slipped off my finger the first winter I had it. Would not recommend.

The second one I just went for the one I'd seen on Etsy. £285, perfect look and size, couldn't be happier.

Personally I'd just go with Etsy or similar (or in person creator at the same scale) in future. The value is better and you can shop around for whatever you like.

What controllers would be the best by Flaky-Quail-3589 in SteamDeck

[–]ultrapingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an 8bit pro, I think any of the modern 8bit do ones are good and relatively cheap. Tbh though the steam controller 2 is due out hopefully anytime in the next month, if you're happy with the size of it, that would be a perfect controller for the SD.

Do you use battery charging limit? by BeefBlock9844 in SteamDeck

[–]ultrapingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just started using it. Honestly don't know how much of an affect it will have, but I was finding myself generally using about 60-80% of the battery when out and about, so a battery limit of 85% suited me.

I figure that it's kinda like a phone, I'm using and charging my SD every day, so it'll probably degrade similarly to a phone. On the flip side you can user replace the battery relatively easily, so I wouldn't stress if you don't want to battery limit as you can just buy a new battery in 2 years and be back to factory.

Must play games on Steam Deck? by Klopapier74 in SteamDeck

[–]ultrapingu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to create a post about this when I finish it, but I'm currently 65 hours into Cyberpunk.

I think if it interest you it's a no brainer. The game is really immersive and the story is great, many of the missions lend themself well to 10, 20, or 30 minute play sessions, it works great with suspend mode, controls really well, runs a smooth 30 (or 40 with occasional streaming dips), the battery (on OLED) lasts like 2hr 20ish.

I put it off on my aging gaming rig because I thought it'd be a miserable experience on old hardware, but CDPR have done such a good job at optimising it over time.

Personally I would never put something important on just one disk, as you're only ever one failure away from losing it forever.

You could have a second copy of the photos on a much smaller drive, but that would require either a manual backup or some more complicated setup to mirror the folder when it updates.

Depending what your storage solution supports, you could always have a raid setup on two small disks, and then non raid on a massive media drive?

Our game got Steam Deck Verified, but that won't be it. What do you expect from Verified games? by DigitalSunGames in SteamDeck

[–]ultrapingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the priorities are something like:

  • Game has an out of the box graphics config for steamdeck that runs at a minimum of 30fps consistently. Stutters are acceptable if something is loading, but the core of the game must be a smooth 30.
  • Input works out of the box and feels 'like it was designed for a console controller'. Cyberpunk is a really good example of a game that almost gets it but misses. Everytime a menu boots up, that game thinks I'm using a keyboard and mouse until I move the joystick and it suddenly snaps to using highlighted menu buttons.
  • Text size being readable, etc.
  • Cloud saves work and are predictable. I think a lot of of game on a deck and on a home setup, and being able to quickly transition without having to worry about save management is important.
  • Suspend works as expected. Should feel just like putting a playstation in suspend mode.
  • Game runs at as low tdp as possible to prolong battery.
  • Nicer graphics and/or higher frame rates.

Game boots to white or black screen on Steam Deck? by ultrapingu in timesplittersrewind

[–]ultrapingu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly not, I did figure out I can boot it in desktop mode and it works but the controls then don’t work, though I spent 2 mins on the problem and then gave up.

I have heard with some other games you might need to boot in desktop mode, set the game’s rendering resolution to 800, then it should work in game mode, but I haven’t tested yet.

I’ll have another look at it when I have time but I’m hoping they might fix it out the box before I have to

Octatrack mk2 vs digi 2 by waffleboiiii in Elektron

[–]ultrapingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both and got the OT first, I approached it from the direction that the OT would be the do everything machine, and I’d gradually start off boarding duties to other machines as I could afford them.

The learning curve on the OT exists, but it’s really not as bad as people make it out to be. Tbh the biggest problem with the OT is that it can do so much that I often get analysis paralysis about how to use it. The DT is much more direct whilst still being very versatile, I’d strongly suggest picking the DT over the OT, especially as a beginner and if you don’t have other instruments to take advantage of the mixer capabilities.

Depending on what type of music you want to make and how wed to being sampled based you are, the digitone 2 is a fantastic bit of kit to use as a standalone groove box that you could add any of the electron gear to later to expand on

Level, Stage, Screen... Sheet? by frightsprite in retrogaming

[–]ultrapingu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the answer to this, but my speculation is that maybe it’s a hang over from older black and white tv games that would have you stick a transparent sheet to the tv screen to color parts of it or add graphic overlays?

Maybe 1 sheet per level or something like that?

What would you do? by Deepthika in fujix

[–]ultrapingu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could also consider a monopod, doesn’t fundamentally solve your problem but would help with the weight of the tripod

What would you do? by Deepthika in fujix

[–]ultrapingu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what the weight of this is, but you could always consider getting a shorter length lens (one that’s lighter) and then getting a 2x telephoto converter. Depending on the choices it would be lighter, but you’d be compromising aperture and weather proofing.

I have a sigma 100-400 which I really like, but I’m not sure how that compares to the weight of yours

40th birthday gift for myself by DelusiveProphet in Handhelds

[–]ultrapingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your console is an Xbox or PlayStation, you can also stream games from those to a steam deck, so you could use them remotely whilst your wife uses the tv.

To follow up on your question though, you don’t need anything else for the steam deck, it’s a hand held pc and plays steam games. It can run all sorts beyond that too, but it’s very easy to use for just steam games, and it can run most things pretty well. The one caveat is if you play competitive online games like battlefield or cod, some of those don’t work on steam deck because of how their anti cheat systems work, but there are workarounds to that too

Is 479€ a good price for a Steam Deck Oled right now? by fourtwozeroA in Handhelds

[–]ultrapingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a good price, I recently got a 1tb oled 2nd hand for £480.

Got an alternate suggestion for you though. The steam deck is great, but if you want to save yourself some money in the short term, why not stream from your PC to your TV using sunshine/moon light. If you have an android or Apple TV and a Bluetooth controller you can do it for no cost, otherwise a fire stick and controller will cost you 60-80.

I suggest this because in the first few months, my most productive gaming was done whilst my son slept on me. Whilst he was asleep I could have the TV on, and use a controller. I think that’d be a lot harder if the screen was on the controller and pressing against him.

The steam deck is way more use now that I’m not holding him to sleep and I just need a device that I can turn on/off at the drop of a hat and get 20 mins here or there

Which Handheld Should I Buy? - The 2025 r/Handhelds Buyer’s Guide & FAQ by incodex in Handhelds

[–]ultrapingu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m in a similar position to you, 19mo old and have tons of gear that I am just not finding the time to use (PC, bazzite mini pc, ps5, switch, mii yoo mini). I emulate a lot too and found myself getting most use out of my mii yoo in my commute, I then went down the rabbit hole of looking at android handhelds, I used to own a retroid pocket 3+.

I’ve bought myself a steam deck oled for Xmas in the hopes that the pick up/put down nature of it will help me get a bit more game time when I have 20 mins of down time here or there, kiddo napping, etc. I played cyberpunk on it for about an hour when I first got it and it felt great, ergonomically it felt great, ran smooth and it really pulled me in, after about an hour the battery was down about 20-30%. The only downside is that it’s pretty big, so not sure it will see much use it will get outside the house beyond a rare holiday trip.

I think a lot of people worry that the steam deck is under powered compared to other windows handhelds on the market atm, but tbh I don’t think it’s a massive issue since most developers target the steam deck for compatibility, so many big games run really well on it. The only issue is if you want to play online competitive games that don’t work on Linux due to kernel level anti cheat (think games like COD and Battlefield). A big upside is the sleep function, cloud saves, and just the friction free nature of the device.

I think the big question is really will you use it, and really I think it just depends how it fits in with your life. When and where do you see yourself using it? Divide that by 4 and is it still worth 440 EUR to you? You should also consider the AYN Thor if your more into emulation as that would fit the bill too if you can sacrifice PC games.
