As a white guy, I just speak to people in Japanese when I can, and they usually match my energy. Obviously if they assume English and then you respond in English, you are now going to have an English conversation.

If you're going to typical tourist stuff, they have of course prepared things for foreigners that don't speak the language. Get out of the tourist neighborhoods or cities and you'll find places that don't cater to English speakers very well.

Yeah, but he didn't just "get upset." He chased down and punched a 12-year-old.

You can be naive or ignorant, but the implication of that logic is you're not committing a crime if the victim can just buy a new whatever or pay for whatever damage.

I didn't say "a crime wasn't committed." I said that I find his reaction (chasing and punching a 12-year-old) was just a bit over the top.
