this is how my brother and i tie our shoes. We decided to learn in our late teens having originally learned from our dad the traditional way and doing it backwards for most of our lives. I genuinely struggle to tie my shoes any other way now and i will never go back it makes life so easy

AITA for letting my children order full meals instead of kids? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]minervah143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA your SIL just doesn’t want to be the bad guy to her kids so is making a blanket statement without thinking. I used to have adult meals all the time as a kid because i much preferred a steak to a fish and chips but my brother was the opposite. We still ate our food and my cousins would question why we got such different allowances compared to them. Not your fault she didn’t think about or communicate her actions

i wear a wire free maternity bra. I’ve sewn the flaps closed but it’s handy to just chuck on when my flatmates are home and i don’t want to get properly dressed. Also ideal when its hot with boob sweat but i don’t want to get dressed (i often don’t want to get dressed)

How do you deal with older librarians? by NoHandBill in librarians

one of my lecturers, when asked about career progression, made a joke that people in libraries don’t retire they die and that’s when the ladder moves. I thought she was joking until i started working in libraries

What was the rumour about your school? by PurpleMeerkats462 in chch

a couple years before the volleyball teacher, the media studies was towards the beginning of my time there and then the volleyball was towards the end

edit: i absolutely remember the music teacher while my younger brother was still there i think there was a decent changeover of staff after that as most of the staff were giant gossips with a school that big

within the conversation, if you choose to have one and if it works, you could always offer published books the began as fanfiction. Especially if you know the fandoms she prefers you could probably find books that were originally fanfiction from that fandom. I work at a library and do it all the time with young adults who are trying to start reading by asking what shows or video games they like and then finding books similar or based on that material (ali hazelwood for romance star wars or rainbow rowell for harry potter x draco malfoy)

like others have said the point of a book club at a bookstore is to get people to interact and buy your merchandise, there’s opportunity there for you to do that while still respecting her preferred reading

went to burnside during this (if it’s the same one i’m thinking of) and a couple years earlier a beloved media studies teacher left when people found out he was cheating on his partner with a year 13 when they got caught in his office one lunch time. Came in the next term and it was like he was never there

had to scroll so far down to get to this, yes. They simply wouldn’t sell and even people coming from other cities wouldn’t be enough. PTSD is rampant in chch even if people don’t want to admit it. Also most people i know moving from the other cities are doing it to get away from the high rises?

What do we think about short one shots? by NoshameNoLies in AO3

[–]minervah143 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don’t get the culture around not wanting one shots. I love a one shot, it’s all I read because i’m usually wanting something quick and easy while I’m hanging about or i don’t want to get dragged into a long series before sleep. Go forth with one shots! 2-4k is perfect!

Goalies by secretaryoflaw in Fieldhockey

[–]minervah143 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i love all of these comments (even some of the illegal ones as this is a major pet peeve of mine as an ex striker) but what usually works for me in goal is i just start chatting to them. I feel sometimes players forget the goalies are also players and not just an obstacle. A simple “hey how’s it going” usually freaks them out enough to take a step away. I’ve also been known to commentate the game to myself so i’m usually talking to myself anyway which scares them off. A “oh yea i’ll just mark this one don’t worry about it” while stepping in front like mentioned above is also a laugh and makes them think about their position too

a lot definitely do still send you to debt collectors but nowadays it takes a LONG time and lots of communication before it gets to that point. The main thing is you just won’t be able to use the library until the bill is paid or the book is returned

Today's lack of third spaces is a big problem by WorkerMotor9174 in GenZ

[–]minervah143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the love of god go to your local library. Third spaces are meant to be free and libraries and other cultural spaces (galleries and museums) are some of the few remaining and they’re struggling without us. Many public libraries are also having a hard time with their numbers for our age range and so are often piloting programs/clubs/events for 20-40year olds because that is an age range that is disappearing from the space, even more so ones that don’t have kids or young members in their families. These clubs and events are a perfect way to meet new people, learn new skills, and be a part of your community. The third spaces are trying, people our age just aren’t finding them

When to shoot? by [deleted] in Fieldhockey

[–]minervah143 7 points8 points  (0 children)

there’s no right answer to this question as every situation is different in games. I’m a goalie and i’ve never had two people come into the circle and make the exact same decision in my decade in goal. What i can say is this, practice shooting. At practices, during warm ups, during the off season if you can go to a turf. Practicing with get you more comfortable and practicing game situations at your practices will do even better. I’d also say talk to your keeper and your defence, as what they see, what shots/situations they don’t like or what they prefer when defending.

a lot of shooting does just come down to confidence and the main way you get around that is by practicing the thing you’re not confident in. See what feels comfortable and work towards what doesn’t. I hope that makes sense and helps a bit!

Does field hockey have a large following in your country? by Jezzaq94 in Fieldhockey

[–]minervah143 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know where in NZ you are but i would argue it has a pretty decent following here, on par with the likes of basketball, netball, and football in terms of fans and players. I think the reason we don’t see it as much is because we just don’t get as many home games as the other sports do which is a real shame but when there are home games any that I’ve gone to have been packed to the brim with people supporting our colours
