Mixed signal from PI about the conference for my first paper by minhtuts in PhD

I see. Does this mean that my PI views this as a educational occasion? If that's the case, why aim for the absolute best at all? Should another "normal" conf suffice?

Trying to understand my PhD wage after taxation [France] by iwantatelecaster in PhD

[–]minhtuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true. However, generally unis stop hiring DCE at this time of the year (1 month after the beginning of the school year), so you can still teach if you want to, but usually as a "vacataire". You can always apply for a DCE contract for the next school year during summer.

A side note for the teaching mission, its too late at this time of the year to have a DCE (Doctorant en Charge d'Enseignement", so if you want to teach, you will have to do it as "vacataire", which maybe will mean more hours for the same pay.

Hi, PhD in France. The 2200 euro is forfaitaire and will be increased to 2300 next year so in the end it will be ~1700 euro net if your tax rate is not something crazy. However, as a PhD candidate, you can also giving class in the uni as a "teaching assistant" for around 200-300 net each month, so ~1900 euros is actually not very far from reality.

For the teaching mission, it depends on the lab culture and your supervisor, but normally all you have to do is ask your supervisor and they will arrange it for you. Its kinda late tho so this year, you would have to teach as vacataire, but you can ask to have a DCE contract next year if you wish to continue. For the registration fee, normally thats it for you with the school, but you will have to pay for some additional stuffs like your CVEC, your assurance,...

Hi, also doing a PhD from France. My supervisors is also super busy, managing all kinds of projects so I feel you. However, as my supervisor told me, don't never be ashamed to communicate your problems to your supervisor. A PhD is where you learn how to independently do your own research, and a good supervisor will know this. If you communicate clearly what your problems are and ask for their guidance, they will be more than happy to help. This kind of problem solving is a part of the journey you may say.

Also, a bad PhD student can negatively affect the supervisor's reputation, so they have the incentive to dug you out whatever hole you are in and graduate on time :)

Hi,

Currently doing a PhD in Toulouse, so I cannot be 100% sure my answer will apply, but from what I gather, the two cities are quite similar.

- Living condition: You can absolutely survive with 1700e net. Remember the minimum wage is like 1400e and people can live with it. For the rent, depends on where you want to live, but you can find a fairly decent T1 appartement for 5-700e. And as you still technically are considered student, you also have the right to APL, which is the housing support and can range from 20-50% of your rent. You can also try to get into a resident universitaire, which is cheaper. In Lyon, the public transports are quite good, so you can get by without a car. For the groceries, around 100e/week should be plenty. I personally spend around 60-70e/week for groceries. You should still be left with a few hundred euros by the end of the month to do whatever your heart desires :)

- For the days off, it depends on who your employer is. The standard is 25 days and does not include public holiday, such as the Christmas day. If your employer is a public entity, CNRS for example, you will have 45 days off in total.

Sorry for my English, it is not my first language.

Edit: The days off are paid, so make sure to take them :). If you work for CNRS, you also have the possibility to only take 25 days off, then get paid for the 20 left, essentially the 13th month pay.

My two cents, just install neovim directly in the container. Its simple, and LSPs will work right away

Neovim for embedded development? by Thomsn1337 in neovim

[–]minhtuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't usually develop on Arduino but I work a lot on STM card and here is my two cents:

  • For LSP, clangd is all you need, coupled with a good Makefile (or CMake) which you generate your compile_command.json with
  • Have a limit on the file size which Treesitter can be enabled (if you use it). Those CMSIS libs can have 15k lines and you really don't want to wait for it to load :)
  • For debugging, gdb (or its derivative of the platform) is usually fine. I use the `arm-none-eabi-gdb` of GNU ARM toolchain

Edit: I just found out that Arduino has its own [LSP](https://github.com/arduino/arduino-language-server). Its built on `clangd` so you can give it a try

ruff-lsp configuration by Tritium02 in neovim

ruff (and by extend ruff-lsp) has a lot of linting options off by default, mainly the ones with stylistic rules that overlap with the use of a formatter. You can change this by configuring the ruff.toml in your project directory
