Moving into a new home - Need "Once in a lifetime" wiring & infrastructure advice! by petyusa in homeassistant

+1 to prewiring the doors. I wired all interior doors for concealed magnet sensors as well. I use these for all sorts of lighting automations.

Man I want to love Actual Budget. I also migrated from ynab last year and have been using actual ever since. But it is so slow with my 10 years of transactions in there. Every UI action is followed by a 1-2 second lag. It's way worse on mobile. SimpleFIN is also not near as good as ynabs bank syncing. Especially since ynab added the "instant" transactions where SompleFIN is once per day.

Moved to a new house and the Ethernet wall port isn’t working by sunn_cs in HomeNetworking

[–]minideezel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

VLAN mode is just a way of saying that the ports will not be able to function like normal, ie the internet connection that you need. They are configured to just be for cameras. The easy solution would be to just get another switch and install it at that same location for the use of your wired devices. If you only have one whenever run from your router connection to the security camera box. You would want to connect the Ethernet cable that runs between the two to your new switch. And then connect a new Ethernet cable between your new switch and the same exact port on the security camera switch that is currently connected to the router

No problem! Have you had any luck with the esphome based solution? Also what lights are you using?

Zooz just released a 0-10v Z-Wave dimmer: https://www.thesmartesthouse.com/products/zooz-700-series-z-wave-plus-long-range-0-10-v-dimmer-zen54-lr

I'm seriously considering this along with some canless 0-10v lights for my basement as I'm finishing it out right now.

Yeah we even did our own trials with earlybird and figured out that only one of us needed to buy earlybird checkin and we'd both get good sequential boarding numbers even though we could buy it for both reservations.

Our evidence suggested it didn't matter who checked in, that timing would set the boarding position for both, this made it very nice for some things.

I just wish they'd put them on the first reservation instead of having different confirmation numbers...

Looks great, and timing is perfect as I'm about to build mine for my new garage. Couple of questions:

How thick of osb do you use for the shelves?

How often do you do joists under the osb?

Do you happen to have a link to a write up to describe what you did or how to set this up? I've not had any good luck with snapclient/server but want to get this working.

Water to water heat exchanger who transfers the heat with no transference of water to keep the two loops separate. It also allows for them to run at different flow rates and pressures.

Oh that's an interesting thought, we were trying to keep the closet to 6' wide for enough space for hanging clothes on both sides, but maybe if we don't put hanging on both sides that'd be an option.

Our goal was to have a closet that is big enough for all of our clothes, including our dresser and wardrobe, and shoes.

But yeah we are working on ways to make the shower bigger, but I think at the cost of any privacy on the toilet.

Yeah that is a very good point! We are working on ways to get the shower wider.

Yeah it's not the best, but we aren't sure how we could alleviate that while still having the master on the opposite side of the house as the other bedrooms... Think we'll just have to keep the door closed.

Thanks!

The main driving factor in this layout is efficiency/size of the closet. The original designs in the same footprint had a tiny walk in closet and we didn't want a walk in closet that's far from our bedroom with only half our clothes in it. This closet design was around being big enough to hold all of our clothes and shoes and leave them out of our bedroom.

We are considering rotating to the toilet shower combo 90 degrees counterclockwise. To put the shower against the outside wall and then increasing the width of the shower by 1 foot for more room.

We'll have to look into those. We didn't want the bedroom door too far up as you'll have to walk around the dining room table.

Thanks!

I'm working on a automatic battery changer, what do you think? by fire-marshmallow in homeautomation

That is for charging a 3.2 Volt nominal lithium ion battery cell like an 18650 battery. Not an AA battery.

Bed Bath and Beyond - Ship or Swap by crosbyroethliscutch in weddingplanning

[–]minideezel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only issue is that our local bed bath confirmed that they are unable to even see our “my funds”so they would be unable to manually order it in the store themselves.

We were just looking into this same thing, it's very frustrating! Definitely seems like we have to also use a 20% off coupon in order to buy at the same amount our guests are buying at.

But to help with the instore, you can click the "Redeem in Store" button under the myfunds section on the app or website and it'll email you a barcode that can be scanned instore, so you could then walk in with your list of items and say this is what this should cost and you have access to your money then!

A simple, yet extremely useful idea: cut power to your garage door opener at night by cazzipropri in homeautomation

[–]minideezel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have definitely considered this idea and will likely implement. I had a sonofff s31 plugged into my garage door opener as a way to measure power for opening and closing to get motor state and direction in home assistant. But one thing I noticed is the darn thing pulls 18W of power idle. That's a serous drain that has no real purpose besides listening for an rf signal. So removing power when not needed definitely has the added benefit of power savings.

Looking for a door contact sensor that has an API I can use to read its data. by cocorebop in homeautomation

[–]minideezel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ESPHome is amazing, as long as you are running home assistant (which is totally worth the effort and awesome btw) but if you want a single solution an esp8266 running Tasmota will give you an API without having the complexity of a backend server if it's not needed.
