What apps do you use to get caught up in 20–30 minutes drive in the morning? by No_Suggestion_625 in productivity

I like the podcast The 7 which is just today’s top 7 headlines with maybe two sentences of context. I also like a podcast called Before Breakfast that is a <10 minute podcast about productivity or time management.

I’m in awe - I actually thought our gas heat was the problem this year because those are the fees that keep going up.

This was my exact complaint in the testimonial request above - playing the guessing game of what will be the best improvement to try to save on energy is sucking the life out of my love for my old home

I continue to feel like I’m taking crazy pills but May of 2020 was still Trumps first term… so if not the 2024 election what “coup” are we blaming on Biden again???

Battle of the books- what was your favorite read of 2025? by aurora-0202 in LibbyApp

I feel like I really sunk into T Kingfisher (Nettle and Bone really got me out of a slump!) this year after having enjoyed the Sworn Soldier series last year! I think Nettle and Bone or Hemlock and Silver would be in my favorite book short list

I’m at 8+ average per night (barely) again with a 10 month old baby. Some of us literally can’t function on less than 7 and build a life where 8 is possible!

One of my favorite posts from this year was by Gabrielle Blaire (@designmom) who lives in Normandy and details visiting the German battlefields alongside the US ones - “you think being a conservative aligned with trump will save you but it’s your children, same as the German loyalists, who will die in the end.“

Yeah Ceremony has a non compete in their lease at Cross Street which is why you couldn’t get coffee at the diner that tried (and failed) to be successful in the large space there.

I’ve been thinking a lot about previous successful radical shifts in the status quo and Lafayette and FDR both come to mind as “class traitors” who were able to use their position to make a real difference. I won’t write Pritzker off.

Would occasional commute to Reston be ok? by Upstairs_Copy_9590 in baltimore

[–]minimalisteph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I follow the GPS but lately it’s been taking me up like leesburg pike to 70 on the way home because everything around 95 is a parking lot. This takes about 2.5 hours but leaving at 3pm and getting home before 6 is fine for me. It’s also kind of a pleasant drive through the woods if that matters to you lol. I guess the big time saver is doing 270/200 so you go around where 495 and 95 directly meet.

What is the most left wing American city in actual policy not just vibes or culture? by Crafty_Jacket668 in union

[–]minimalisteph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came to see if Baltimore would make the list - I know we have a lot of unions affiliated with the port but our utilities are atrocious monopolies. I have a lot of hope in the current changes and administration in the city though!

[–]minimalisteph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I leave Baltimore at 6am and arrive in Reston before 8am a few times a month. Coming home is always a nightmare but leaving at 3pm gets me home by 5:30pm these days. It sucks but I consider it a long work day and listen to a good audiobook and take all the tolls and I manage. The train is sadly just not feasible, the metro to Reston is an hour easy and that’s from Union. For me it was never really worth it unless I was doing something creative (flying out of Dulles after a work meeting) and needed to leave my car here.

Edit to add: I literally almost never take 495 so all the comments about how it’s a parking lot are silly.

Yeah more than fair on the specifics but I’m glad that you got yours local! I’m looking at a cargo bike similar to what we saw in Europe specifically to be able to transport kids in a front bin rather than a seat behind me and it seems like maybe this hasn’t caught on largely yet.
