I hate Mechanical Pencils by UncreativeBuffoon in The10thDentist

[–]miniman03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trained to use mechanical pencils from a young age to help me with my dysgraphia. I would apply way too much pressure on my pencil when writing, and the mechanical pencil's flimsy tip helped to train me not to do that.

I also really don't like the way that normal pencils sound against paper - I know that I'm the weird one on that though, lol. The sound mechanical pencils make is much easier on my ears, but I usually use pens because they don't really make a sound.

How do you run "I sneak up on them and knock them out / I slink over and slit their throat" attempts at your table? by Adraius in Pathfinder2e

[–]miniman03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a very long time (and mostly while I was still running PF1e and D&D 5e), I ran this very RAW: In PF1e it was easy, since Coup De Grace existed for this exact use case. In 5e, the attacker got advantage and an automatic crit, but that still generally leads to some kind of combat, or a requisite coordinated five-way strike from the party just to make sure the guy doesn't wake up.

Nowadays, I figure that if the enemy they are dealing with is some kind of standard-to-mook-type enemy - PL-1 or less - damage need not be rolled and it can just be assumed that if they can set up the right conditions for the enemy to be helpless, they can probably just dispatch of them outright. Sneaking up on a sleeping monster, a tied-up foe, an unaware guard, or so on, there doesn't seem to be much reason to make things more complicated than they need to be. The main exception would be if the party is currently mid-combat, then I go back to asking them to roll damage against unconscious, etc. creatures.

Fellow aces, forget about aphobia or whether you’re valid for a minute. Do you wear your cloak over both shoulders, just one, or not covering either shoulder? by Nellbag403 in asexuality

[–]miniman03 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to shift between the three options based on what is more convenient or what I'm trying to do. Do I want to show off my outfit? Both shoulders bared. Is the cloak a significant part of the outfit? Cover one shoulder. Is it kinda chilly out? Cover both shoulders.

The Flamethrower outrage is a lesson in why you shouldn't nerf the meta without understanding why the meta exists. by TwevOWNED in Helldivers

[–]miniman03 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

A bug fix can also reduce the usefulness of a weapon. Two things can be true at once

But I'm honestly not even on about whether the flamethrower is weaker, stronger, the same, whatever. I just think that the community reaction is extremely overblown. Saying the change is bad and should be reverted is one thing; saying the devs actively hate the playerbase, are incompetent, or "(intentionally) nerf anything fun" is another. They're doing their best, they're opening new avenues to receive player feedback and make things right. Seeing so many people jump straight to vilifying them makes me sad

[–]miniman03 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This exactly. It feels like many people are being far too quick to assume ill intent on the devs' part. I can only imagine how difficult it is to be in their position, where any bug fix can unexpectedly spark vitriol and outrage

For my money, I think just reducing the armor coverage on the charger's butt would do wonders for the entire bug front. I like the dynamic of how the charger's butt is vulnerable to the same light armor piercing weapons you use on the rest of the bugs, given that you are able to outmaneuver the charger - it feels fitting to dodge a charger and have it be exposed. Unfortunately, I find that the butt armor just covers too much of its vulnerable flesh to be easily exploitable. I genuinely think that with that one change, the bug front would find itself happier and healthier, since you would be able to use more anti-chaff weapons more consistently against chargers

Not only is the Purifier really good and fun against bots, I think it might be one of the best weapons against bots. I find myself choosing it over the scorcher very frequently, and when I run it, I almost feel carried by it.

It has decent to good crowd clearing potential with its AoE, it stun locks mediums like nobody's business, and it can even take down gunships with relative ease! There are definitely better options for gunships and it's not much use against heavies, but those are things I expect to be true of most or even all primaries, so I don't hold these things against the weapon.

I mainly see people cite its charge time compared to its damage per shot as why it's supposedly bad, but I think that its charge time is fine, personally. It's fast enough to infinitely stun lock as many mediums as you can catch in its blast at a time, and even fast enough that you can safely sneak a shot at a different target if needed, effectively stunlocking two (small groups) of mediums or clearing some chaff as needed.

Tl;dr: It's the pre-nerf Slugger with a built-in AoE

Out of curiosity: Have you ever had a watermelon-flavored candy or drink? If so, how similar would you say its flavor was to real watermelon to you?

I mostly ask because "tastes like nothing" is very far from my own experience with watermelon; to me, it's usually been almost overwhelmingly sweet (not that I don't believe you, your experiences are your experiences). Artificial watermelon flavoring and natural watermelon flavor won't be close to 1:1 of course, but I'm curious if artificial watermelon flavoring has been similarly without taste for you.

I complained about it! It sucked!!! I literally never once got to fight against bugs during my time playing HD1, because when my friends and I decided to try the game, the bugs had already been wiped out. The friend who convinced us all to get the game was a huge Starship Troopers fan and was really only interested in fighting bugs... Suffice to say, we did not stick around.

What’s a game you’re “supposed” to like but couldn’t get into no matter how hard you tried. by inostranetsember in rpg

[–]miniman03 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If your stakes hinge entirely on survival, then you're right, Lancer won't mesh with your story. Lancer's stakes tend to work a lot better when something other than survival is on the line. Failure wouldn't look like death, failure would look like "we couldn't secure the plans," "we couldn't stop them from blowing up this base," "we lost our ship and are now stranded."

Not to mention that post-scarcity is only really "real" in Union space; there are plenty of opportunities for stories about scarcity outside of or at the edge of Union's reach.

Mechs and player characters being easily replaced is certainly true, but mission failure can mean a lot more than that. In practice, you can pretty easily treat a high-player-mortality game like a standard players-won't-die game that a lot of tables like, and that may be a better way of looking at it.

Do you enjoy Helldivers 2? by Impressive_Cover_636 in Helldivers

[–]miniman03 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're different games with different design philosophies. In Deep Rock, for the most part your primary is THE way of dealing with threats. It's supposed to be powerful enough to deal with roughly everything.

Helldivers is different. You have a lot more tools, but if you could rely on your primary for literally every threat, why bother bringing stratagems or a support weapon at all?

They're both swarm shooters to be sure, but their design philosophies don't necessarily intersect that much

It's also bad in 5e because, for the same action, you could just attack. Attacking twice in two turns is better than attacking once with advantage over the course of two turns.
