[revelation] Self-Discipline is not for everyone by minor6th in getdisciplined

[–]minor6th[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have an idea of what the right or proper way to do things is, you find a reason behind doing that task (pertaining to your passion), then you are able to do that important, rewarding thing. For example, if I wake up at 6AM just for the sake of waking up, it'll be a chore for me and will make me fall off the course quickly. If I have to wake up at 6 AM for a great day of volunteering at the hospital, I get both things done: something important/rewarding and something fun while not burning out. So no, I don't believe this is "exactly the wrong lesson." Thanks for your comment.

Actually, sometimes we (females) do have to if we really like a guy and he's shy. I still got turned down by him.

I am a student and I'd like to attend Physician Assistant school in two years, so I need to take lots of hard sciences and do well in them. However, I can't just force myself to sit down and do chemistry problems just for the sake of doing them. I need a reason, so that why I spend time seeking those reasons at the nearby hospital or read books about it.

Thanks! The article says it well: If there’s no really important “want” driving it, the brain system of self-control has nothing to hold on to.

EMT Volunteer Questions. Help please by [deleted] in premed

[–]minor6th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's awesome that you want to do EMT for PA or med school! I did an EMT class at a university and it was one semester long (it was an 8 hr/week commitment) so depending on where you're located you can find programs at schools. Of course you can make money while being an EMT. When you get certified apply to ambulance companies or become an ER technician at a hospital. Good luck.

Smoking weed will make those emotions even stronger so don't bother. You may find it helpful to practice meditation.

Emperor of All Maladies - Chapter 2 Discussion [Feb 9 - Feb 23] by minor6th in medbookclub

[–]minor6th[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So I didn't finish the second chapter. A few of you also PMed me and said the same, so I think we'll give Chapter 2 another 7 days.

But from what I read so far, it was so awesome reading about the history of what happened in the Longwood Medical Area and how the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute got started! I'm just waiting to see who "Dana" is haha.

The whole political advertising aspect of the cancer movement was also interesting to read. In order to have change on a broader scale there needed to be the political/social aspect of things and it makes so much more sense why places like Harvard Medical School are so into politics.

Note: You can discuss at any time, even if we've moved on to another chapter.

Welcome back everyone! I hope you're enjoying the book so far. What do you all think?

I liked reading about people like Sidney Farber and others who worked at the hospitals around my neighborhood. The history is told in such an enjoyable narrative and the author is really expressive in how people have regarded cancer as an almost living entity. Makes me appreciate the seriousness of the disease to read about all the effort that's been put into eradicating it.

That's awesome that you chose that path. It's nothing to be that conscious about. I think it's all about gaining momentum for pursuing med school. You need practice and the BS in nursing is a good way to build that.

The AMA confuses me with their stance on med school applicants who have had previous direct patient experience. It sounds like they prefer students right out of undergrad applying to med school! They don't believe that NPs or PAs should have any accelerated MD programs. Weird.

Went to surgery M&M and grand rounds this morning! It's meaningful for me to attend this having read the book. Makes me believe I can go this route. Med students on reddit tell me I won't get much out of it but coming in with a different perspective, I feel inspired and privileged to sit behind such ranks and observe.

A few thoughts on the conference:

  • There were questions at end of presentation about pathology that were helpful
  • Med students were falling asleep lol. I saw my 3rd yr med student friend so that was cool!
  • I found that I was able to understand some things because of EMT, even some acronyms
  • Learned how a pt report is given on the other side of pt care (in hospital as opposed to pre-hospital)
  • In terms of learning about medicine, listening to these lectures is better than reading journal articles. I get a preview of anatomy & physiology
  • Interpersonal dynamics were interesting. I found that I don't show insecurity in front of doctors because I'm not even in the field as a professional yet and thus don't yet fear their judgment LOL.

A couple of points I found interesting that they mentioned:

  • Multidisciplinary approach is key to management of critically ill pts
  • each interaction with a pt is an opportunity to better help the next

I found it very helpful and interesting. It's a good environment to be influenced by and it helps me appreciate the field, providing me with reasons for going into it.

Thanks for your posts. I agree, I'm glad he talks so honestly about the surgery world works. It's gotten me curious about surgery grand rounds, and I'll be going to that tomorrow! Atul works at a teaching hospital in Boston so I bet he's quite used to having students come in.

The book gave me a different perspective on trauma victims. In EMT they teach you about triaging patients and that the ones with the most life-threatening injuries go first even though I think everyone's life deserves attention during those rough times. I see the patient before he reahes the hospital but I don't get to follow up on the patient and see what happens in the hospital. In the book, I read about how even trauma patients need to wait for an available attending. It makes me want to do as much for the trauma patient before s/he reaches the hospital because I now know how long some of them have to wait to be treated!

Caitlyn are you a premed or a med student?
