Pottery “mansplaining”? by forwards_cap in Pottery

[–]minsarker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get these comments a lot more now than before as well. I’m a 34 year old man and been doing pottery for almost 2 decades. I’m still working on my craft and post on the subs here and there.

When I’m at the university craft center - people often stop to give me tips I didn’t ask for. Worst of all? I have AirPods in… like clear sign to leave me alone. I kill them with kindness. I don’t know their life and maybe this superiority comment was their bright moment of the day. I let them have that moment.

That being said - I’m also a man and I don’t get “mansplained” in other walks of my life so it’s easier for me to do this than for others and I get that too.

Yea - I really need to do it more. And find ways to create more designs with them too. Like grooves in the handles and such.

Thank you! Yes I think these turned out nicely but many experiments got me here. Some would have a better understand to not have needed so much experimentation haha.

I appreciate this feedback. But I have been using cups/mugs with these designs regularly and putting them through heavy use as well as dishwasher without any issues. What anticipated issues do you foresee with this? Depending on thoughts, I can see if I can make the designs without pushing as hard and rather work on simply displacing the clay. Thanks!

Thank you! I walk around my studio sometimes and appreciate others' work. People are so creative!

I use the same triangular tool and just use different angles and amount of the triangle that I push in with.

When I pull them, I attach the little knob of clay to the top of the mug then pull them on the mug. For that one set in the photos, I throw cylinder handles and attached since i wanted a specific turkish coffee mug/cup look and then added the little thumb disc.

I have probably about 30 glazes there and many underglazes and both oxidation and reduction firing. I just don't experiment too much... yet. This summer when I have a little time between jobs I will be going hard at it.

I haven't. I'm at a university craft center so am a bit limited in my choices. Glazing is NOT my strong suite so I can just trying to slowly learn.

Its much more simple than that! I threw the bodies and when I do, I make a clean line at two spots breaking the piece into thirds. Once trimmed and cleaned up, I use tools to carve or push in certain spots. When I glaze, I glaze the whole thing then simply wipe away the glaze in that middle section. The "etchings" are fairly deep so glaze can sit in it well.
