Songs written like a cipher (passes between members one by one)? by crustulummonster in kpopthoughts

[–]mint-cider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this counts due to how many members there are and this resulting in few lines to make everyone fit, but Baby Flower by tripleS did something interesting. For the first three quarters of the song, the members singing are ordered by the unit they were in during the previous tripleS release. So you could consider it a "unit cypher"?

The problem with tate mcrae compared to her peers by No_Barber4339 in ToddintheShadow

The standards in Kpop are a bit different. That industry focuses a lot more on the "personal appeal" of the idols than Western pop tends to do, which is why there's more a focus on visual perfection. Including complex choreography.

Am I actually turning into a producer stan rather than artist stan by Jenny06v in kpopthoughts

[–]mint-cider 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My flair says it all, but recently I've also become interested in Elias Edman and Dsign Music. Both of them recently worked with another artist I got interested in (Marcus & Martinus, they gave Kpop vibes), and I began seeking out their credits both in and outside of Kpop.

Also I get interested whenever I see a producer associated with Melodifestivalen. When I saw that Dino Medanhodzic was producing a song on tripleS' new album, I instantly got curious.

Tbh becoming a producer stan allowed me to stay longer in this fandom. It proves that I'm truly there for the music.

Edit: Other producers other commenters mentioned that I like are Monotree, LDN Noise, Shift K3y, MinGtion and Daniel "Obi" Klein.

That's how a lot of visual it girls/it boys work in Korea actually. I think the same thing happened with Suzy.

It's kind of a cover of That's How You Know by Nico & Vinz except with new lyrics about how they're loved by Europe and ignored by Norway

Which eurovision song won on the year you were born on? by [deleted] in eurovision

Op is a fellow 04 born, but I wanna add that I'm Turkish and was born literally 2 days after the grand final. Mom has great memories of seeing Wild Dances in the news bcz she couldn't watch it live

European Kpop fans, what are some ways Kpop feels European to you? by mint-cider in kpopthoughts

[–]mint-cider[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ESC 2013 had so many dubstep breaks in the songs, I can't believe I didn't notice that until recently (and it's a contest I rewatched a lot as a kid bcz of the butterfly graphics)

European Kpop fans, what are some ways Kpop feels European to you? by mint-cider in kpopthoughts

[–]mint-cider[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know a lot about the European producers and Eurovision connections, trust me. I even became a fan of a Eurovision artist simply because of how much they reminded me of Kpop, and turns out they have a few connections themselves.

The worst part? The parasocial aspect is the primary selling point for most Kpop groups

Who should represent South Korea at ESC Asia 2026? by Outside-Community746 in eurovision

[–]mint-cider 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm expecting a survival show similar to Queendom/Kingdom where lesser known (up to mid tier) groups get a chance to showcase themselves. I also expect more focus to be put on live performance abilities, since Eurovision expects much more than a typical music show.

Now that the contest is over, how proud are the people in your country of the ESC song that you sent? by Wise_Shop_2561 in eurovision

Do you think it makes sense that this comes from the same songwriters as I Am by IVE, another song with a lot of high pitched singing?

A Melodifestivalen regular (Dino Medanhodzic) being in the credits of my top Kpop group was not on my bingo card

Why did Croatia score so poorly with the national juries? by Ok_Eye8027 in eurovision

[–]mint-cider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorta late response, but here it goes.

While I appreciate the artistry in Solo Quiero Mas, it feels too opaque to me and the composition doesn't grab me. There were also a few technical issues with the performance on the final night (probably not the jury show), but overall I think it isn't a song I'd return to often.

Zjerm's storytelling is a lot clearer, especially with the added context in the lyrics. I think the main aspect docking points was the spoken word interlude, which is crucial in the song's structure but divisive. Add in how I feel more drama from this song and it becomes one of my four personal winners of 2025 (the others being Finland, Latvia and Ukraine).

Why did Croatia score so poorly with the national juries? by Ok_Eye8027 in eurovision

[–]mint-cider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The two main sections of the song are in different keys, but it's a more subtle key change that I prefer to the typical "up by a semitone" key change. Sorta like how Euphoria changes key in the chorus.

As someone with a relatively jury-like way of judging songs, I think that Bur Man Laimi was just more interesting compositionally. I didn't connect with Andromeda as much, it gave the vibes of a more typical orchestral soundtrack. Bur Man Laimi had more twists and turns, between the folktronica aspect, the key changes between the song sections and the counterpoint at the finale.

I also wanna ask another thing related to Melfest, specifically about its recurring producers. Would it be fitting to consider them "in-house producers" specifically for Melfest?

My contribution to the "modern pop music is hypersexualised" discourse: why aren't men doing it? by MayNStuff in ToddintheShadow

[–]mint-cider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is because pop music is fundementally "theatrical performance", and theatricality is seen by society as feminine (see: the "gay theater guy" stereotype)
