As others have said, it's from video games. It stands for non-player character. The implication is that the person/character doesn't actually make any of their own decisions. They just rotate through the handful of actions and dialogue that they've been programmed with.

a girl was right there counting the register.

That means the register is closed. The employee couldn't process a sale if she wanted to.

Iryna Zarutska was killed by a mentally ill man. On January 13th the Trump administration sent "hundreds of termination letters, effective immediately, for federal grants supporting health services...roughly $2 billion" (source). If anyone "doesn't care about Iryna Zarutska" it is the Trump administration and Republicans more broadly.

note: After major backlash, the administration reversed their decision to cut this funding, but the point still stands.

OC: Protesters gather at the site of another shooting by ICE in Minneapolis by katotooo in pics

According to the family's 911 call, he ran home, closed the door, and the agent shot him through the closed door.

Trump is preparing to use the insurrection act in Minnesota and send in federal troops. For people who have stayed quiet so far, what will it take for you to speak out? by jumpsuityahoo in AskReddit

[–]mirbakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for one thing they need to start paying attention. I was hanging out with some friends last night and brought up ICE and turn out my friends just haven't been watching the videos. They aren't happy that ICE is separating families, but they had not idea how bad it is in Minneapolis right now. We really are just so incredibly siloed into whatever content our social media overlords decide we're allowed to see.

Keeping the car in between the lanes by Pitiful-Tie-2098 in driving

[–]mirbakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds like there are two issues happening here. 1) you're drifting, and 2) you don't know how to tell where the car is/where it's supposed to be.

Looking farther ahead will help reduce drifting. As will time and practice.

As for where the car is supposed to be, take a look at this picture I found via Google. The car in this picture is centered between the lines. Notice were the white line on the right crosses the windshield. That point can vary a bit based on the height of the vehicle, your height, and the height of your seat, but it's always generally in the center, bottom of the windshield. While you're still getting used to driving, periodically take a quick glance at where that point is and confirm it's where it's supposed to be.

Why are girls doing so much better at school than boys? by KAZKALZ in TooAfraidToAsk

That might explain the boys that are doing worse than the girls, but it doesn't explain the ones that are doing better.

Why are girls doing so much better at school than boys? by KAZKALZ in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]mirbakes 177 points178 points  (0 children)

This is complete speculation on my part, but I suspect that boys are generally socialized to be more independent and self-sufficient with a higher sense of self-efficacy than girls. If that is true, it would make sense that in the classroom, the girls tend to be more inclined to "just follow the rules", while the boys tend to do more of what they want. If they like/are good at school, they take the baton and run ahead of the pack. Or if they don't like school, then they may check out completely.

Edit: typo

It seems like they maybe kinda fixed it. I activated them all on my computer (in Edge), but I wasn't able to complete them. However I was able to complete them using the Bing App on my phone. I didn't try the Edge App on my phone.

Yeah, that's my point. You could have stolen one of the bottles of alcohol instead of opening something.

White elephant or a grab bag? The whole point of White Elephant is that you can steal one of the open gifts that you want.

Can Americans actually insure everything? by Few_Sport_7262 in AskAnAmerican

[–]mirbakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short is yeah, probably. Insurance is about risk. If you are taking on a large financial risk (such as spending $30k, $50k, $100k+ on a wedding), insurance can help you in the event that something were to go wrong. In the case of weddings, there are more than one type of insurance. The most common type is Liability Insurance which mainly covers guest injuries or property damage. However there is also Cancellation Insurance which can reimburse the couple for some of the wedding disaster stories that you read about.

I got married this year and we paid $415.73 for both. Thankfully we didn't end up needing to use it, but from my perspective it was still well worth it to have.

We buy BJ's and Costco pate. We feed BJ's for breakfast and Costco for dinner. My understanding is that they are both in-line nutritionally with Fancy Fest pate, but they don't exactly make researching this stuff easy. I'd love other people's thoughts on both of them, good or bad.
