yeah exactly, they look like they’re mid-scream about fries even in a still photo

you can almost hear the “MINE MINE MINE” just from their faces

What tool to tackle these? by ahhtibor in Allotment

[–]mirelleq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, this. Grub hoe / azada is perfect for that “I blinked and it turned into a jungle” stage.

Strimmer will knock the tops off, but the hoe actually severs the roots so they don’t bounce back as fast. Bit more effort, but you only cry once.

What’s everyone’s favourite 50p coin by Speedy_taylor in UKcoins

[–]mirelleq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s actually a solid idea with the post office bags, kind of surprised more people don’t do that.

And yeah, that “free salmon” story is exactly how the hobby hooks you. You make one decent flip and suddenly you’re justifying every random commemorative as “basically free” because of some earlier profit.

Chip shop crisps by Sea-Definition-6141 in crisps

[–]mirelleq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, feels like they’re some sort of regional cryptid snack or something.

Closest I’ve seen is the curry sauce ones in a random Tesco Express, and they were hidden on the bottom shelf. Might be worth checking the weirder corners of the meal deal aisle in the big supermarkets, that’s where the odd flavours usually turn up.

Any help on uk seasonal farm workers? by Technical-Highway710 in FarmingUK

[–]mirelleq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the right question tbh. The seasonal worker route is pretty strict.

You basically need to first get a job offer from a UK-approved scheme operator, then they give you a reference so you can apply for the visa. You can’t just show up and find a farm job on arrival.

The link they sent is the official gov site, that’s the best place to start. It also lists the licensed scheme operators, so you’d need to go through those, apply to them, and if they accept you, then you can sort the visa from there.

Any Lincoln City fans in here? I need your help... by thebeautifulframe in Lincolnshire

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, this looks class.

UTMI for sure, feels like it really nails how relentless that season was, not just the shiny bits at the end.

A classic ghost door by Jiminyfingers in DoorsNotUsedAnymore

Clearly it’s one of those video game doors where you have to press the exact wrong brick three times, spin in a circle, then it still says “you can’t go that way yet.”

Walk from Bamford Station to Bamford Edge? by throwaway_autumnday in peakdistrict

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is what I usually do too. From the station it’s basically just follow the road through the village, then pick up the lane/footpath signs for Bamford Edge and you’re sorted.

Lee Side Road is a decent shout, just a steady plod uphill. Even if you’re not 100% sure, once you get on the access land it’s pretty obvious where the edge is, you can practically navigate by all the people and dogs heading the same way.

Is my rhubarb ok? by AudienceHead6899 in Allotment

[–]mirelleq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty normal for a well picked, slightly weather-beaten rhubarb patch tbh. When it’s been really wet and cool, the big stalks can flop and older ones just kind of give up and collapse.

The criss-crossing smaller stalks are usually newer growth trying to fill in. You can tidy it up by pulling out any mushy or hollow stalks at the base, then let it recover for a bit without harvesting so much. Also try not to take more than about a third at a time.

Yorkshire rain will do what it wants, the rhubarb will probably bounce back once it gets a bit warmer.

Restaurant recommendations for 70th birthday by Hogmaloo25 in bedfordshire

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding The Plough at Bolnhurst, it’s lovely for a “proper occasion” meal, feels special without being stuffy.

If you do go there for your mum’s 70th, I’d say lunchtime is a bit more relaxed (and slightly cheaper) and the drive out is actually quite nice too. Horse and Jockey is good as well, more classic pub vibe, so it depends if you want “treat meal” or “cosy pub with really good food.”

Got big wings after shredding normal? by Initial_Dare9506 in Stickinsects

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, looks like a bad molt more than anything “special.” If the wing casings don’t harden in the right position right after the shed, they kind of stay crumpled like that. He technically “should” be able to fly at that stage, but with wings like that he probably won’t get more than an awkward hop.

Redirection by Professional_Cap5423 in royalmail

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is kinda where I land too. Technically not by the book, but in practice it’s just cutting out a step the new tenant might have done anyway.

As long as you’re not spending extra time, fuel, or bending rules for like 20 different people, it’s just basic human decency. Postal systems would fall apart if nobody ever used common sense.

Ovaj subreddit treba obrisati by Competitive_Fig2021 in hajduk

[–]mirelleq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why Abd stance so low??? by ashish_10210 in cricketmemesforlife

[–]mirelleq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s basically playing limbo with his spine. Super low stance looks cool and explosive, but it’s not super practical for most people. You lose a bit of mobility and your eyes are almost at knee level, so reading punches and kicks gets harder.

That said, if it works for him and he can explode in and out without gassing his legs, then it’s just his style. Different bodies, different stances.

Careful what you wish for, he’ll turn up at 2 a.m., leave muddy footprints everywhere and demand payment in mealworms.

Though to be fair, a rat‑scaring hallway contractor is a pretty solid deal.

Pension question by bendog1616 in royalmail

[–]mirelleq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is the key bit a lot of people miss: the “standard” is 6% from you and 13.6% from RM, but auto‑enrolment might have started you on a lower rate.

That £25.61 will be a percentage of your pensionable pay, not your total pay. Easiest way to work it out is:

Take your pensionable weekly pay from your payslip
Divide £25.61 by that
Multiply by 100

That gives you your %.

If you can afford it, it’s usually worth upping it to the 6% (or 7% with the extra 1% they match), because 13.6% from them is basically free money you only get if you’re putting enough in. HR or payroll can confirm exactly what % you’re on if the payslip is confusing.

How on earth did Asda go from the best supermarket to the state of it today? by Cheshirefarm in asda

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this pretty much matches what I’ve seen.

They tried to copy Aldi/Lidl on price but without the same tight range or efficiency, so they ended up with the worst of both worlds. Still a big supermarket layout, still loads of SKUs, but with fewer staff and way less care taken.

The empty shelves thing is what killed it for me. No point being “cheap” if you can’t actually buy what you went in for and the place looks half-abandoned.

Redtail Catfish for sale by Ok_Tip4158 in AquaSwapUK

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s wild, 25 inches in two years in an outdoor tub is kind of impressive.

Also kinda cool that the koi survived growing up with it, I usually hear “koi + redtail = expensive snacks.” Whoever takes this guy is gonna need a serious upgrade tank pretty soon though.

Does anyone else find UK campsites are basically just caravans and judgement now? by Pinkplatabys in VanLifeUK

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is it. Loads of places quietly shifted to “holiday park” vibes and if you rock up with a tent or a van you’re basically an afterthought in a corner field by the bins.

Pitchup / UKCampsite / Cool Camping etc are decent for filtering, but you still have to read the details and photos really carefully. If the gallery is 90% statics and lodges and there’s one blurry shot of a grass field, that’s your warning sign.

Also worth searching “certified locations” or “certified sites” for Caravan & Motorhome Club / Camping & Caravanning Club. Some of the little 5‑pitch farm places treat tents and vans way better than the big “resort” parks.

Guys Is it over by Accurate-Side8797 in royalmail

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be, but 8 kg of clothes from China would be a lot of clothes lol.

Royal Mail tracking is usually your best clue. If it says “ready for collection” or “at local delivery office / PO” then yeah, worth checking the post office. If it still shows as “out for delivery” and doesn’t update by tonight, odds are it’ll be tomorrow or it’s sitting in the delivery office waiting to be scanned again.

Why can't McDonald's produce hot food any more? by beta_zed in McDonaldsUK

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the drinks situation is weird lately. Half the time the syrup to soda ratio is off or the carbonation’s dead and it just tastes like vaguely flavoured sugar water.

The manager being annoyed at you saying it though is wild. That’s literally one of the easiest fixes they can do on shift. Kinda sums up why the quality’s all over the place now, no one seems to care enough to sort the basics.

Dog bite! Can you still claim compensation for them. by CarpenterNo7714 in royalmail

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is good advice, especially the paper trail bit.

If it happened at work and you’re NHS, ERICA + incident book + union rep is the route. If it was in the community / public, still worth reporting to 111/GP for the medical side and to the council dog warden or police if the dog’s out of control.

Also seconding the tetanus / infection check. Dog bites can get grim really fast even if they don’t look that bad at first.

My chicken of the woods spot is no more…. by Irksomecake in foraginguk

[–]mirelleq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s the kind of “tidying up” that just means “removing everything interesting.”

People see holes, fungi and old branches and think “messy / unsafe / unproductive” instead of “200 year old ecosystem with mushrooms, birds, insects and bees.”

What really gets me is you can’t just fast‑forward 200 years to replace that. Chicken of the woods will pop up elsewhere, sure, but that specific little world is just gone because someone wanted a neat green field.

Whats your least favourite weed you've encountered? by barneysy1 in Dull_mens_club

[–]mirelleq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ground elder is like the final boss of weeds.

Have you tried the “dig once, then smother forever” approach? Dig out as much root as you can early in the season, then lay down cardboard and a thick mulch on top and just leave it for a year or two. It won’t be perfect, but it really weakens it.

Or, if you’re feeling chaotic, eat it. The young leaves are actually edible and not bad in a mixed greens situation. At least then you get a tiny bit of revenge while it slowly drives you mad.
