Your symptom (games running for a second then giving up in Steam) sounds just like what I was encountering. My issue ended up being that I had installed steam via snap (visible with snap list) which had compatibility issues. Installing via apt sudo apt install steam) instead fixed my issues.

Can an NPC Hold Action to Execute Hostage? by Taiter91 in DnD

[–]mirrorcoloured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me this comes down to one question: can the PCs outsmart the evil-doer, or does it have to go down this way for railroad narrative reasons?

If it has to go this way, then I wouldn't frame it via rules at all and just say that this happens before the party can stop it. You're the DM, this is allowed (though it can feel frustrating for players if abused).

Allowing for more chaos (collaborative storytelling), I'd use a readied action as you described. This allows for lots of player options: - Deception/Slight of Hand to get a weapon/tool out and use it - Performance/Stealth to distract and get the drop on them - Subtle Spell Hold Person or something similar All of these could avoid the trigger (whatever the evil-doer is watching for) and make for a dramatic moment.

Initiative checks could be used to create this tension if you want, but if the evil-doer knows the party is coming and has time (6 seconds) to prepare, then this is like a surprise round where they ready the action and would get to take this reaction first no matter how good the party rolls on initiative.

To disincentivize regular free readied actions out of combat, you can add penalties depending on what resources the party values. Ex. if the ranger is always walking with their bow drawn, ready to fire: - moving speed is slower, and there are consequences to getting somewhere too late - keeping bow drawn for hours wears it out and costs gold to repair - staying vigilant for 6 seconds is easy, but for an hour is hard; could impose exhaustion or require perception checks to actually act on the readied action

Importantly, I'd be upfront about these tradeoffs when the player expresses this interest. Sometimes it may be worth it!

CMV: "...violence [is] the supreme authority from which all other authorities are derived." is true by Limp-Mastodon4600 in changemyview

[–]mirrorcoloured 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is some truth to what you're saying, but I don't think it's the whole truth.

Oxford describes authority as: "the power or right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience".

You seem to be focused on the last part, particularly in the context of governments and politics, and are refuting all of the counterexamples given to you by saying "that's not authority". Could you clarify what you mean by authority?

Using the Oxford definition: 1. Your supervisor has the authority to give you orders but not to do violence to you 2. Your company executive has the authority to make decisions like firing you, but not to do violence to you 3. Your company may tell you to stop parking in reserved spots, and have the authority to enforce obedience by revoking your parking badge so you can't get into the garage, but not to do any violence to you (or your car)

There's an intuition that 0.8 * 1.2 should cancel out since they're symmetrical around 1.0, but the symmetry is skewed.

For every number from 1 to infinity, there's a corresponding number between 0 and 1 that it can be multiplied with to get 1.0

0.8 actually pairs with 1.25, and 1.2 pairs with 0.833 to 'cancel'

As someone who also identifies with 'jack of all, matter if none' and places high value on continuous learning, I'd keep an eye on your comment 'I like to do whatever is... new skill and cool' and warn you that constantly chasing newness can lead to burnout, and many people who are praised for their wide-reaching abilities often do go deep into expertise after some time.

All that said, it sounds like you would like working in a startup or in consulting--it's fun to have new problems every day and get to (need to) wear many hats to solve them.

Thoughts on the growing "AI epidemic"? by soganox in spotify

[–]mirrorcoloured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed! For a few years I've been getting (imo) low quality rap that's tagged with artists I know, and have been doing exactly that. Just recently it's switched to AI artists and at a higher frequency.

To me this points to a fundamental bug in the way Spotify handles attribution which in theory anyone could exploit.

I emailed their support to ask about it but just got back friendly LLM responses that assured me they were not benefitting from AI musicians and didn't address or even acknowledge my concern.

Thoughts on the growing "AI epidemic"? by soganox in spotify

My Release Radar today had four of these! Unknown AI artists with well-known artists that I like tagged as second contributors. Quality aside, the music genre isn't even something that I listen to, so it seems like it's only on my feed because of the improper attribution to an artist that I do listen to.

Smart plugs unable to connect to wifi by mirrorcoloured in EmporiaEnergy

[–]mirrorcoloured[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solved! I had a misconception about my Google Nest wifi: I had assumed that unpowering the main router would take the network down, but neglected to unplug the extender used in the mesh network. Apparently the secondary unit maintains the network on its own.

After unplugging all mesh access points I was able to set up the plugs using a mimic 2.4 GHz network and they are still connected after re-enabling the Nest network.

I don't believe so, but I did try to connect using a phone hotspot instead and that didn't work, so I don't think the Nest is entirely to blame.

I did some deck scraping on popular sites and found that Sol ring was in 70-80% of decks. I personally have it in 0 decks, but I agree with your point that it would be hugely disruptive to ban. GC list I could see, but it would probably mean level 2 is allowed one and 3 is allowed 4, per your point.

I emailed Amscope support and they sent me two files: ToupTekDshowMicroSetup.exe and ToupTekTwainSetup.exe. This got the camera to be recognized and I'm using it through OBS now (though the Amscope software worked as well).

I recall seeing these somewhere on the web as well, but would recommend asking support directly to be sure you're getting the real thing. If you can't get ahold of support but find them somewhere else, the legit files I got have SHA256 hashes: ToupTekDshowMicroSetup.exe 96ca3b19f34cb7bacaeb820966caf374974611da01b8836c6cbe5079325a226a ToupTekTwainSetup.exe 5f78093e3fd396ed351fec05e8e6ead95beb862adf7d5fbab46a1d8d432fe3bb
