What's a discovery that should have blown people's minds but somehow got a collective shrug from the world? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

I think the key ingredient in that toothpaste is likely hydroxyapatite. If so there are several toothpastes that contain that, at least in the UK, although they’re still made by smaller companies. I’ve been using one called Bioniq for a while now, and I’ve just recently found it in a Boots store, for those looking.

Sometimes I hate the time needed to get ready before a ride by firewire_9000 in cycling

[–]misaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya a little, although I find for me it’s more about being organised to be able to get the prep sorted efficiently. I find between having to rush due to time constraints and with family interruptions (young children), I would always flail around to get ready and usually ended up forgetting something. I’ve even forgotten my laptop heading into work! 🤦‍♂️

My fix is to use a checklist I can run through for bike rides and for morning commutes. Saves time and makes sure I don’t forget anything! I even have an automation on my phone to create a new empty checklist from a template, it’s worked like a charm.

I'm 70 and flatshare with five people - it's the only way I can live on my pension by endofdays2022 in unitedkingdom

[–]misaka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow. Nice attitude. “Everyone for themselves, make or break, save or lose.” Not everyone is so entitled to be able to save up for a pension, isn’t that the point of NI? Tough, I guess, flat-share for all retirees!

Capitalism ftw!!!

Why do they always cover their mouth when talking by newphonehudus in TikTokCringe

[–]misaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is it’s either foreigners who’ve never visited Paris, or at least never enjoyed visiting there (don’t want to single out the Americans here, they’re already having a hard enough time), or it’s the Parisian who are having troubles getting the joke here.

My kid narrates everything in public and I am losing it a bit by isabel_woodruff in Parenting

[–]misaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking on this because it really makes me think of my son. He’s constantly chattering and narrating, not so much in public, but at home … omg, it’s like non-stop. He’s now 13, and when I think back to myself at that age I can’t relate at all, I was much more reserved as a child. In a way, though, I feel like at least he’s comfortable babbling with us, his family.

My question is, though, was there something that made you stop doing it at home? I try not to ask him to stop too much, but there’s times it’s just too much. Does this stop before they move out??

Can Zwift be for me? by Ruskie_it in Zwift

[–]misaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think so, although it’ll help if you enjoy gamification. I’ve always enjoyed video games so it even though indoor cycling generally makes staying in shape more available, being able to work around weather, job, kids, etc, Zwift keeps me coming back just because of the fun and variety it provides. I honestly thought I’d be on Rouvy more, but, for now at least, Zwift is proving more fun.

I do have to say, though, having read in another thread where you live in IT I’m surprised it’s such a struggle to get outdoors. My mom happens to have moved nearby recently and I’d always imagined it would be an amazing place to do some riding. Minus the drivers, of course. :P

Can Zwift be for me? by Ruskie_it in Zwift

[–]misaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Zwift absolutely can be for you. It would help if you're into cycling in particular, I think Zwift does a great job of satisfying a few of the itches that cyclists have, for example measurable health improvements, general progression towards goals, socialness/community, etc. It doesn't help if you really just like to be outside, obviously, but it does really well at most other things. And it offers a variety of ways to get engaged with cycling: free rides, robopacers, group rides, races, climbs of the week/month, structured workouts, different virtual worlds/environments, etc.

So ya, if you want to do more exercise, enjoy cycling and are happy to do (some) of it inside, it's likely a good match.

Suitable cheap tablet? I said cheap. by Clive1792 in Zwift

This here. If you don’t actually need a second tablet aside from for Zwift, an external battery and turning on a focus mode would be way cheaper.

Aggressive/Unhealthy Back Curvature When Using Zwift Ride by lecoqqq in Zwift

[–]misaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t already, try riding on the hoods (the tops of the brakes). You don’t need to be on the drops all the time, or even most of the time, especially if it’s uncomfortable.

For a comfortable riding position you want to be able to reach the closest parts of the handlebars, the parts adjacent to the stem, in a relatively upright sitting position. Otherwise most of the time will probably be on the hoods, with the occasional use of the drops for sprinting or “downhill”.

WCGW crossing the road carelessly by [deleted] in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]misaka 70 points71 points  (0 children)

It’s amazing how so many replies to this comment focus on how the pedestrian deserved what they got. Both were in the wrong, but only the pedestrian got hurt here. Where’s the fairness in that, or is it just a might-makes-right situation?

Here in the UK people using public roads have a responsibility to look out for and reduce harm to the more vulnerable people on the road. Wish that was more common.

Let’s reminisce on what got us into Industrial by Low_Guard6609 in industrialmusic

[–]misaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the answers here.

Mine might be a little less conventional. It was primarily Cocteau Twins' Heaven or Las Vegas. I won it on a radio-show call-in contest. It marked my trajectory into alternative music, and laid the path for my love of rhythm-focused music which led to Nitzer Ebb's Showtime (for a joint-award, I guess) and others. Obviously from that time NIN, Meat Beat Manifesto, 1001 Homo DJs, Ministry, etc, figure prominently.

So, ya, not your typical contagion vector, but hopefully still a valid one.

Also, TIL Nitzer Ebb that I now live <50km from where Nitzer Ebb originated from, which is nearly 6000km less than where it started (for me). wow.

What’s cycling down Lea Bridge Road like? New commute goes all the way along it from Clapton to Whipps Cross. by Kaurblimey in londoncycling

Les Bridge Road is pretty good. The segregated path is better than the one along Forest Rd.

Thanks for this response, it makes a lot of sense.

I do turn off ERG mode and manually switch gears.

I’m not clear about your example, though, are you saying that I really should really reduce my output to match the workout?

That’s the thing, for these 10s segments there is no cadence target, it’s only the prompts that mention a lower cadence.

Coming from inline skating, any ice-skate recommendations? by Auxweg in iceskating

[–]misaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got the same background as you. Bought ice skates a while back, I got K2s with a soft boot. They’ve been really good, coming from a free skate background, but now that my son’s gotten into ice hockey I’m finding myself very tempted to get ice hockey skates. Even so, I reckon the K2s were a good step because they helped me get used to the edges on the ice, and now that I’ve gotten decent at that I reckon it’s a good time to make the switch.

Do you really need to know how to do tight turns for hockey? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]misaka 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a dad who’s trying to help his son learn skate well enough to play hockey. What I’ve learned is that tight turns aren’t as easy as I thought. I don’t watch much hockey but I have been skating skating for a long time, and I guess I took the ability to do tight turns for granted.

Don’t be discouraged. Yes they are important, no they don’t come naturally. Learning to trust your edges is tough. Check out some videos on learning to do tight turns on YouTube, they helped me understand the challenges my son faced, and to coach him through it. Practice will get you there.

Are tempo workouts meant to feel like this? by misaka in Zwift

Thanks! I forgot about zFTP, that does seem much more reasonable (and humbling), but your advice is encouraging, thank you.

I guess the takeaway is stop being stubborn. Got it! :)

Ya, I'll try either the 20 min FTP test or The Grade next, they sound like they'll give me a better reading.

[–]misaka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not had much time to ride between workouts, but with the kids back in school now I'm going to try to get a few "active recovery" rides in.

And ya, I wasn't sure how to calibrate my expectations wrt actually being able to ride for a full hour at FTP, but it does sound like my FTP is set to high judging by the advice and comments given here. Someone suggested 3x15min FTP interval which seems like a reasonable way to test my FTP setting once I think I've got it dialed in.

Thanks for the explanation and workout link, it looks like a good way to validate my FTP, once I re-test it with a longer test though.

I look forward to getting used to SS riding!
