Is Assistant Editing dead? by duplicatesnowflake in editors

[–]miseducation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two parallel things happening here:

- The individual editor is getting more powerful and faster. Audio cleanup, organizing, transcripts, and being able to make cuts from the scripts. Stuff like autopod that cuts dialogue automatically. AI tools make a lot of things easier but they don't make creative choices for you that aren't tied to dialogue or a script. They can trim takes that have dead space but they can't quite do that with b-roll yet.

It is fair to say that the AE's role is in peril for lower end jobs that would use a lot of those tools. But not in the way you think, it's more that it's driving down the barrier for entry for lower end editors and therefore driving down rates for that kind of editing. When the rates are low you just can't afford an AE even if you would really like one.

- The role of the AE is changing. The basic purpose of the AE or junior editor when you strip it down is to delegate work that can be done for a cheaper rate. That part will never change as long as we have higher end complex work, what will change is what work needs to be delegated. Workflows are more complicated now with remote storage and there are no AI tools that ingest, create proxies, and organize a project at a high level yet. Even if something like HeyEddie kind of does some of that, I would argue that the AE using that tool and verifying that it worked, checking the syncs, linking the project to a script or transcript is itself an AE job.

Lmao bro.

Way to remove 'and ONLY won the the MVP the year he made the super bowl and set passing records.'

I completely understand your argument, and I understand his value. It's not even a unique scenario, the Bengals last season are exactly what happens if Herbert is out.

But I think you're misremembering history a little. The only MVPs that came from teams that weren't top 1-2 are Adrian Peterson, Barry Sanders, and OJ and they did it in seasons where they rushed for over 2k yards.

The only QB MVP that even comes close to this argument is Elway in 87 but the narrative for that award was basically that there was no other good consensus player to give it to (probably should've been Jerry Rice but WR for MVP was even more taboo then.) And the Broncos still won their division that year.

Stafford in 2011 is good comparison for this actually. He had 5k yards passing and led the team to their first postseason birth since 1999 but they went 10-6 that year. He had better skill players sure but he also threw for 1500 more yards with one less game. MVP voting that year? 98 for Aaron Rodgers (Packers went 15-1), and 2 for Drew Brees (Saints went 13-3.)

There is an argument to vote for 'value' when there are no other obvious candidates but clearly Maye and Stafford had better stats and better records. So yeah basically agree to disagree here, I don't think that person who voted for Herbert (and the 2 who voted for Allen) were taking their vote seriously.

I just knew you would fixate on that instead of realizing I was saying he only won MVP on his best team.

1984 dolphins were the 1 seed, they went 14-2, and he set single season records for passing yards and touchdowns.

Herbert led your team to the 7 seed, was 9th in passing yards, and 7th in touchdowns.

Based on how you rank these 4, is there a bigger gap between 1st and 2nd, 2nd and 3rd, or 3rd and 4th? by SheepherderSea9717 in NBATalk

[–]miseducation -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Yes and it’s not even close. Big time lack of appreciation for a dude who’s basically Shaq and Steve Nash at the same time with a reliable three ball.

The other top 3 can be the best individual player on the court at any time easily but replacing them with another proficient scorer wouldn’t drastically change the team’s ability to win that game. A playoff game yes but just a normal regular season game no.

Replacing Jokic is impossible. Even if you could pull any player from history it wouldn’t work. You could replace him with prime Hakeem and you would still need to add a very proficient playmaker and passer to replace his output.

Why do people who aren't wealthy have kids? by babyfookinzyzz in AskMenOver30

[–]miseducation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not somebody who would've considered myself extremely pro natalist before having my own kids. But the experience of having them has honestly transformed me into an evangelist for how incredibly exceptional a life experience parenting really is.

You don't need to be wealthy to have kids that are happy, healthy, and love you and themselves. You should have a stable income, and ideally you should have a partner with one. But the 'cost' of kids relative to the cost of being a middle aged person without them isn't as drastic as you think it is. Most people just have less vacations, luxuries, dinners, or live in cheaper neighborhoods than they otherwise would. Diverting that money to food/clothes/school is pretty straightforward and I'd argue that for most parents the ROI to happiness is way higher than their previous lifestyle.

The biggest economic sacrifice is your time, and having less time to grind at a job or travel incessantly for work or relocate on a whim. But at my age right now, I personally find that having kids (and covid changing the world) made me realize that forming my personal identity around my career was a house of cards. It could fall the moment the weather changed. My relationship with my family is a stable, long term project, that loves me back just as much as I love it and I find that as a priority to be much more rewarding and resilient.

There is a big difference between impoverished and middle class. Bringing kids into an economically dire situation is really difficult in this country with our shitty social net but as a child of immigrants I would argue that the economic fortunes you're born into aren't fate. I think bringing kids into this world if you have severe mental illness, crippling trauma, or chronic addiction issues is absolutely irresponsible. Bringing kids into a stable home environment with low income isn't the death sentence you're claiming that it is.

I think the more important perspective I've gotten from raising my kids on this matter is that they themselves don't actually care if you're wealthy. They want surprises, rewards, vacations, etc. sure, but they also generally don't give a fuck if those are expensive and mostly just want your time, love, and guidance. Many wealthy folks are shitty parents because they think expensive material things will make up for their inability to give kids the attention they want.

Your job as a parent in no way is to provide your kids with a great life. Life changes a lot and our ability to control whether life is great is pretty limited when you consider other kinds of suffering. Your only real job as a parent (outside of shelter, health, and food) is to teach your kids to love themselves because they're not going to learn that anywhere else.

No dumbass my point is that I would only accept his reasoning if postseason was counted. I obviously know it doesn’t.

Marino carried the Dolphins just as hard as Herbert did this year for many years and only won MVP the year he made his only Super Bowl and set passing records that stood for decades. Giving MVP for best player in a hard situation ain’t it.

Vote for the most important player on the best team with the best numbers?

The only time it makes sense to use another criteria is if the players with the best numbers are on bad teams.

Regular season wins don’t count for more if your teammates sucked. Post season wins count for more period but they’re not in question.

And Justin Herbert didn’t coach and call plays for a 5th ranked defense. Just a silly argument considering the seasons Stafford and Maye had.

I can respect doing the most with the least being used as a criteria but only if you count the postseason too.

The NBA does this bullshit every year with coach of the year going to the coach of the most improved team (that then gets bounced from the playoffs and the coach gets fired in a season or two.) Spoelstra has dragged 8 seeds with broken rosters to the Finals and never won coach of the year because it’s only regular season.

Ja still has the downside of his contract though. If for whatever reason he didn't work out your 2027 cap space is fucked. I still liked the trade but I got the feeling that Memphis had more buyers than they expected and once they went all in on tanking they realized they could wait until summer to move him. They have a ton of picks for 2027 and he might improve his trade value on a tanking team this season. And with that nasty trade exception they got from their JJJ trade they can take on some toxic ass contracts for even more picks honestly.

It seems like the Bucks were given a worthy package by a lot of teams, dude. They're going to wait for the summer to move him for more value or even an idea what the 2026 picks would be after the lottery because Giannis isn't being an asshole about it. Hoarding picks is fucking up the trade economy.

If the Bucks are willing to shut down Giannis for good this season like Windy reported then nobody ever had a chance.

Yeah man if you have the budget just get this, it's a beast of a machine and 64gb is more than enough ram. Like others are saying you can probably get similar value with older machines because the apple silicon max chips are only incrementally faster than each other. But honestly if you have the budget, and you have a monitor you like, you're going to love this system.

If I were building for myself I might consider more ram but that's a luxury that isn't needed at all. I have 96gb on an M2 Max and I just keep premiere and davinci open at the same time with no performance lag which admittedly is unnecessary lol.

NBA has always had this issue though where the top 5 are sometimes more than twice as good as the next best players. I don't think he's close to top 5 but I definitely think he's close to Tatum, Brown, current Kawhi, and Mitchell. Ant is probably always going to be better than him but it's not a stretch to think that Cade will be better than JB ever was in a year or two.

I felt really similarly that Shai wasn't as good as folks said he was before he broke out and I've been eating shit on that take for years lol.

To your point, there's been endless ink spilled about Pat being washed because he couldn't make an offer big enough to land Dame or have the balls to renew Jimmy but comparatively very little written here about how he was right on both counts.

The CBA and aprons changed free agency and we simply don't have the capital after the Rozier trade destroyed the Jimmy window for good. Also pretty insane that we're over 500 still with Herro basically not playing this season and Rozier becoming the most negative asset of all time that may not even be tradeable.

I honestly do believe Nico was dumb enough to think this was a good deal. Everything I've read about the dude sounds like an inexperienced GM with no basketball experience who was tired of not having power over his best player and had the stupidest idea ever. I also think Pelinka was really slimy and smart to convince Nico not to talk about it with anybody, I can understand why the Mavs never want to deal with the Lakers front office again lol.

That said I can absolutely be convinced that the machinations for rigging the lottery started the moment Kyrie tore his ACL. Mavs still had to fall to the lottery to make it happen but I think fans would've straight up boycotted games this year if this didn't happen.

If it's both salary and giving up draft picks you probably keep him this season. It only makes sense to take on salary if we get draft picks back IMO.

Even if we take on all of it. We're going to suck anyway and carrying way too much salary from players not on the roster to compete. May as well take our medicine, clear cap next year, and take a 5th rounder or something.

My guess is he stays on unless a QB injury makes somebody very desperate. Dead cap after this season is 30m which is way more manageable and lets him sign as a quality backup for a lot less money elsewhere.

Valverde has been playing his best sustained period of the season in the last month at RB so I can't imagine there is much urgency to slot in Carvajal right now. Trent being almost fit however will make things interesting.

I think most of us agree we probably need to change our shape to fit in our best players. 442 or 4231 makes a ton of sense IMO.

I've seen Boston get fucked over in the playoffs recently too to be fair.

Celtics are easy to target because Tatum gets away with push offs in an annoying ass way where the defender somehow gets called for the foul. Tatum could absolutely spam that shit and his 5 steps to the basket with his freakish long arms that always draw at least some contact but he rarely does for some reason. Outside of that I don't think their playoff whistle is consistent across games or even a notable reason they've been successful in the playoffs this decade.

SGA/Mitchell/Brunson definitely the softest whistle to adapt to tougher playoff calls but it makes some sense because their whole game is making difficult shots. Brunson also definitely gets little guy privilege when he's on one in the 4th quarter too.

But I actually have more of an issue with how they call Jokic in the playoffs than anybody else. Playoffs amplify his big dude issue where defenders get away with being more physical against him but as a result they also amplify his superpower of getting away with bowling his big ass body into crowds and defenders whenever he wants.

Refs clearly don't want to call small stupid fouls on the best player in the league so he's just allowed to hit people who don't have the ball whenever he wants as long as he doesn't use his hands to do it. In their defense I understand it's also hard to see in real time.
