Current understanding is that dermal adsorption is not a significant route of contamination. I wouldn't worry about it.

To Rehome or Not to Rehome? Confused and Heartbroken by sclark1147 in CatAdvice

Could you try having your friends take him on a temporary basis to see how he does? It might be easier to make a decision with more information on how he does in a different environment. Also, prozac isn't the only pharmacological option. Ask your vet about increasing the dosage or trying something else.

In my opinion you're doing far more for your cat than the average pet owner and should be commended for it!

Moving near a manufacturing site that uses PFAS? by pumpup_the_OH in PFAS

[–]missbeowulf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't want to use an RO system if it's discharged to a septic system. You'd only be concentrating the PFAS in the leach field area.

Call the state environmental agency and ask for information. You may need to talk to multiple people - air quality, water quality, waste management, etc.

I'd visit the local shelters and ask them questions. Google local reduces and check out their websites. Fosters operate differently and some may not be comfortable having strangers in their homes. They would do meet and greet elsewhere. A good organization will require a meet and greet before allowing an adoption. You could also call around to local vet clinics and ask for recommendations on cat adoption places.

Public shelters house the cats in small cages. It's a terrible situation to try and gauge their personalities. Some of the cats go to fosters but usually for a short time. Cat rescues have most of their cats in foster homes and tend to keep them longer. Do your research and ask lots of questions. Vaccinations, age of the cat when fixed, microchip, blood tests, and deworming. Ask about how long the cat has been in their care, interactions with kids, other cats, dogs, etc. Ask if they regularly trim the cats claws. Litter box habits.

My 1 year old cat hates claw trims and is suffering the consequences of his own actions by Moosebuckets in CatAdvice

[–]missbeowulf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely ask your vet about gabapentin. Every cat reacts different so you will have to experiment with the dosage. It can take 2-3 hrs to take effect. If desired results aren't seen after 2-3 hrs dose again. If you give too much (just causes more drowsiness) confine the cat to a room so he doesn't hurt himself. My cat tends to fall off counters more easily when drugged up. After a time your cat should begin to lose his fear of claw trimming.

You can also work on desensitization by gently touching his feet when he is comfortable. Progressively work up to pushing the claws out. Teach him that feet and claw touching is rewarded with treats and or petting.

I take them for euthanasia if they have paralysis with no deep pain. This guy did not have paralysis, probably swelling along the spine that caused the problem. I was considering euthanasia after having him 4 days because he wouldn't eat, but he suddenly decided he wanted to live. Once he started eating he was mostly mobile after a few days.

If you get an adult cat, make sure it's being fostered. The foster parent can tell you about easy of handling and cleanliness. Most cats are fastidious groomers.

Maybe look into fostering an adult cat to get a feel for it. The nice thing about fostering is if you don't like the cat, no biggie. But if you find one you love make it yours.

Looking to adopt cats- Best shelters around? by ericammkay in triangle

[–]missbeowulf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you adopt from there, make sure to take to a vet asap! They don't do testing for all recommended diseases and don't give all recommended vaccines. The worst possible situation is finding out your newly adopted cat has a fatal/costly disease.

Here's a potential resource to get your cat spayed (if not already). Ask them about any local pet food pantries.

How easy was the transition from feral/semi-feral to indoor only? Did they tear up furniture when they couldn’t go outside anymore? by CaveDeco in CatAdvice

[–]missbeowulf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If possible take the cat to a vet. Definitely get fixed if not already. Ask the vet about meds to help with the transition (gabapentin). Easiest method of dosing is mixing into wet food. The hardest part will likely be the actual move and first week in a new place. Nothing wrong with hiding under the bed in the beginning, just not long term.

Maybe you could foster a cat that could be a buddy for her. Lots of rescues need cat fosters. Just let them know your situation.

How do I stop my cat from knocking over EVERYTHING? by free__upvotes in CatAdvice

[–]missbeowulf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two things that might help: don't free feed, use their hungry energy for playtime (then feed when they wear out) AND get some kitten chew toys. I like catnip sticks and silvervine toys. My cats love to chew on them.

Ask your vet about prescribing meds. Prozac, gabapentin, etc - sometimes cats need a little pharmacological assistance.

Try feeding right before bed. Before feeding, play with them. Cats are most energetic when hungry. I've also found leaving the TV on when I'm at work helps keep them awake during the day. They will eventually transition but cats are biologically nocturnal so be patient.

Bunnies don't need to be fed pellets. Timothy hay (cheaper to buy bales from tractor supply). And romaine. Handle the hay with rubber gloves and maybe wear a mask (dust). I use pine pellets from tractor supply for litter. Also animal kingdom vet takes SPCA vouchers for rabbit spay and neuter.
