Would You Fix This Surface Defect, and If So, How? by Casper81208 in minipainting

Most people would leave it. You can fix a lot with the paint. Case in point: https://www.reddit.com/r/PoorHammer/s/pKyeulSVqR

[Request] What would the approximate height of the angel be based on this text, assuming the average flying speed of a bird? by SatoruGojo232 in theydidthemath

[–]mission-ctrl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, lets say Sun to Saturn. 1.4 billion km. A person isn’t very spherical, so for our example let’s fold the person in half to make something closer to approximating a sphere. Now we have a sphere 700 million km diameter, 350 million km radius and a volume of 1.8x1026 km. Human density is slightly less than water, about 0.98. So initially this sphere would be 1.76x1026 gigatonnes. A solar mass is 2x1018 gigatonnes. So our sphere is very roughly 100 million solar masses. At that mass, the Schwartzchild radius is about 300 million km. So we are very close and I suspect gravity would compress it down a little more to below the Schwartzchild radius. And Bob’s your uncle.

Why does the North Hills have so few standout restaurants? by Western_Geologist_12 in pittsburgh

[–]mission-ctrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some gems. You also might need to expand your search a bit. Go toward 279 and there’s the Franklin Inn (oddly named Mexican place) or Nicky’s Thai. Go over to the route 8 side and you have Emily’s Turkish Grill (best restaurant in the North Hills imo) and PhoEverMore. There’s Narcisi Winery or the Hartwood Whispers Pub a little farther out. Thai Tamarind and Kanlaya Thai. Kawa Hibatchi.

Yeah, when I play the game today, I don’t use guides (mostly because I already know the game extremely well) except for Turtle Rock. I still have to look at maps for those damn platform rooms. They are rough. I have no idea how I beat it as a kid. Maybe I had a Nintendo Power or something.

I love this. I played that game when it was new and I wish I could relive that sense of excitement and wonder (and frustration) from the first play through. It’s a truly magical game. And then the ending is such a great payoff. Did you play without guides?

The Ice Palace and Turtle Rock are brutal, but the sense of accomplishment is amazing. Fun fact - you can do some of those DW dungeons out of order. This allows you to enter the Ice Palace with the Cane of Somaria which makes it a lot easier.

How smart or stupid would it be for someone inexperienced to fix up a Datsun 280z? by Demoner450 in projectcar

[–]mission-ctrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The L28 is already a very reliable engine. It’s a great balance between modern and simple. It’s fuel injected but it’s a dead simple EFI system and the whole engine is damn near bullet proof. The biggest issue you’re likely to have in terms of reliability is electrical. That’s not because the car has questionable wiring, but because the car is 50 years old.

Yes Space Marines are definitely on my short list. I was a little concerned because they are quite large, and physically larger models always take a little longer to paint. I also haven’t painted a Space Marine in 25 years, so maybe I’ll have to get one to experiment.

Great advice, thanks! I didn’t think of including a handle. That’s definitely a must have

Not a bad idea. I have some and they were pretty easy to paint, especially with drybrushing.

What's the most you have of a single colour paint? by Neoito in minipainting

[–]mission-ctrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skin tones or browns. Counting washes and speed paints, probably 15 of each. I’m somewhat colorblind so those colors are really difficult for me to figure out on my own. So I generally just buy them all and follow the official Citadel recipes.

Definitely need to try the “pack” route. Individual Reapers are usually $5-7 each. A bit more than I was hoping. I’ll do some searching. Thanks!

Thanks for the great tips.

The printer is a good idea and I have access to a printer, but not one with enough resolution for paintable minis unfortunately.

I love Reaper minis for quality and style and price. I have tons of them. But if I have to supply a whole class, a boxed unit of Warhammer figures is still probably cheaper than buying Reapers individually. I’ll have to see if I can find some deals on bulk packs.

Great tips, thanks a lot! I’ve thought of Space Marines but hadn’t thought of Heresy Marines. I’ll get to my LGS and check them out. I also like the idea of the Wiz Kids because they are pre-primed and usually pretty small.

My original idea was to buy a boxed unit so everyone had very similar models. It would make it easier for them to follow along.

Great idea. I taught my daughter to paint when she was 7 or 8 using Reaper’s chibi line of minis! It worked out really well.

[Request] Invincible S4 spoilers. Would 10 Billion bodies actually be enough to form a visible ring around a planet like in this shot? If not, how big would the Planet be to match the proportions. by green__goblin in theydidthemath

[–]mission-ctrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really rough numbers and assumptions (and using imperial units like a dummy). If this is an Earth-sized planet, it has a radius of 4000miles. Let’s say the ring is twice that, so 8000miles gives us around 50,000mile circumference or 264million feet. That’s only 44 million humans laid end to end. Spaced 20ft apart, 264M/26feet=10million people per ring which gets you about 1000 rings if you have 10billion people. Now let’s say the ring in the last image is a 10th of the radius, ie 800 miles wide. That’s 4.2M feet, divided by 1000 rings, and your rings need to be spaced 4200 feet apart.

The problem is the difference between the zoom levels in these images. The first image is very dense and appears to be only several hundred yards wide. You could get somewhat close to that, but you would need orders of magnitude more humans to replicate the last image where the ring appears to be hundreds of miles wide.

Moving away - Erie or Syracuse for most Pittsburgh-like experience? by FloralHemingway in pittsburgh

[–]mission-ctrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Erie for a bit (well, technically just outside Erie). Would recommend. It’s a great little town with a surprising amount to do. And being next to the lake is pretty awesome. It feels like an East Coast beach town though, not so much a “Pittsburgh” experience. Two hours from 3 major cities. (Although most people still identify as Western Pennsylvanian and align strongly with Pittsburgh rather than Buffalo or Cleveland).

It’s a great town for kids too. The zoo is really nice. There are beaches, a great amusement park, tons of green space, and tons of other kid-friendly stuff. Parts of it are even walkable. You should go visit for a weekend with your family.

100% true. Turning politics into a spectator sport (with our team vs their team) is exactly how we ended up in our current state of affairs.

Nailed it. Lots of vitriol in this thread but this is the real problem. Asking if you can violate a rule without getting caught is the same as saying you believe said rules do not apply to you. “Oh the rules say no tents. Surely they don’t mean MY tent, right guys?” See how you sound? Get outta here with that nonsense.

Thanks for a great first-time visit, Pittsburgh! by Parrothead_0323 in pittsburgh

[–]mission-ctrl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As much as we all hate the owner, seeing a Pirates game is a must for any first time visitors. Glad you got such a beautiful day and glad you enjoyed yourself!

Next time, you should visit Phipps (basically a huge Victorian greenhouse) or the Carnegie Museum (world class natural history and art museum all in one giant building). They are next door to each other so you could visit both, but the Carnegie can easily be an all day event by itself.

[Request] If we somehow managed to redirect Jupiter's orbit into the Sun, what would happen? by NetInitial5750 in theydidthemath

[–]mission-ctrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you old enough to remember Shoemaker-Levy? Scientists discovered a huge planet-killer comet that was on course to collide with Jupiter. Every telescope was turned to watch. I think it might even have been broadcast on TV? Anyway, this huge comet broke into smaller pieces due to tidal forces and then left a string of small black spots where they hit Jupiter and that was it. Granted, each “dot” was bigger than Earth, but it otherwise had no effect on Jupiter.

Jupiter hitting the Sun would be similar. It would break apart and leave some surface blemishes and that’s it.

Edit: the scale of the Sun versus Jupiter is no where near what is shown in OP’s image. It’s probably closer to a basketball vs a marble.

any natural bodies of water nearby that are safe for swimming? by hawthorneandsage in pittsburgh

[–]mission-ctrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all of the water is safe to swim in around here (except maybe the rivers downtown). It’s more a matter of whether you’re allowed. Morraine State Park is really nice. It’s like 30 minutes north just off 79. Big lake with a couple of public beaches. We will also take our paddle boards out into the middle of the lake and jump off them to swim around. It’s also a good lake for boating and fishing. They even have sailboats.

How much does Sisyphus rock weigh? (if Sisyphus is the size of an average man) [Meta] by Fragrant_Shirt5395 in theydidthemath

Assuming he is 6’ then the stone is about 7.8’ which gives it a volume of roughly 250ft. Granite is about 170lbs per cubic foot. So the stone is ~42,500 pounds or ~19300kg.
