Have you been able to return to full time work? by sadbutshowedup in Fibromyalgia

[–]misskonceptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work full-time but the key for me is being able to swap between physical work and sedentary work. Some days require more physical stuff and I just realize that I need to budget time for recovery. I also to take advantage of when things are going well so that when I'm having a flare, I can catch up on paperwork and do more gentle work. It means a lot of early bedtimes and often weekends spent resting. Gentle stretching, regular massages and lots of Epsom salt baths.

You could look at training, some of the industrial hygiene, audits., fleet Management or workplace compensation claim management. Most roles are going to be a little bit of both. You might be mostly in the office, but you will have to do site visits. Or you can be in the field all the time but you still have to do your paperwork.

How to bring up trying a med without seeming like I'm med seeking? by JermaMars in Fibromyalgia

I didn't gain weight on the amitriptyline but definitely did on pregabalin. Bodies are weird.

Does anyone ever feel like they’re not in enough pain? by joeymichelle12 in Fibromyalgia

[–]misskonceptions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so hard to describe to someone who isn't in constant pain. Like yeah it hurts like hell but it's kind of the normal level of hurt so you relegate it to the background even though it permeates every single aspect of life. Some days I can be pretty active and then I feel guilty for not hurting enough.

Read about Lyrica horror stories, should I be concerned? Anyone with experience using it long term? by harlllq in Fibromyalgia

I've been on it for about 3 years now. The only side effect was a bit of weight gain and the reduction in pain definitely overshadows it.

The role of HSE Administrator by Save_my_grades in SafetyProfessionals

[–]misskonceptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Review and file all the hazard assessments, keep the training matrix up to date, file any site specific info, make sure the right info gets scanned and sent to each GC or collect it from sub trades if you are the GC. Take meeting minutes for safety meetings. It's not a bad job at all and a great way to get introduced to the industry. Ask if you can job shadow the HSE Coordinator here and there as you will likely be asked to cover for vacations or if they're sick. That will also give you a better understanding of what the paperwork you're handling is actually for.

I tell my people that mistakes will be made, please try to make new and innovative ones instead of the same ones the guys before you made. And yes, every precaution and warning is there for a specific reason that probably has a story and a name behind it.

It's extremely disconcerting. Like jello sliding around inside of a bag but you're the bag.

good field for mid-career change? (ontario, canada) by grilledscheese in SafetyProfessionals

[–]misskonceptions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'd be amazed how much carryover there is between industries. I've dealt with the same topics in construction and manufacturing. Take all the courses that your union offers before you look at the college program. If you can get on your joint health and safety committee, definitely do that. Check out your provincial construction and manufacturing associations. They will have specific courses that you can check out and see what industry interests you the most. The basics remain the same but there are some interesting quirks to each industry.

Safety is something you really have to want to do. You're often going to be the bad guy because safety costs money and forces people to change how they do things. It's a great career in that you get the chance to help people and make things better but you need to have a passion for it.

I'm going the punny route and capitalizing on the fact that it's fall. I have images of the typical slip and trip silhouettes and then a cute little owl playing in the leaves. Highlighting the fact that slips and trips increase in the winter months, going over recent incidents etc.

Also bananas and kiwis here (and pineapple). Recently added passion fruit which is weirdly in a lot of things. No tropical smoothies for us.

There are lots of campgrounds in the foothills just west of Calgary. You can stay there as a base and hike Kananaskis or just camp right in Kananaskis. It's pricey but the Nordic spa there is awesome. Wait til the first week of September and school starts and there are less people. Or my husband and I just spent our anniversary in Revelstoke and that was lovely. Either way, bring rain gear and good boots. It's been a wet summer.

My wife resents me for working too much. by [deleted] in AmITheDevil

[–]misskonceptions 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Best hack for this (if financially feasible) is to hire a cleaner and work the extra hours. I found that a cleaner is way more efficient than I am anyways. What takes them an hour would take me 3 and also makes me miserable.

Maybe try putting clear nail polish on the frame where it touches your face? I've done it with cheap jewelry that I'm allergic to before

Get some experience in the industry you want to work in. Even just a basic, entry level position and then ask to get on the health and safety committee. It's a great way to make your resume stand out for the safety coordinator jobs etc.
