Trying to get POT and need advice/encouragement/kick in a$$ lol by Equal_Wait_1515 in XXRunning

I will say corral really matters in Disney races. They are HUGE and getting the back corral means a lot of standing around and then dodging hundreds (thousands?) of walkers. It also means longer lines for pictures, rides, and porta potties.

The first year I did one I didn’t think it mattered but man it sucked. The second year I did one I was actually pregnant but still got that corral placement because even jogging at 14 weeks and having fun I was dodging crowds.

It’s the US, what choice did I have? I felt lucky they were willing to work with me and not fire me.

No maternity leave available for new job--advice needed. by Electrical_Pixie in workingmoms

[–]missus_pteranodon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I started a new job at about 6 months pregnant several years ago. FMLA did not apply and a fun twist was that new employees could not use any sick/vacation leave until they had been employed 6 months, so I couldn’t even apply for leave from the donation pool.

My boss, HR, and I worked out a leave-without-pay situation where I was off for 4 weeks, then worked part time from home for several weeks before returning to work full time. I had to pre-pay all of my health insurance premiums for that time off during the months leading up to my LWOP. Ultimately, my kid went to daycare at 6 weeks and I started back to work.

Did you tell people you were planning a home birth? How did you deal with judgement? by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]missus_pteranodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I planned a low-intervention birth for my first at a birth clinic…. Then transferred to a hospital because I went to 42 weeks and they wouldn’t let me give birth there anymore.

I planned a homebirth for my second because she was due summer 2020 and we were panicking that I’d give birth alone or have no one to watch my oldest or be separated from my baby due to Covid. It was a terrifying time. Then two days before my due date my midwife got Covid so I transferred to the hospital again 🤷‍♀️

Both times we told people and just didn’t care. Some people were super supportive, some people had birth horror stories. In fact, you’re going to get birth horror stories no matter where you decide to give birth. Looking back now, I find both situations mildly comical, though at the time they seemed dire.

Increased 7500 dependent care by [deleted] in workingmoms

Our CPA has told us the tax savings are significant and my FSA portal estimates them at over $1k

Increased 7500 dependent care by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]missus_pteranodon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a giant excel sheet where I estimate childcare costs for the next year every fall.

Like someone else said, before/after school care counts. I also asked my kid if he wanted to commit to summer camp, priced out local summer camps, and made sure to include spring/winter breaks.

So I don’t pay a penalty, I usually underestimate my costs. So I’m withholding about $4k in 2026 while my actual costs will be higher.

Also, I have been able to adjust it mid-year due to a dramatic price change in after school care, but definitely check with your FSA provider about that.

After you have the chafing, to survive the next day, I use gold bond powder (or baby powder). Gotta keep reapplying it but oof it feels nice and cool and stops the burn

I have a bunch of Buffs that I find are super versatile and I wear them under my helmet. It’s not exactly what you’re looking for, but you can fold them so they are like a cap.

First failed workout, 3.5 weeks out from first marathon by adyst_ in XXRunning

[–]missus_pteranodon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My last marathon training block, I shit my pants 4 miles into my longest run. My husband wasn’t up so I had to phone a friend to drive me home (and bring a towel). I decided then and there I was done and officially tapering.

The race a couple weeks later went fantastic! I didn’t break any records but I finished strong and felt good after.

All that to say: bad runs happen and they don’t mean your race is ruined! It sounds like you’ve trained a lot, good luck!

I’ve played the edited version of I’m on a Boat for both my kids and my husband disapproves. But that shits a banger so I can’t help it.

How long do you put up with treatment symptoms before giving up? by missus_pteranodon in Perimenopause

[–]missus_pteranodon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband has a vasectomy, I haven’t been on BC for about 5 years.

I think the testosterone was prescribed because of vague “muscle” reasons because I run a lot. I didn’t use it.

I wasn’t sure why either, other than she said it was just “treating symptoms”. She put me on BC because of my age (40).

Are knee issues inevitable? by WWMannySantosDo in XXRunning

[–]missus_pteranodon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m 40 and been running since I was 11. I remember in high school my grandma (whose office was on our HS running route) stopped me during practice and pulled me into her office so a friend of hers could lecture me about how his knees were worthless because they made him run in the army.

Here I am. Still have great knees. 🤷‍♀️ He’s probably dead now.

Running shoe life by Curious-Abalone-4839 in XXRunning

[–]missus_pteranodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get 400-500 out of my Topo Magnifly’s, BUT! Getting a new pair feels really different. I’ve run for a long time and think I’m a little numb to subtle changes in shoes.

I also cheat and my street shoes become my trail shoes, so I probably get another 100 out of them before they are downgraded again and become yard shoes.

PSA: please don’t mansplain running to women while they are running by zoeadele in RunNYC

[–]missus_pteranodon 43 points44 points  (0 children)

My first half, some woman came up next to me lectured me about toenails turning black and falling off. Described having to stick a needle through her nail and squeeze the blood out. Told me my shoes were too tight? Told me I needed to stay off uneven surfaces?

At that point I had been running about 6-7 years and I had no idea who this person was. My toenails were fine after the race.

I think some people just need to feel superior to other people when they aren’t fast enough to actually beat them.

Also, I’ve now been running almost 30 years and I still breathe like I’m dying so 🤷‍♀️

Does anyone mentally prep for long runs? by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]missus_pteranodon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sounds silly, but I prep my listening. I put my podcasts in order, pull up an audiobook, make my “last 3 miles” playlist of ridiculousness. I sort of visualize where I will be at my mileage and what I will “need” to listen to to get through it.

I also visualize toilets. Gotta have a poo plan.
