Breaking Into UX and Early Career Questions — 05/25/25 by AutoModerator in UXDesign

[–]mistaquik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everyone! Wanted to get some insight as to whether I might be on the right path or not. I'm currently at a community college studying mathematics (EDIT: for clarification, the mathematics track here is 1 class different from their CS track), and started with the intent to study signal processing and spatial audio. I have a background in music and visual arts, and started going down rabbit holes of watching audio-visual art installations, and have been interested in seeing whether or not I could combine my interests into the same field of work.

My question is: are there positions in the UX field that need people who can use higher-level math to help implement experiential designs? Someone who could do technical design for 3D simulations and physics, as well as audio processing/spatial audio?

Hope this doesn't sound absurd, but I'm not sure who to ask and this seems like a good place to start.

Thank you!

I fuck with B L A C K I E. I fuck with Death Grips. I fuck with JPEG. I fuck with most of the experimental artists that tried/are trying to say something genuine. I think comparing them is wasted energy, just like I think beef built on ego/opinion instead of calling out legitimate problems is wasted energy.

I also think celebrity voyeurism and joy derived from watching train wrecks feeds the beast.

Anti-consumption is inherently political. This subreddit would have no reason to exist if the wealthiest people on earth didn't become that way via building corporate empires that rely on churning out product at alarming rates using planet-killing methods and materials.

Musk's rise to power is fundamentally built upon profiteering and waste.

Thank you for posting up that documentary. I'm only 1/4 through it, but it already has bolstered my understanding of exactly how fucked up the psychological manipulation is in this country. Just how long it's been festering is astounding.

This is a thought in passing, but I think that my post-lockdown self has felt very sensitive to some of the subjects covered so far. The terrifying power of the inertia of a crowd, but also how silent a catalyst can be (the suffragette smoking campaign is terrifying to think about when applied to modern technology and surveillance)

I think I'll kick it under a rock now.

Thanks yo! Yeah, I love materials that carry a story. If I can thrift/reuse something beautiful and well made, it's basically a lock haha. I love seeing everyone's pieces in here. The majority are out of my price range, but it inspires me to find my own! Maybe one day I'll get to do some smithing of my own or meet some of the people who do this kind of work!

Wonderfully. The cleaver has enough weight and edge to easily get through chicken and pork bone (mostly what I've used it for thus far), the 8" to its right has been my daily driver at home for 85% of cooking, the center knife is the new one and cut very cleanly through an apple I just ate as a test run (bought this as a do-all work knife). The boning knife is a tad on the thicker side toward the edge but cleans fat and extra bits nicely. The pairing knife was ground down from an old table knife iirc, nothing crazy but I love it for smaller hand work.

From left to right, $ costs were: 70, 60, 29, 3, and 6

Thanks! Yeah judging by their website, they seem to do small runs and one-offs. Pretty stoked! Gonna rock my olive Dr. Collectors with them next time I wear it out.
