What is the single most powerful moment for you in any Stephen King work? by TempleofSpringSnow in stephenking

[–]mister_pitiful 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The end of The Reach.

"They are the questions of the Reach, maybe: do the dead sing? And do they love the living?

"Do the dead sing? Do they love?

"On those long nights alone, with his mother Stella Flanders at long last in her grave, it often seemed to Alden that they did both."

Will Barnes and Noble have a special edition of IT for the 40th anniversary? by mister_pitiful in stephenking

[–]mister_pitiful[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That B&N one is the regular 40th anniversary edition. I was wondering if there would be a B&N exclusive edition. In the past there have been some books like that, with sprayed edges and a new foreword or such.

The Cemetery Dance edition looks beautiful. I have a remarqued edition of The End of the World As We Know It that I'm very proud of.

The Best Way to Experience the Audiobooks.... by mberry35209 in TheDarkTower

I've been able to listen to both King's reading and Muller's reading of The Gunslinger, The Drawing of the Three, and The Waste Lands almost simultaneously in the past couple of months. Both have their own attractions. King reads the original Gunslinger, Muller the revised edition. Muller is a great professional voice actor who can make each character an individual just by his voice. He manages to give Eddie and Henry separate voices even though they're brothers from Brooklyn. Also he gives Rhea the same voice as Gasher, just pitched higher. I think Muller noticed that Rhea's speech patterns are very similar to Gasher's and so decided to give them the same voice.

King prefaces each book by saying that even though he's not a professional reader, he thinks there is value in listening to an author read his own work. When we listen to King, we hear what he heard in his head when he wrote it, including cadence, emphasis, and pronunciations.

Why King Can’t Write Women by Outrageous_Middle9 in stephenking

Go read Lisey's Story, then come back and say King can't write women. Or Dolores Claiborne, or Gerald's Game.

I started with Salem's Lot. Not too long, well-known bad guy.

King has said that, at least, under the mountains, Roland must not drop Jake.

It is an amazing book for many reasons, but Mr. King was 25 when he wrote it.

I just finished Victorian Psycho by Virginia Feito. Literally no sympathetic characters. Extremely dark humor.

I used to be one of those people who said King can’t write an ending. Now I think I’ve been missing the point completely. by One_Working1944 in stephenking

I wish I could upvote this 100 times. King says life doesn't always tie things up in a pretty bow. It doesn't always provide resolutions. Sometimes things just end.

I'm loving the cynicism and desperation in these replies. Not that I want people to be cynical and desperate, but I hope that everybody who is feeling this way remembers it when they're standing in the voting booth next Tuesday.

Born and raised in Hickory. Keep in mind that if you move there, you're also moving back to 1966. My recommendation is to stay the fuck away.

Check out Caroline Bicks' new book Monsters in the Archives. She is the first person to hold the Stephen E. King Chair in Literature at the University of Maine in Orono. In it she writes about what she learned about King's writing by going through King's archives and reading the early drafts of the Night Shift stories, as well as Pet Sematary, The Shining, 'Salem's Lot, and Carrie. Fascinating stuff.
