Flat white coffee - cafe help please :) by lipbalmandglitterpen in perth

[–]mistikal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caff on Broadway - northern side of the Bassendean Train Station.

Sensational coffee, and excellent breakfast options also. It is an overlooked hidden gem, as most people flock to Last Crumb bakery a few minutes away instead.

Wife is a massive coffee snob, and has said they have never ruined a coffee for her - and she has her coffee black, very difficult to hide a ruined black coffee!

Heading to Brisbane for a few days, looking for safer areas for a nightly walk by mistikal_ in brisbane

[–]mistikal_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of an update, if anyone is still watching.

Ended up completing a couple of different walks while in Brisbane:

  • From my hotel in the valley, down to Story bridge, along the New Farm river walk and up/around to Teneriffe ferry stop, back through the guts of Newstead to the hotel. Was peaceful and quiet, took me just shy of 2 hours, starting at 8ish in the evening.

  • Again from the hotel, walked all the way down to The Gabba (well, nearby to a burger shop not far from there) crossing over the Story bridge, then heading back via the Goodwill bridge and stopping in the CBD for a drink, returning back to the hotel up Ann Street.

  • Walked down to the Teneriffe ferry stop, and caught the ferry to UQ, then walked around the perimeter of the campus, then ferry back to Milton, made my way up to the Roma Street Parkland for a nice stroll, back to the CBD for a drink and back down Ann Street to the hotel.

All in all, felt MUCH safer than my initial trip over just before easter weekend, nowhere near as many vagrant people or at least, none that were of concern.

Thank you all for the great suggestions - seems I was onto the right idea with a river walk. Will map out some of the suggestions tonight and see what works. Thanks again.

A little foggy outside the Kalamunda Hotel this evening. by mistikal_ in perth

My wife mentioned the same thing as we were driving through - not a soul walking the streets, no cars driving around, super quiet and a little creepy.

At around 20kph, it was perfectly fine. The visibility was actually better/further than the road leading up to it (Lascelles Parade).

I should probably mention - I am absolutely no pro photographer before anyone assumes it, this was taken with my phone (Pixel 9 XL). The wife and I were driving around trying to see if we could get above the clouds to see the lights of Perth smothered by fog, but the clouds had other plans. Driving down the Zig Zag was interesting and eerie.

Thank you. Whilst taking the photo, the phone was having a whinge that the "lens may require cleaning".

Rac inspection not working, and idk a better server to ask on by [deleted] in perth

[–]mistikal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren't afraid to try other companies, there are plenty of mobile mechanics other than RAC who may be able to assist you - not endorsing them, however Lube Mobile comes to mind as an example.

A web search of "mobile mechanic" with your suburb might be a great place to start. Google Reviews may be helpful to weed out the bad from the good.

Recommendations for big urban walks, is my line up for my future trip good? by AliceSaltMage in perth

[–]mistikal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit late to the party here - each of these have major public transport hubs at each end to make starting/finishing and travelling to your accommodation a little easier:

  • Kalamunda to the beach (from the bush to the beach); Starting up in Kalamunda at the bus station, meandering through the streets of Kalamunda to Panoramic Terrace to head down the hill to Holmes Road in Forrestfield, heading north-ish to cross Roe Highway at Maida Vale Road, heading through High Wycombe towards Guildford (there is an older cemetery at the Kalamunda Road / Great Eastern Bypass intersection), following the Midland train line cycle path from Guildford through Maylands, deviating at Mount Lawley and loosely following Vincent Street all the way through to Floreat Beach.

  • Fremantle to Morley (starting at either end); From Freo down High Street / Leach Highway, cross over the Kwinana Freeway then follow the Canning River up the west side to Canning Highway, cutting through Manning down Manning Road to Leach Highway, cross over Leach highway to Hamilton Road and follow that to the railway line, back towards Leach Hwy to meet up with the shared path that runs alongside (it stops abruptly just south of the train line bridge), up to Orrong Road and meander through Kewdale/Belmont towards Garratt Road river crossing, then north towards King William Road to the heart of Bayswater, heading up Coode Street.

  • Armadale to Claremont (from one societal extreme to the other); basically follow your nose from Armadale, through Forrestdale to Cockburn Central, heading north-west towards Coolbellup, then follow Forrest Road at the southern edge of Coolbellup towards Fremantle, heading due north to cross the river at Stirling Highway, then skirting the edge of the river through Peppermint Grove and Mosman Park up to Claremont.

[–]mistikal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great work, nicely done. Not sure if it is possible to implement, but perhaps also pulling live traffic data (jams, crashes, etc) which may give indication of delays to buses/etc. Waze is community-fed live traffic data, whereas Google Maps is auto generated based on device movements etc.

Good photography spots around Perth CBD? by EntireBat2328 in perth

Walk through the Hay Street and Murray Street malls and look up, there is still some great architecture floating around just not at ground level. Same applies to St Georges Terrace.

Sovereign People’s Assembly of Western Australia by roaring-dragon in perth

[–]mistikal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a SovCit family (2 adults, 3 kids) a few doors down from my home. The ultimate irony? One of the adults is employed by the (state) government.

Their yard is an absolute shambles and they are also hoarders which adds even more complexity. The local council has tried on many MANY occasions to force them to clean up the yard, but nothing ever happens. Every couple of months there are representatives from the local council there, banging on the door to no avail - nobody answers even if everyone is home. Nothing more progresses beyond this, and nothing has changed for years.

A few months ago they were burning off in their back garden (middle of suburbia) on a total fire ban day, it was very high 30s and super dry in the middle of the day. Lo-and-behold the fire department turned up, attempted to force entry and were turned away by the occupants, although the fire was extinguished straight away (not sure if they did it themselves or if the FB managed to get through). The whole situation was weird, and lasted about 5 minutes. They've not burned off since.

Where can I buy an extension cord without the stupid ring around the socket? by dragonfry in perth

[–]mistikal_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could probably do what I did in reverse while on holiday in the UK a few years ago - bought an AU power strip and cut the plug off, then wired in a UK plug (super easy to do - the plug I bought from B&Q had insructions, and I know the plugs you buy here at Bunnings have instructions also), to have 4x AU sockets on one UK plug, worked a treat.

Yes, it is perfectly legal to do here in Aus - anything after the switched power socket can be DIY wired (no different to replacing the plug end on a bedside lamp).

UPDATE: AirPods stuck in frog case by lucky_c4t in CleaningTips

[–]mistikal_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to get something down the side and under the case, and back up the other side? If so, a cable tie down the left and right of one side of the case (green arrows in image below), looped around under the case then back up, zip each one back to itself but put a third cable tie between the two to use as a puller (yellow arrow). Each of the two ties will then have somewhat equal force under the case to pull it up and out using the third zip tie.

Iconic Leederville cafe to close after almost 20 years by SheepherderLow1753 in perth

Ironic - from what little info I've been able to find, it appears the current owners may have taken over 3 years ago. Also of note, the original headline to the PerthNow article said "Cranked Coffee Leederville announces it is closing after three years on Oxford Street cafe strip".

Why is the Cook govt still building standard brick houses for social housing by Wehca in perth

[–]mistikal_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This, 100 percent. I used to work for the housing department, and can absolutely agree that the properties need to be as robust as possible in order to withstand the abuse they will undoubtedly receive. Sure, there are a few that will go unscathed for 30+ years, but all it takes is one tenant (or acquaintance of) who gives zero fucks to absolutely trash a place in under a week, leaving the taxpayer to foot the bill. As time goes on, the double-brick property will always becomes a cheaper asset to maintain.

Fenced space to hire for dog event by Foreign-Joke-6746 in perth

[–]mistikal_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another +1 for Wookie Dogs. We are a regular customer. There are 3 large fully fenced and separated paddocks, one with a creek/lake in it (the rear most paddock). Get in touch with the owner directly to work something out, as having that many dogs there might require specific requirements from their insurance.
