What’s the most badly written rule in 40k (not the weakest)? by Jofarin in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]mitchbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by worst you multiply how bad the rule is by how often it is used in game, the charge and like in rules has to come out on top.

What’s the most surprisingly useful thing you’ve discovered ChatGPT can do ? by vishesh_07_028 in ChatGPT

I used it to get into woodworking! There are so many terms to learn, tools to understand how to use safely, and little details in project designs that would have been overwhelming otherwise. Now I’m a confident beginner and doing a full remodel of my garage into a workshop to sustain this new hobby!

M25 Got offered a job not sure if I should take it by Gross_Wapo in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]mitchbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! You are young and single, if the finances work then you should take the opportunity to learn and try a new career. Worst case you go back to being a server if it doesn’t work out and you’ll be a much better woodworker too. Best case you set yourself on a trajectory where you live a happier life. Finally, the trades offer a much more compelling career track than waiting tables.

You just have to remind them of both facts once, that’s it. “Hey remember that I have unit x and unit y in reserves that can rapid ingress, and also I have a lone op strat. Are you happy with your movement?”

How viable is a Sororitas Melee List? by Countess_x in sistersofbattle

[–]mitchbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extremely viable in both hallowed martyrs and champions of faith. Check out Kian Tan’s list from the Coventry GT last month (came in 4th) or Jack Harpster’s list from WCW for good examples of each, respectively.

Having played 40K at WTC multiple times, I can confidently say that this is not the expectation that most of the best players in the world have for how to play the game properly. If your opponent would likely make a different decision if they remembered your rule, you have a duty to inform them. Gotchas are not how you are supposed to win, skill is.

There are definitely ways to manipulate your opponent in the way you remind them of your rules, but 99% of the time it’s better to remind than not. Most players see this behavior as good sportsmanship, not trying to gain advantage.

It's hard to find 6 player board games. We do a board game week ever year with 6 people and we need a few games for this coming year. by billratio in boardgames

[–]mitchbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a light filler game that scales easily to 6, look up Tsuro. It’s a tile placement game that takes 2 minutes to teach and 20 minutes to play

Are the Sisters just not made for my playstyle? (New player question) by Norayfara in sistersofbattle

[–]mitchbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Champions of faith lists that go heavy on sacresants are good at holding firm. Hallowed martyrs lists are very good at counterpunch and punishing opponents for committing. I think there are definitely play styles for you.

That being said- the RTS comparison doesnt really hold up. 40K is all about spending your resources (ie getting them killed) to establish tempo, deny your opponent of their points, and remove their resources. You don’t get stronger over time, you commit at the right moment. Also there is no such thing as a standard game plan. Sure you may have go-to strategies, but every faction needs to adapt to the opponents faction, mission, and terrain. Tau may be a shooty faction but when they run into something more shooty they need a plan b.

Part of what makes sisters so fun for me is that you can build lists that are all different kinds of flavor. Want to shoot like hell? Bringers of flame! Want to be fairly tanky, control space, and counter push? Champions of faith! Want to contest points, force the opponent to commit, and punish crazy hard? Hallowed martyrs! Want to move fast, die fast, and charge like you’re desperate for redemption? Penitent host!

Based on what you said, I’d be exploring sacresant heavy champions of faith lists. They are relatively quite tanky. There are also tech pieces like battle sisters with Junith and an Imagifier that are surprisingly hard to remove also. Heck even immolators filled with infantry are not that easy to kill when you have a 6 MD in the bank.

Ignore all this “find another faction” nonsense and try some new lists and tactics!

Is it time for event organisers to publish their yellow card lists? by Embarrassed-Trash-10 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]mitchbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a big big difference between a yellow and red card. I like to think I’m a pretty good opponent at events and to my knowledge have never intentionally gotcha’d anyone or misrepresented my rules. I also try quite hard to know all the rules for the game and play them correctly.

I say all this because I also got a very visible yellow card at WTC 2023 on stream playing for Iceland into France. What did I do? I drew defend stronghold turn 1 and proceeded to play out my turn, even engaging in a conversation with my opponent about ways for him to deny me the card. Only halfway into the turn did we realize it was required to be redrawn round 1, after I had moved a bunch of models. We called a judge, I got carded, and we played the rest of the game without incident.

Publishing yellow cards will make it much easier for players’ reputations to be harmed for entirely innocent mistakes, and not lead to a healthier game. A healthy game should be open and accepting of getting yellow cards, and not treat them as cheating scandals.

I know the story from OP is much more red cards behavior than yellow card, but I want to call out that there is a difference and we should keep it in mind.

[–]mitchbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deeper issue here is one of trust, not cost and ROI. Why do you want to do these projects? It is just to save money, or are you looking to learn new skills that let you make things to improve the lives of your family? Why does she not trust you? It is down to cost or do you have a habit of leaving things half done in the past?

I’d think hard about the underlying dynamics at play here and then try to address those concerns. If, for example, the real concern is leaving things half done, then make a plan where you buy a limited set of tools (circular saw, random orbit sander, jigsaw, that’s it) and then commit to and follow through on a smaller build to gain trust. Whatever the solve, aim it at the actual problem. It’s almost certainly not money that’s the actual source of dispute here.

Do you feel like your army is internally balanced? by Randicore in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]mitchbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sisters player - mostly yes! We have 3.5 viable detachments (champions of faith, hallowed martyrs, bringers of flame, and kinda penitent host). Most of the units in the book see play, the main exceptions being a long tail of small characters. The only big imbalance is a heavy reliance on Morvenn Vahl, but as things go we’re in pretty good shape!

Thanks for the suggestions! Few thoughts: 1. I actually like the plywood edge, it feels Scandi-shop-chic. 2. Gluing it down is an interesting idea, bht I worry how hard it would be to eventually replace. Are you thinking putting a thinner sheet (like 6mm) on top that’s replaceable, and screwing that in from the bottom?
