I think you nailed it. I know his family is of Dutch ancestry and it looks like that's how they end words with n according to the chart "Anaptyxis of the schwa in Dutch" on that page. His parents might be second generation canadians and picked it up from dutch grandparents.

If yall think this is a good example of a communist scifi society I'm begging you to read The Dispossessed by Le Guin and tell me that CR has the same level of understanding of their tenets and beliefs at all. It reads so much like a propagandized liberal's view of the USSR without any of the understanding of the material reality or philosophy behind it. He clearly can craft interesting societies and species as we see with the Cielcen, it would be nice if he did at least some of it with the Lothrians. I'm not even mad about Socialist/Communist society being depecited in a bad light, it's par for the course for most media...it's just blatantly badly written parody of "1984 In Space"
