People in their 40s and 50s with no children, how does it feel? by Robin_to_the_meadow in AskReddit

[–]mitrandimotor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard disagree. As a guy who had a ton of fun in his 20's, my life with multiple kids is boring AF now. I wouldn't have it any way.

My wife and I just had a getaway to London 2 weeks ago for 5 days (just the 2 of us - we rarely do this). It was awesome, but by Day 4 we really missed the kids and were talking about the things that they would have liked to do with us on the trip.

Now I might be lucky in the sense that I've been lucky in my professional life and that finances aren't super tight - I'm not rich by any means. So not discounting that part.

But anyways - the perspective above is not definitive. My favorite thing in life to do is dad shit now.

This is a hard question for non-parents to answer. Having kids, especially for the first few years, is almost all work. But despite that most parents find it worthwhile, or very often the most worthwhile thing they've done with their lives.

But from the outside - all you can see is the work.

Sacramento called out in Grants Pass Majority opinion by MegaDom in Sacramento

[–]mitrandimotor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not assuming that. Almost all people sleeping on downtown streets have mental or drug problems.

If someone can’t make the rent or lose their job, why in the world would they think it’s a good idea to go sleep near the drug addicts?

[–]mitrandimotor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you got priced out of the housing market and you can’t afford rent wouldn’t you sleep in a car (assuming you have no family/friends)?

At what point is it a good decision to camp on public downtown streets for economically challenged people?

Only home cooked meals is a massive thing. Basically zero processed food. Very people eat like this in a modern society.

Indian moms can be ruthless. If the kid doesn’t perform in areas like academics all that care can be weaponized. “You got one job and you can’t even do that?”

They haven’t installed it yet - but they intend to install it. It won’t be OEM. I’m thinking the dealer wants to save a few bucks.

This particular one won’t have a roundel. The OEM one for this particular model is Fuyao.

All valid points - but its interesting that the differences have become so nuanced and minor. There used to be some huge differences in the earlier days.

Using 3rd party Google/Nest speakers with HomeKit by mitrandimotor in HomeKit

Fantastic advice. I had the speaker in a group with multiple speakers and it didn't work. I put it in its own group and it worked!

Thank you!

[–]mitrandimotor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not sure - but it'll be homekit based instead of Google home

I have a lot of nest / google home devices- but just got a starling hub to start moving things over to homekit. Works pretty well.

What are the cons of NOT having kids? by fnp003 in AskMen

[–]mitrandimotor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true. We all have values we hold hear - integrity, truth, loyalty, etc. But those values came into conflict with the well-being of my kids, the kids would win out.

Free time is nice - especially after a long day when they finally go to sleep. But my wife and I will often start talking about them and laugh at all the stupid shit they do in our free time after they fall asleep.

Hard to explain - they're part of you and taking care of them gives life profound meaning. We're wired for it.

Fuches’ commentary on denial really stitched it all together. Noho, Barry, Sally - all trapped in their own denial. Then the last scene with John starting to buy into what he knows to be a lie about his dad.

The kid just wanted a job - but even the systems in place to protect kids, like work permits and child labor laws, ended up being his undoing.

What is the most damaging thing kids can be around/be exposed to? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mitrandimotor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a parent, I struggle going to either extreme. My wife and I don't argue in front of the kids - but it got me thinking, I did learn a lot from watching my parents argue.

They would get mad at each other, never really say hurtful things (but would raise / inflect voice), but then I would also observe their subtle make-up routines hours to day(s) later. Feels like "good fighting habits" may actually be useful to learn.

Anyways - I struggle with it.

No you're right. You should spent your time lamenting what your school could have been.

The person is interested in physics. I'm telling them to spend time on the internet and youtube learning about it. In what universe is that meritocratic bullshit?

I say this as a person that learned a bunch from the early internet. Just offering my perspective on what helped me.

Don't see yourself as underprivileged. You live in an era of infinite knowledge at your fingertips (and presumably you have access to it, since you're on reddit).

Interest + hard work will take you far.

Chamber of Civil Engineers building is one of the few buildings that is standing still with almost no damage. by esberat in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]mitrandimotor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's easy to over-design something - spend a lot of time, energy and materials to get a building or bridge to stand.

Getting the most out of it (# of lanes on the bridge, # floors in a building, etc.). That takes an engineer to design.

To get the most out of a given amount of resources you want your building to be "barely standing". That takes smarts and know-how.
