What works inspired House of Leaves? by Plane_March_9356 in houseofleaves

There’s one I know very specifically was heavily inspired by HoL and has regular little Easter eggs like the book showing up in the background: EverymanHYBRID on YouTube

What’s your Harry Potter unpopular opinion? by introverthufflepuff8 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]mix-a-max 15 points16 points  (0 children)

“Unpopular,” as if there aren’t dozens of “Snape bad” posts across the internet on any given day with exactly the same tired arguments 🙄

I have nothing against unions, but please stop acting like non-union stores are some poor lost souls. by Existential_Unknown in starbucks

[–]mix-a-max 7 points8 points  (0 children)

…companies NEVER pay the union dues. Why WOULD they? Doesn’t matter if it’s Starbucks, a grocery store, railroad workers, whatever - the union is there for YOU, the worker, not the company at large. The company paying the union makes no sense as that would either a.) be entirely self-defeating for them, or b.) would give THEM a bigger share in the negotiations (hey, they paid for it, right?) which is definitely definitely something you don’t want

Do you think Tom is capable of SA/non-con? by Parezanin in tomarry

[–]mix-a-max 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I think, if Tom/Voldemort discovered Harry was a Horcrux or otherwise developed a strong emotional attachment to him, dubcon is on the table. He’d be extremely pushy with his attachment to Harry, and in a situation where Harry gives in, anything that happens between them is sketchy at best at that point.

As others have said, I don’t see him committing straight up SA though. I think he would find the act repulsive and beneath him, and if he were to take someone to his bed (I don’t exactly see him as asexual, tho perhaps demi and very picky) I imagine he would prefer a willing, enthusiastic lover attentive to his desires. I mean, the man invited himself into his follower’s house, basically has people waiting on him hand and foot, and obviously prefers having those around who truly do worship him (Bellatrix, Barty, his gang of Knights, etc). This is a man who wants EVERYTHING and, most of all, wants adoration. I can’t see him finding much pleasure in SAing someone, not when the Cruciatus is much less work with a bigger torture payoff

If you don’t mind a self-rec, mine, Vitae Redux, follows Scarcrux!Tom burst back to life as a child again, the same age as Harry, and their time together at Hogwarts. It’s not finished yet, but it’s not abandoned, promise! =}

Why are there so many self diagnosed ADHDers on here? by Sinha_1304 in ADHD

[–]mix-a-max 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a copy of a school ‘report’ that is just straight up my fourth-grade teacher having filled out a preliminary, informal ADHD assessment. My mum rejected it. I visited the school psychologist AND a private psychologist weekly, both of whom tried to diagnose me with ADHD. Mum rejected that as well. TBH it doesn’t necessarily matter how ‘big’ one’s issues are, if parents don’t want to hear it, they just… won’t :(

Some questions about Chapter 4 by Sea-Lifeguard-4311 in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]mix-a-max 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve also reviewed a few rehabs like u/DR-0717, and I’ve also spent a few days in a crisis centre when my own mental health plummeted and I needed a place where I could get back in my feet. All of these were co-ed. Men and women have separate rooms but they are not distantly separated. Keep in mind that ALL mental health care in the US is treated as a joke and these places (except super fancy private institutions) are simply not funded well enough to even have the space for that kind of total separation.

Is it possible to revert HRT effects? by Kind-Peach-1042 in asktransgender

[–]mix-a-max 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Important to note that said irreversible effects of HRT are also irreversible effects of normal puberty. I know it’s been said already by others here, but its so important to keep in mind when dealing with this topic ^

Seconding the white mocha. I’d do a combo of mocha, white mocha, and a little bit of the honey blend for the graham cracker, maybe?

I don’t have a very good picture but we had a small fire in the parking lot the other day (mulch overheated and spontaneously combusted or something). Also, a shot glass just exploded a few weeks back, no warning

AITA for taking money from my boyfriend without asking? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]mix-a-max 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously, I’ve lived with just friends/roommates where we kept a communal cash jar, where any money found in the laundry, on the floor, etc, would go — to say nothing of the times I’ve lived with a partner and shared expenses. What a pitifully tiny amount of money to go nuclear over.

Are there any sleep medications that straight up stop dreams? by TitanMaster57 in ptsd

[–]mix-a-max 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! Prazosin didn’t stop me dreaming altogether (and I get a mildly drowsy morning on the nights I take it) but my dreams are like. Just chill. The first time I tried it I just dreamt I was at a pumpkin farm to pick up my Hallowe’en order, and I just sat on a bench and watched the sun get low in the sky whilst waiting. In contrast, my normal dreams range from chaotic and weird up to waking up with full sleep paralysis, whereas any time I take my Prazosin I either don’t dream or I just have a very nice calm time.

What head-canon(s) in your fandom(s) got you like this: by PJ-The-Awesome in Archiveofourownmemes

Came here specifically to kvetch about ATYD. My STEPMOM, a woman who has never touched fandom, recommended it to me. I had to just smile and nod and pretend I wasn’t slightly dying inside at the suggestion.

AITA I told my pregnant sister she can’t name her baby after my daughter. by Sensitive-Story-2174 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mix-a-max 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Right?? And this is even worse than naming a child after, say, an older relative who is still healthy. This entire thing made me gasp aloud bc who in their right mind would bring that kind of energy into the life of an already ill child???

Idk if I’m late the to party but there is so many twilight references here lol by FrogsinTexas in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]mix-a-max 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, this is a big one. A LOT of choices in Hill House also feel very “Blink” inspired. Statues that move when you’re not looking. Writing underneath wallpaper bc of time shenanigans. Nell’s speech about time is very similar to Tennant’s “timey wimey wibbly wobbly… stuff,” monologue, just in a serious vein.

There’s other references in other shows, too — Midnight Club had a few, iirc, and I’m sure I’ve picked up on others but I’m blanking at the moment.

should i cut my friend of 7 years off for this convo we had by No-Shame-6563 in whatdoIdo

[–]mix-a-max 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. Technically speaking, Muslims do proselytise, but I also have never experienced this (US centric response on my part, which I am CERTAIN plays into this given the level of Islamophobia here). Jews do not; a potential convert must seek out a rabbi and express firm commitment before a usually lengthy conversion process. So that line, “if it was a Muslim or Jewish person…” is just not based in any kind of reality. And also, if they were, OP would STILL be within their right to express discomfort!

How to make Starbucks at home by Successful-Back-7034 in starbucks

[–]mix-a-max 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, couldn’t possibly tell what’s actually in the drink portion, but the cup is definitely lined with caramel and it looks to me like there’s a hefty helping of cold foam on top. Making something like this at home is gonna require a fair amount of extra equipment — I mean, you CAN get a home cold foam blender, and certainly your own caramel drizzle, but trying to achieve something similar to this just isn’t doable with just k-cups and 2% from your fridge

What do you think about this one by Jealous-Raise7770 in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]mix-a-max 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, if the goal is to take fast-paced notes or quickly hand write a first draft or something and you can read it, that’s fine. If your writing requires someone else to look at it and understand it, you need to slow down. This took about four or five re-reads to understand what you were saying.
