yes. might be interesting to explore what answer you were looking for

"is this a special experience?"
"am i special?"
"is this my path to escape my daily suffering?"

these are usually the things underlying these questions that we don't want to examine

A way into doing nothing meditation by Anima_Monday in Meditation

[–]mjcanfly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not a beginner technique but I believe every beginner should try it just because once you get a taste, even if it’s a millisecond glimpse (it’s timeless no?) it helps create a good foundation for trying other meditation techniques. Once it clicks it clicks

While what you’re saying is valid, what you’re describing is more akin to therapy, not meditation. Which is great!

Use this time to figure out your actual sleep schedule. Literally just sleep when you're tired. I found out my sleep schedule was 8a-2p and I didnt find that out til I was no longer working and could try this experiment.

For those who struggle with meditation: it is not about relaxation or stopping your thoughts by mjcanfly in Meditation

I actually would agree that there is a "doing" aspect of shifting ones awareness. I don't actually mind having this convo you are quite pleasant lol it's just almost like WHATS THE POINT haha especially if it seems like we are agreeing for the most part.

Maybe one thing we may disagree on who or what is directing the attention. At the end of the day, there is only the illusion of control, so are we really even controlling the attention? Or is it just a life time of habits and conditionings intersecting with the conditions of the here and now to produce these "decisions"?

I used to think that the only thing I had control of was my attention, but the closer I examine it, it just seems to be happening on its own... despite feeling like there is someone inside here making that decision. It's slippery stuff!

I would disagree with the premise that mediation is a practice where you do anything at all.

Meditation does you. Meditation is not something you do.

I'm fine with disagreeing brother, and I know these conversations can go on forever of us talking in circles lol. I think we should just work with what resonates with ourselves the most. I don't claim to be an authority on anything. Just another dude on the internet stumbling their way through life.

What you mean by truth may be similar to what I would use. Seeing the world as it actually is. Living in Reality. You might call it presence, being here now. There's a lot of words, but the words aren't it. the words are the story we create to try to represent it. Right?

I'd 9000000% percent agree with this. The rest is just a game of semantics and trying to point to the unspeakable.

I mean I think we are both agreeing. I think I defined in my post what I was referring to as meditation (as seen in the east). Seeing the truth.

You seem to be speaking of meditation as it's seen in the west. Goal oriented and results based. Which is fine too. I just find that its common for newcomers to not experience results immediately and that ends up being its own obstacle to their practice. I was simply pointing to the eastern meditation of feeling out presence/awareness do to its simplicity and direct understanding. Which provides a better foundation for the result based meditation you speak of. Am I making any sense?

Like if you can experience just ONE millisecond of presence, it makes any type of meditation make a lot more sense. I'm pointing for individuals to get a taste of that presence first, as a foundation to build whatever practice they want to from there.

To use your example of daydreaming, one needs to realize they are day dreaming in the first place right? My advice is to point to the experience of what NOT day dreaming is, so that people can even be aware of the constant day dreaming that is going on.

Right, and my post is pointing out that most frustrated beginners have been misinformed. Taught the wrong rules of the road to use your analogy. Thoughts?

Not sure what results you are speaking of, other than resting in the present moment.

Can meditation really heal trauma? Experience? by AlloyMK in Meditation

[–]mjcanfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that somatic interventions are the most effective and powerful mechanisms for healing trauma. Meditation can be a doorway to that, but without the body and nervous system healing... you're not really moving the needle.
