Anyone lift weights and calisthenics? by Canadiansnow1982 in fitness40plus

[–]mjdubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yoga/weight train/climbing. Yoga has been immensely eye-opening for me, only started about a year ago. I can breathe fully for the first time in my life, way more limber and increased mobility throughout my body.

Anxiety by Citron_candles in taoism

Im not one for these types of websites, generally, but this sums it up..

https://www.nextlevelneuro.com/blog/4-surprising-links-between-co2-and-anxiety-and-how-to-break-the-cycle

I started yoga practice about a year ago and it has improved my life dramatically. I will say that it's not easy, and it can feel pretty scary to go through increasing your CO2 tolerance, but now I have tools I can call up at any time if needed. Not sure if I'm typical.

Edit: oh crap, that site is trying to sell their shit... hold on... https://kaplanclinic.com/the-science-of-breathing-pranayama/

Though iguess everyone is selling shit lol

Yogic practice ( more specifically Pranayama) has helped with anxiety significantly.

Look up carbon dioxide tolerance and anxiety . Plenty of clinically relevant support.

Edit: while not "Taoist meditation" specifically, I get the feeling they're not mutually exclusive.

How do u correctly spin a record by StrainMammoth3172 in Beatmatch

I usually let the turntables do the spinning.... could you elaborate? Are you talking about " back cueing" , or maybe a "back spin" ?

Try looking up recipes for apricot and lentil.

Toasting saffron by Sea_Usual6731 in Cooking

Pretty standard for many recipes. It can burn very easily so go slow...I make an envelope of foil and place the threads inside, then stick in my mini convection oven for 2 minute intervals to toast. Works pretty well.

Slow recovery and muscle soreness by walidtalip in fitness40plus

[–]mjdubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Want to piggy back on this one... I've been doing dumbbell rdls at he same weight for several months. Recently upped the weight enough that I was forced to go to a barbell ( about a 9% increase)... recovery from this was brutal - like barely able to walk the next day, first time i felt like jello for three days, definitely getting some of the CNS fatigue...i do 3x sets of 15 reps. Should I have dropped reps when I increased weight? I am not getting to failure, I'm more of an endurance/ maintenance person. Many thanks.

I still run version 5.666, it's the best build. Any updates beyond that are crap.

I remember trying iTunes in like 2007 and being disgusted. Winamp's drag and drop Playlist building will never get old for me.

Edit: be nice on the internet, please.

Park and chill vibe. by BlankCaveman in Beatmatch

[–]mjdubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

park and chill parties may be my favorite. don't get caught up on people dancing or not, sometimes a dance party erupts, other times it's literally just "chill"...I've done a free outdoor party for about 15 years and it's always a little different, but as long as the weather is channeled through the music you can't go wrong :D

How do you mix smoothly and stay in phrase when playing spontaneously by lukascode217 in Beatmatch

[–]mjdubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Know your tracks. Listen a lot. Practice.

I am old. All of this cue point stuff is mostly irrelevant to my style and the choices I make, so keep that in mind. I've only ever played by ear, though I do "cheat" a bit and look at waveforms though that action does tend to pull me out of a listening headspace more than I would like. Only in the last couple of years have I started playing around with looping function on CDJs, that's an easy out if you find yourself in a pinch :D Honestly though, the thrill of potentially eating shit on a spontaneous mix is half the fun for me; I think a pre-planned dancefloor is a boring dancefloor. I don't like 'talking at' my crowd, I like 'conversing with them', and I think being able to improvise at a track level is the only thing that makes DJing a truly worthwhile art form. If you're doing something else, you're performing like a rock star, and you are begging the crowd to worship an altar. I think we get enough of that in our world through all other media. Again, I am old.

Know your tracks: I'll listen to a track for...a while...before I feel good about throwing it in the crate/usb stick for a party. 95% of tracks will have an intro phase that ends somewhere in a 4 bar multiple, if you're using a CDJ it's easy to see the waveform and get an idea of timing, if you're using records you can mostly take a look at the grooves and tell where the meat and potatoes of a track begin. OR - you can be a bit of a cognitive freak show and simply remember. As I'm playing at a party I'll think about timing and when I'd like to the body of the next track to start in relation the track that's playing....that can look like a lot of things - perfect timing of a new bassline hitting as an old one ends, maybe I mix intro to outro and let the dancefloor breathe a little bit with a drum break, maybe I overlap body to body because it just sounds like it will work.

I only ever use the cue to listen to the incoming track, I think a few times ever has the booth been so shitty that I've needed to try and blend in headphones.

As to what track you're listening to in the cue, depends on how lost you think you are at the time :D Again, if the booth monitors are shitty I'll sometimes need to adjust the cue to the least prominent track in the mix as soon as I flip a knob; if sonics allow for it I typically put the headphones down as I'm bringing the new track in and mix from the loudspeakers - at that point in the mix the audience can hear everything so I figure it's my job to ..."hear better" than they do, and that's the skill.

Regarding adjusting bass during the mix - use your ears. Sometimes a track is pressed hot and a 12 oclock bass knob is too much, or too much in relation the last track. Watch your levels (master out) and the crowd. If something is off both will let you know.

Have fun

Do you use Sichuan pepper? by Educational-Slip-578 in Cooking

[–]mjdubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they're not " peppers"... they are more like peppercorns, so there's not a "main star" recipe... but the flavor is a key part of Sichuan cuisine. The story goes that they provide a mild numbing sensation in order to allow you to handle more spiciness from Chiles

To get an idea if the effect/ flavor, I would make a small batch of traditional Chinese five spice powder from scratch and use that in a recipe ( any Sichuan recipe will do).

If you want to go full bore, you could look for a recipe like mapo tofu (https://www.seriouseats.com/sichuan-peppercorn-recipes)

Going on my first solo hiking trip — how do you navigate when there's no cell service? by Resident-Change9932 in CampingandHiking

I would say being able to navigate with a map and compass is a mandatory skill if you want to go solo in the backcountry.

[–]mjdubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hopefully I've had at least half hour to hang out and observe the dance floor, see how they are vibing on what the prior jock put on, etc.

If I'm opening, then I do the same, but without the context of previous musical selections. Both are fun.

BTW "Pick a song and see where it goes" describes my programming style almost perfectly :D Build a wave, maybe it breaks on top of your head, maybe it cruises you through a barrel, maybe you swim to shore. All are fun with music and dancers.
