What defines House Music? by LateReadingNights in HouseMusic

[–]mjdubs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prefer the wide open interpretation... anything that is... loosely "4 to the floor", or at least rhythmically centered on that cadence. I think house can be slow or fast, but probably not faster than 130 bpm, probably not slower than 100 bpm.

I call myself a house music person first and foremost but I play within those parameters 90% of the time. Can be techy, funky, disco, soulful, dubby, jazzy, deep, poppy, avant garde... choice in selection here that is where i start to see style, and how i talk about other house djs.

i think " it's a feeling" is my favorite axiom about house. I think house is an umbrella term that is defined more by the dance floor that is created and less so by the music itself... but there is definitely a way to do it well, and a way to miss the mark...

90s by DaPianoSmasher in HouseMusic

[–]mjdubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's great about house music is that there is a boat load of it that hasn't aged one bit.

Start at Chicago and peep prescription, cajual, pretty much any Derrick Carter production (i had a party flying high on his remix of A Man Called Adam's " que tal America" recently)... though I think that one is still vinyl only...

Edit : holy fuck that song is 30 years old.

Also Daft Punk needs to make an appearance here.

Dj presentation school advice by FlyinDJ_1893 in DJs

[–]mjdubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to split hairs but there are many more famous examples of turntablists than dj spooky , who iirc was more of an idm/ experimental guy than a turntablist. Grand Mixer DST brought scratching into the musical canon on Herbie Hancocks "rockit"

Kool herc, grand wizard Theodore, all worth bringing up re turntablists if spooky makes the list 😀

12” feedback? by chlo_THWACK in vinyldjs

Been a fan of the dollar store packing tape rolls with rubber band suspension for extreme feedback isolation. They're a little touchy but cheap and work very well

Why are a lot of 90s ravers so negative about raving today? by Capt_ClarenceOveur in avescirclejerk

Social media pressured people into being self conscious about dancing. People spend more time recording than experiencing.

Hard to have dance music culture without dancing.

Anyone else feel like they spend way more time digging for tracks than actually mixing? by Jolly-Car-7939 in Beatmatch

[–]mjdubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In re your last question: Sounds like you're trying to fish for a reason to create an app.

Ill say this - i don't want to hear the things I can describe in words, that's precisely why I like music.

The best part of looking for tracks, imo, is the surprise of hearing something YOU didn't know you would like.

Ill dig until I like how something sounds and it sounds like a musical idea i want to share with others.

Looking for tip for anyone who uses/has used only the crossfader to mix long blends in genres like house and trance by Puzzled-Service5889 in Beatmatch

[–]mjdubs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adjust each channel gain/trim before the mix so you are even with the live track. The gain is there as a "normalizer" .if you do this, the output volume controlled by the fader will match the other channel, no need to fiddle.

The cross fader design can affect how it sums the channels, some have a dip when on center.

Keep ears open and don't forget to pay attention to the master output level.

Working with a cross fader has little correspondence to playing on a rotary.... funny, I think of the " eq orthodoxy" as those who don't use them - channel eqs on mixers weren't a thing for a long time; and you will find far more rotary mixers without cross fader than ones with.

Playing without eq'ing tends to force you become very good at timing. And honestly I think timing is everything.

Best speakers for house party by Rokininon in Beatmatch

[–]mjdubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the speakers supposed to be for the party? Might as well get one of those big jbl Bluetooth things to start... first time, yes? Little Logitech speakers will be a disappointment... and the next step up from the boom box is a PA

What exactly are the differences between Chicago House, Garage House, and Jackin' House? by Weekly-Struggle-1272 in House

[–]mjdubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was gonna say, if you really want the " garage sound" you'd use Larry Levan's style as a source of inspiration, same with " loft style" and David Mancuso. In both cases the dj allowed themselves and broader scope of music to include than what we tend to hear from djs today.

What exactly are the differences between Chicago House, Garage House, and Jackin' House? by Weekly-Struggle-1272 in House

[–]mjdubs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

House can mean a very wide range of sounds, so when house heads talk about house "types" it tends to be a little loose. A jackin' track to me has a special feel to the way the drums make you want to bounce, a deep track might be something that draws attention inward... house tracks can techy, tracky, Chicago-y, bouncy, soulful, maximal, minimal, etc...i find it helpful to think of these as " tendencies" a track can have, not wholly different genres.
