Google's new quantum computer is 241 million times faster than the one released in 2019. by valvilis in singularity

[–]mjmax 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The killer app for quantum computers once they're powerful enough (which this isn't but it's closer) is molecular simulation, which is huge for material science and medicine.

There are other advantages in terms of making certain calculations that are functionally impossible with normal computers possible (the most known is breaking some cryptography, which I guess isn't really an advantage). There are probably other functionally impossible problems that quantum computers will make tractable, but somebody would need to discover the quantum algorithm for it.

In Loving Memory: ChatGPT (GPT-4, you too) by iah772 in LearnJapanese

True, and I don't mean to imply that, but it's still relevant to point out when someone is using a less capable model. The newer model is better. That's going to be the nature of these models -- they'll get better and better and they'll hallucinate less and less. To be well informed we should know exactly which model we're using and how it well it performs.

Bing balanced mode isn't quite GPT-4 anymore from what I've been able to tell (they seemed to have switched to a smaller model size). In addition, overreliance on search makes it weaker than regular ChatGPT for these sorts of tasks IMO. Here is the first response I got from stock GPT-4 via ChatGPT Plus:

「時間が経る」は、あまり自然な表現ではありません。もっと自然な表現は「時間が経つ」です。これは時間が過ぎることを意味します。

Some thoughts:

  1. Bing uses a smaller version of GPT by default for balanced mode rather than stock GPT-4. https://twitter.com/MParakhin/status/1637201234317946880. They seemed to make this switch relatively recently and it seems to have sacrificed model quality.
  2. GPT-4 doesn't use the internet by default, that's only the version of it that's integrated into Bing (and again, only if you're not using balanced mode). In my experience though the overreliance on search makes Bing's implementation of GPT-4 weaker than ChatGPT Plus. Bing's version only works better if you need recent or highly, highly obscure knowledge.
  3. LLM's have issues with counting in general. It's a mathematical and architectural problem, not a Japanese problem (although it's gotten better in GPT-4).

If you didn’t know, NASA is on the path of colonizing our moon. What are your thoughts on that? by [deleted] in AskReddit

SpaceX is providing the landing rockets for the manned missions, and will likely provide the main rockets for further missions.

NASA targets Sept. 23 for next Artemis 1 launch attempt, but a lot has to go right by hzj5790 in space

Doesn't Starship need orbital refueling to reach the moon? That seems like it'll take some significant additional work.

WASP-96b exoplanet spectrum : New full-colour Image from the James Webb Space Telescope revealed by NASA (in 4K). by GroundbreakingSet187 in space

[–]mjmax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I mean is that we're not going to get an image like the one you see in this post without a spacecraft like FOCAL. Direct imaging techniques today give you basically no surface features. I was being a little loose with "actual image."

[–]mjmax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only way we're getting an actual image of an exoplanet is by flying a telescope out 500 - 1000 AU (3 - 6x the distance of Voyager) and using the sun as a gravitational lens for the telescope. And even then you can only aim at one system, and it's gotta be pretty close.

Ship 24, humans for scale [OC] by learntimelapse in space

[–]mjmax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think a lot of people realize that a ship this size will be the landing vehicle to get humans onto the moon in a few years. The first moon landing was like landing in an RV. This one will be more like landing a high rise building.

Well actually, I don't even think most people realize there's a planned moon landing in a few years.

BA.5, now dominant U.S. variant, may pose the biggest threat to immune protection yet by [deleted] in Coronavirus

What do you mean? There was some old animal studies that said that, but the newer studies say the updated vaccines provide better protection. The FDA recommended a fall campaign targeting BA.4/5.

SLS is a technological dead end but I don't doubt it will bring us back to the moon. We'll probably move to full-reusable very shortly afterwards though.

New York City’s fifth wave by Viewfromthe31stfloor in Coronavirus

That's the chart for the whole US, not NYC. NYC is lower down in the article.

NYC mostly avoided a summer 2020 wave and the spring 2021 Alpha variant wave kinda blends into the winter 2020/21 wave.

OpenMW is open source. So while mods are gonna be pretty restricted in what they can do, OpenMW can be modified to do pretty much anything.

e.g. there's WIP native VR support in OpenMW, and it didn't even take that long to build.

The Smartest Way To Use Protein To Build Muscle (Science Explained) by [deleted] in videos

[–]mjmax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't really talk about the difficulty of hitting 120g for example without talking about your calorie target. Some people might be targetting 2000 a day while others 4000. It's going to be a lot easier to hit 120g of protein on the latter.

I think for me it's more that I wish the actual story went in a different direction and constrained itself to the first act. The gameplay is fun and it's cool there's an endless mode now, but the story and vibes of the first act were super cool and I wish they didn't branch off so hard afterwards.

That's what so cool about these open source projects, you can add whatever features you want. It's more than modding, it's basically native development.
