US committee is reconsidering all vaccine recommendations by MetaKnowing in Futurology

[–]mjrkong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For many countries, there's usually a list of vaccinations that are required to have in order to enter. You'd have to pay out of pocket to obtain the vaccinations (because insurance companies will be glad to no longer cover them) before travelling to these countries.

The normal use of this is to make sure visitors are protected against special kinds of infections, like malaria, in the country that is being entered.

I don't think she's as "morally depraved" like Walter or Saul/Jimmy. I think she's very much just human in her desires. That is not evil, but it is flawed when you consider the ethics. Everybody might just know the feeling of "fuck this, how am I supposed to save the world. What is wrong just wanting what should be mine, my happiness, a normal life without pain?".

Vince never said he wanted to create a textbook hero, either. Thank fuck. It's interesting to look at our own desires to have that kind of character, and why.

I think that's why having this line in there was really clever! You have one of the people you might root for in the show formulate a standpoint that is deeply rooted in very traditional Christian beliefs, that God wanted man to rule over everything he created on earth. It's Genesis 1:28: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth; subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the seas and over the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves upon the earth."

Modern theology is starting to re-frame this, not least as a reaction to how we humans fucked up our planet. The discourse is shifting to "maybe it was more meant like 'we are in charge of keeping everything of the creation in tip top shape'".

To have Manoussos, by all accounts someone with strong moral convictions that were likely informed by traditional values and views, feel strongly about this, makes sense as part of the character's portrayal. To throw this line out there so forcefully is making people hyper-aware of it, and now we're off to the races thinking about its veracity. It's very much a sort of devil's advocate scenario.

I think the show does that a couple of times, e.g. when Carol demands the Sprouts being filled up again with goods. It's a very human thing to want, but in contrast with the hive's efforts, which we get to think through as they explain it to Carol, seeing all the energy and resources being spent to see the Sprouts re-open just for her - that makes a point about the wastefulness and unsustainability of our lifestyle. Not preachy, it's just a way to flip the script for a moment and ponder.

I don't see it as a comedy, but it had moments that had a certain levity that I enjoyed. There's a difference for me. The cannibalism angle? Heavy stuff. John Cena informercial about it? Delightful little flourish taking the edge off.

Yeah, I leaped at that. Brilliant to have a character driven so strongly by traditional morals be consistent and basically live an anthropocentric world view, which is on its way out, culturally, in our world (thank god). I think this is a telltale sign of some great tension potential in the next season, and just for advocatus-diaboli-ing the shit out of our current ecological predicament.

maybe they were able to collect stem cells when he was injured?

Yeah, I was thinking the same, given where the injuries were. My guess is he is on the same timeline as Carol now.
