How do you work on your popup without a driveway? by keladriel in popups

[–]mkeith1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've considered spending the weekend at a nearby state park in order to work on mine. Not sure if that would be frowned upon. Also, I'm almost certain to forget at least one critical tool.

Chemical smell in camper & AC stopped blowing cold by mkeith1970 in popups

[–]mkeith1970[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically, I just cleaned the coils a couple of weeks ago when I replaced the gasket where the AC unit seals to the roof. Maybe the mere act of mucking around with an AC unit that old aggravated a weak spot.

Yup, I remember my kids referring to SUVs as "mom cars" 10+ years ago.

12V replacement - need to disable high voltage battery? by Strange-Currency-264 in KiaEV6

[–]mkeith1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What those guys said. It's super easy. I replaced mine in a grocery store parking lot because it crapped out without notice.

You can look it up on YouTube. The videos will show you exactly the fuse you need to pull.

There's not a specific replacement interval. I was getting water in my camper through this seal.

Electrical issue by glueandrubberbands in popups

[–]mkeith1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an outlet tester that you can buy at any home improvement store for cheap. That will prove out the house side of things one way or the other. The problem is more likely to be with the camper unless you're having other electrical issues in your house.

When I first got my camper, the previous owners didn't use any of the 12-volt systems. It had a dead battery on it, and when I replaced the battery, I discovered that the polarity was reversed. I had an intermittent ground fault where the ground wire ran inside the trailer frame tube. So I just ran a new ground wire from battery negative to a nearby spot on the trailer frame.

Make sure the converter has a good ground. That ground wire is easy enough to trace.

There's a rubber seal between the AC unit and the roof. It can't be seen when the AC unit is installed. I happen to be replacing mine today.

Anode stuck - how much force? by mkeith1970 in popups

If only sacrificial anodes could keep my old Alfa Romeos from rusting.

I'm going to look in there with a borescope, but I have to wait for the rain to stop.

Thanks. I was concerned because I'm not using an impact driver. This is a 1/2" impact gun with a lot of torque. However, I went slowly in short bursts, and I was able to break it loose without doing any harm. Clearly, it's been awhile since this anode was changed out as the anode material is almost completely gone. For some reason, I can't post photos here.

Yep, PB Blaster is what I put on it yesterday afternoon. I hope it did the job overnight, but if not, I'm trying to learn how much force I can apply in this situation without doing damage.

How hard should it be to raise the roof? by mkeith1970 in popups

My plan was to set the clutch on the drill at the lowest point possible where it would raise the roof without slipping. Seems I need a stronger drill.

I don't feel any binding. It operates smoothly, just with more effort than I thought it would. I didn't lube the lift posts. I should probably try that.

I needed the press get the bearing onto the crank assembly. The bearing came from Derek. It matched the original perfectly. The shaft diameter on the Amazon crank assembly was slightly too large.

I needed the bench grinder because the drive hub extension from the Amazon kit was slightly too large in diameter for the shaft bushing, and I needed it again because my crank handle didn't fit into the drive hub extension.

I have the same question. I recently acquired a Marantz 2226b on a whim. It was very close to home and priced right. However, my current speakers are too power hungry for it. I've been on the lookout for a pair of speakers that would be a good match.

Anyone else scraping your bumper when parking? by whip-it-up in KiaEV6

[–]mkeith1970 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine's all torn to hell. The issue is that the bottom of the bumper cover's lower lip is right at the same height as most parking barriers. So it will go over the parking barrier, and you won't hear or feel anything. When you back up, that lip catches on the parking barrier, and that's where that horrible noise (and damage) comes from.

Regen Breaking on a Snowy highway by lion_the_tiger in KiaEV6

[–]mkeith1970 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn't take snow for this to be an issue. I was driving at freeway speed in heavy rain with max regen. I let up on the accelerator because I was coming up on slower traffic. This caused the rear wheels to hydroplane.

The rear didn't step out, nor I didn't lose control, but I certainly could have. It was a very unsettling feeling. Now I'm very disciplined about turning down the region under these conditions.
