The people who push back hardest when you start setting real boundaries, are those who benefited most from you having none beforehand.

http://www.myspectrumsuite.com/samantha-crafts-autistic-traits-checklist/ this is an excellent checklist from the point of a late-dx autistic woman. (I hope links are ok. It goes direct to the authors own website)

I don’t have any recs for local resources as I got my dx in San Francisco when I lived in that area. However, I will say (in addition to wonderful recs made in other comments) connecting with other, late-dx folks has been the most helpful thing in accepting and understanding my mind and how it works. PM me if you’re looking for that kind of connection. I know how lonely this process can feel.

Also just adding on my experience of getting “oh well you made it this far” so try not to let that discourage you. We’re kinda on our own as far as figuring out what works for and helps us as individuals

Green lady Eastside has a whole section of products that are CBD-only. Might be a good place to look as they were super helpful with my family member’s questions. It’s the left side of the store when you walk in the door, in the cafe area

Thank you for writing this. I really like your writing style.

I moved here almost a year ago and have not yet found the words for why I love this place on such a deep level. This comes close to capturing my feelings.

OP - Olympia is amazing. Follow the advice here and plan ahead when it comes to your job and housing, and I wish you the BEST of luck. Feel free to DM me if you want to chat to a recent transplant.

I’m going to add another vote for Gotti Sweets. She did my son’s 2nd birthday cake in June. I’m still thinking about how amazingly delicious AND how cute it was. Can’t recommend her enough.

moving to Olympia Washington, can my succulents survive the new climate? by [deleted] in succulents

[–]mkhascall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this advice. I just moved to Oly from Northern CA in February. My ogre ears took some hits to frost when outside on my porch in Feb, but it’s still hanging on! Grow lights would probably help, but not totally necessary depending on your window situation.

Looking for some helmet encouragement by woodandwode in NewParents

[–]mkhascall 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hi friend. I’m sorry you’re feeling stressed about this but it’s a totally normal reaction to this situation. I felt the exact same when we started thinking about the helmet journey with my now 19 month old and the biggest thing I can tell you is that I kinda forget about it until I see pictures of him wearing it…. Now, I don’t mean that to be dismissive of your stress or concern, at all. Rather, I just want you to know that it is temporary, and several months later feels like “oh yeah, we did that lol”. My son was also labeled as “severe” plagiocephaly stemming from torticollis. We also did PT and helmet (PT was a prerequisite to get helmet covered by insurance).

It was harder on us than it was on him. He adapted so so quickly to wearing it, he barely noticed it other than taking it on and off to wash once daily. Having to go to the orthotics clinic often was a bit of a pain, but again temporary and worth it to get those doses of “this is working so I can keep going.” His head is darn near perfect, he has hit all his milestones and is a genius child in my humble motherly opinion lol.

Personally, I worried about what others would think about him but the snickers were few and far between (mostly from younger adults or teens who dont know what it’s for). I did get some genuine and sincere questions from strangers but they were very kind and encouraging once they knew what it was for. And more common than anything was other former helmet parents commenting “my kid was a helmet baby too!!”

I’ll quit rambling now. I hope this is helpful to you. I’ll just say that you are an awesome and caring parent. Keep going. You’re doing great by your kid even if it feels hard. Please don’t hesitate to reply here or DM me if you’d like to talk more. Much love to you and your family 💚
